  • These commercials aired on ABC on March 8th, 1981
    1. "The ABC Sunday Night Movie" Commercial Bumper
    2. Chrysler
    3. Milk
    4. Promo for "The Greatest American Hero"
    5. Promo for "Doctor Zhivago"
    6. "The ABC Sunday Night Movie" Commercial Bumper
    7. Halls
    8. Chewels (The actress at 2:33 is Elizabeth Shue)
    9. 1981 Toyota Corolla Tercel (It was known as the Corolla Tercel in the U.S. for a brief period based on the success and name recognition of that model. By 1982 it was branded as the Tercel worldwide)
    10. Fresca
    11. "The ABC Sunday Night Movie" Commercial Bumper
    12. Promo for "Dynasty"
    13. TV Spot for "The Funhouse" (This was Tobe Hooper's first big studio film after directing the independent horror classic "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" in 1974. This didn't perform well at the box-office but was largely well reviewed at the time which led to him being chosen to direct "Poltergeist" by Steven Spielberg later that year)
    14. Kentucky Fried Chicken Breast Filet Sandwich
    15. KGTV 10 News Bumper
    16. "The ABC Sunday Night Movie" Commercial Bumper
    17. Carefree Panty Shields (Just your normal, everyday topic of conversation to have at a party)
    18. Ford (With Robert Stack. I kept waiting for him to say "and we might even solve a mystery")
    19. Purina Blends Dog Food
    20. Epris Perfume by Max Factor (With Jaclyn Smith. "A little unsettling, a little disturbing" is NOT how to go about advertising a product...unless it's a horror movie or something!)
    21. Lincoln Mercury Lynx Wagon
    22. Cover Girl Clean Makeup
    23. Fresh Start Laundry Detergent
    24. Playtex Tampons (With Brenda Vaccaro. Whenever she comes up in a commercial I always think of a specific MST3K host segment from "Gamera Vs. Gaos" that compared her raspy voice to Lucille Ball and Harvey Fierstein: • MST3K S03E08 Gamer... )
    25. "The ABC Sunday Night Movie" Commercial Bumper
    26. Promo for "Soap" (Weird promo)
    27. KGTV 10 News Update
    28. Wienerschnitzel Patty Melt
    29. San Diego Sports Arena (I assume whatever this was promoting got cut off by the previous commercial. Damn you Wienerschnitzel!!!)
    30. Promo for "The World Of People"
    31. "The ABC Sunday Night Movie" Commercial Bumper
    32. Extra Strength Excedrin (With Dee Wallace, a year before she played the mom in "E.T.")
    33. Clairol Loving Care Color Lotion
    34. Pontiac (Wow, they really went all out on this commercial. The budget must have been enormous!)
    35. Purina Cat Chow (I like the kitty playing with the metronome at 12:49)
    36. Ford Mustang (IMO these 70's/80's Mustangs were so ugly compared to the original 60's models. The movie theater seen here is the historic Westwood Village theater in Los Angeles. Based on the marquee at 13:34 showing "Altered States", this commercial was shot right around Christmas of 1980 or early 1981. Here is a photo of the theater exterior during this time: i.imgur.com/kRQrLyH.jpeg)
    37. Stayfree Mini-Pads
    38. "The Deep" End Credits (This movie isn't perfect...certainly not a successor to "Jaws", but it's a pretty fun adventure film and a great movie to watch during the summer. And Jacqueline Bisset doesn't look half bad in it either! The score by John Barry might be the best thing about the movie and the disco infused end credits music can be heard in better quality here: • John Barry - Theme Fro... )

Milk- Out of all the places to drink Milk, I never thought that an old rowboat would be one of them.
Halls- Even though nowadays Halls Cough Drops come mostly in resealable bags, I’ve occasionally seen them come in the roll packaging like the one shown in this commercial at convenience stores at gas stations.

Thank you for posting all these compilations, there’s something so interesting about older advertising to me

11:08 - Considering Dee Wallace Stone has played a mom in everything from E.T. to Cujo to Critters, she knows a thing or two about pressure headaches.

She is the quintessential 80's mom. She had that part on lock back then.

I remember catching The Funhouse on TV in my teens and enjoying it. The film got a novelization written by Dean Koontz under a pen name. It’s a shame that Tobe Hooper never quite had the career he should have.

The Wienerschnitzel Patty Melt, now appearing at the San Diego Sports Arena! Perfect!
That Pontiac ad was perfect for the early 80s! Computer graphics and computer sounds! That's what everyone wanted to see back then! Plus how cheap it was!

7:34 Fun fact: The Mercury Lynx was a rebadged first generation Ford Escort. One of its most advertised and least-selling options was a 50 horsepower diesel engine that claimed to get 68 miles per gallon with a range of 884 miles.

More San Diego ads! I love it. We visited my dad there over Easter break a month later when he was stationed at the Point Loma Naval Base. Got to visit Sea World and the zoo, hung out in Balboa Park & even got to shop at Fashion Island. We stayed at this place called the Circle 7/11 Motel, right on Hotel Circle off I-8. It prob isn’t even there anymore. Fun times!

My mom had an '81 Toyota Tercel but it was grey. It lasted a very long time. Very reliable.

12:08 There was also another version of this commercial with a computer-generated voice.
7:31 "Chung Kuo" from "China" by the late Vangelis, the same guy who also wrote music for "Chariots of Fire" and "Blade Runner."

That milk commercial…So, the guy at the beginning is pretending to row the boat, even though the ending shot reveals they’re on land. Then they both seem thrilled about drinking milk. Clearly this couple recently escaped from a mental hospital.

All I could think about was Ron Burgundy. Everyone’s out there, at least appearing to do physical activities… and then chugging milk.

It's not that they're drinking milk that seems odd, nor is it the fake rowing for me. It's the fact that they're drinking milk out of glass mugs, outdoors, far away from home.

Lol that Pontiac commercial. Even the local type of commercials were way better than that. I actually like the Fox body Mustangs too aside from the 60's.

09:42 the weird Soap promo was likely referencing the constant outage from religious groups and boycotting of the show by affiliates in conservative states. It was a sitcom that was a parody of soap opera tropes and would bring up many sexual and political topics that other shows wouldn't dare mention at the time.

March 8 was my aunt's birthday. March 9 was mine and my dad's. I turned 2, but boy, do I wish I would have been old enough to eat one of those KFC chicken sandwiches! That looked tasty!

#29-the Pechanga Indian tribe bought the rights to the arena and named it Pechanga Arena to promote their casino resort up north on I-15 in Temecula.

7:15 - Just what every woman wants to hear, how unsettling and disturbing they smell…
