So true! But why is there such an emotional connection?! It’s more than nostalgia surely

I have played this game many times over on so many platforms for the last--what 28 years? I can practically play it in my mind.

I have no doubt they'll look at BS2. I'd say BS3-4 will be require a bit more work. - Zach

Totally agree with the era optimism/pessimism. I was born in 1995 and look back to late 90s early 00s as a much better time. My dad got me into BS/Monkey Island etc and very grateful for it. Excited for Reforged!

I was born in 1987, late 90's, very early 2000's were filled with optimism for the future. There was what's now known as "the Dreamcast aesthetic", where you always had a bright blue sky, in a futuristic setting, and the subtext was always that we'll do cool sh!t with that technology. There were touches of dystopia but many of them would be happening in places you'd want to spend time in.
There was also true diversity back then. You could turn on MTV and come across a music clip with Marah Carey and Ja Rule, it was surreal lol. Since then, we lost both styles of artists, I can't even make up an example to explain how surprising that kind of collaborations were. Leftists weren't racists, pro-war, and anti-freedom back then. Back then, they would have protested sending weapons to Ukraine for example. MLK Jr.'s teaching were very much still in place back then. Quotes like "those willing to sacrifice freedom for safety deserve neither" would make entire stadiums filled with people nod in agreement. In 2020, people were literally saying "fµck your freedom, I don't want to catch the flu"...
Add to that, that by that point, techno, French and US rap music had just peaked a few years priors, we all had cool sh!t to listen to, house music was peaking, and without fail, every year, there were at least 2 or 3 songs that were loved by absolutely everyone, regarding of age. Stuff like "It Wasn't Me" from Shaggy. Since the early 2000's, this phenomenon only happened ONCE with "Happy" from Pharrell Williams, to give you an idea of their cultural impact. You got "Happy", we got dozens of those.
Kids weren't left out either, any kid could meet ANY other random kid and start talking about Pokemon, literally, all the kids had the same thing in common at once. A bit like Fortnite nowadays, except that Pokemon fostered collaboration rather than competition.
Then 9/11 happened, then 2008 Crisis, then Bitcoin, then leftists lost their mind and literally everything turned to sh!t. Even young men can't even get a girlfriend anymore... How sad is that?! OnlyFans showed up one day and most people realise "hang on, given the opportunity, way more women than expected would turn to prostitution?!", that's utterly demoralizing. If women are prostitutes, leftists which are half of the West are racist POS, most people don't even understand basic things like Human Rights, what is there to fight for anymore?! Not much, that's killing people from the inside, whether they realise it or not. Invade the US in 2000, they'd kick your ass. Invade them now and they'd pretend that's a good thing...
(regarding Bitcoin, that thing broke a LOT of young men. They now believe that being early means they can replicate what happened to early bitcoin adopters. That's why they buy NFTs and stupid sh!t like that. Basically, ~20% of men's hope for the future is hoping that they'll catch the next speculative ride... It's the equivalent of 10% of the population not having hope except for winning the lottery... That's sad as fµck)
The optimism is gone, the only form of optimism you can find now comes from leftists, who believe that if they destroy the West, there is a chance that we would start communism 2.0, that they would get Universal Basic Income (ie. free money), and be able to show tweets to prove that they were good boot lickers and get a high rank in the new hierarchy... Everyone else is pessimistic.
Might sound weird to hear me b!tch so much about leftists, but they are THE biggest cause of everything we see happening in the past 15 years. 2020 would have NEVER happened without their full, enthusiastic support. If something huge were to happen again, the left would make sure that the worst outcome would come to pass. That's why we're all so pessimistic, deep down we know that we've been betrayed by half of the population. That's why apathy is rampant. Look at right wingers, they have been the punching bag of the left for 15 years, in 2023 they snapped, and they boycotted a brand of beer, making it lose 23% of its stock market value... That's the level of apathy we're dealing with now. There is nothing to fight for anymore, so people don't fight anymore.
I freaking miss the late 90's. It wasn't perfect but we all assumed cool sh!t were right around the corner... As you know, we were dead wrong.
Everyone is utterly demoralised, they now look at creatures from Elden Ring and find them "beautiful"... They just gave up. People even lost the concept of beauty in the past 15 years... Bright, colorful games are for kids, dark, slimy monsters are "beautiful"... That kind of thing is extremely damaging to people's psyche. If their art was under attack, they'd be willing to see it go. Who would fight for ugliness?!
I feel bad for people who didn't get to see the 90's, all they've ever known is the current dystopia.
I'd fight to get the world the way it used to be. What would a 17 years old fight for? Yes, they'd be motivated by making a better life for themselves, but they wouldn't fight for something greater than themselves. They don't even know that there is a world to save, they've never seen it :/

I can't say I'm not surprised that Broken Sword 6 won't be out this year, I just knew it wouldn't. I'm fine with that though but I really hope we see more of the game at Gamescom in August, next month.

Good interview. The thing I found most interesting was the mention of the interest in a Broken Sword series. I've always thought that post-Da Vinci Code there was no chance of a Broken Sword adaptation (much like Pirates of the Caribbean ruined any chance of a Monkey Island film) so I was surprised to hear it was something being talked about.

In broken sword 4 they had the German Johnny depp voice dubbing. I loved this game so much as a child. I want all reforged. I just can't wait to get it again. I bought it in PS, PC, mobile... This game just sits with me and the story telling was just wonderful.

Excellent interview! I loved hearing Charles go over the continuity issues and other things he's fixing for the first game, and criticising the moon logic of old adventure games that even modern games fall into the trap of. Cant wait to play Reforged and wish for great things for BS6 !

The partial to a bit of handheld in bed made me nearly splill my cuppa tea. I was laughing m head of at that. As for broken sword 4. I never finished that one and do find it the weakest in the series. I know charles would love to release this again one day and i can perfectly see why. However, Broken sword 3 i loved and its close to been my best in the series. I just love the opening with the plane. Loved it on ps2 and have so many fond memories.
