This is a perfect example of a performance that exemplifies the old saying, "There are no small parts, only small actors." Max Von Sydow. I salute you.
He had another part that was cut, you can see it online or on the dvd extras. I think he monologued a bit then got assasinated by the snake cult, but Conan didn't know because he was off on the mission so whether or not he got all those riches promised in the end is another question.
"There comes a time, thief, when the jewels cease to sparkle, when the gold loses its luster, when the throne room becomes a prison, and all that is left is a father's love for his child." As a father to a daughter, this cuts deep.
Sydow is in this film for roughly 3 minutes and manages to flesh out an entire character- what you can clearly see was once a great and likely tactful man, a ‘usurper,’ and has now faced so many troubles such as Thulsa Doom that he’s been reduced to old, drunken state. Absolute gem of a scene, in a film full of gems.
You do feel for him. Perhaps not a very good man, maybe sometimes cruel himself. But the one thing that he truly cherishes after years of rulership have made him jaded and worn, is his daughter. He knows sending these rogues to rescue her is a gamble, but he's that desperate.
He gave an interview saying he knew little about the Conan character, but his kids were big fans and it was a role that allowed him to flex his acting chops.
It is similar to Raul Julia's role in Street Fighter, no one will call that one a great movie (maybe a fun one if one grew up at that time) but Julia who was dying of cancer gave it his all because his sons were big fans of the video game so for him it was a chance to leave them something memorable.
Also he claims all he remembered of the role in later years was the deleted scene when his own court assassinated him (edited out), because they couldn't get the blood right or the right angle, and they had to do take after take of him getting knived by multiple characters on all sides
There are many things I really like about older films that you don't see anymore. For example, in this scene, when King Osric is speaking, they put the camera on him... and they just leave it there. There are a few cuts to Conan and crew's faces, but for the most part the camera just stays still on Osric's face. And I love it. I don't think today's directors are brave enough to keep it minimalistic like this anymore. If someone made this scene with the same dialogue today, they would probably cut the camera more often, they would have background music playing, they would have the camera very slowly zooming in towards (or out away from) Osric's face as he's speaking, or maybe they'd have the camera pan from one side to the other, etc. Like they are afraid that the actor's skills in monologue delivery aren't enough on their own to carry the scene. They are, in my opinion, but maybe today's average movie-goer is too high-maintenance with too short of an attention span, so directors are correct do add such extra little things. It's too bad, because scenes like this are powerful in their simplicity. The script is superb, the actor's skills are superb, and that's all you need. No extra camera tricks or editing tricks.
@@Rodshark75 I thought I was the only one who felt that way. I swear, sometimes I just want to start screaming and ripping my hair out when they pull that horsesh*t.
There are few, precious few actors nowadays that can carry a scene like this. They just don't train themselves, or have the skills anymore. All these older actors and actresses worked for years in theatre before becoming movie stars too.
"There comes a time, thief, when the jewels cease to sparkle, when gold loses it's luster, and the throne room becomes a prison". Every time I hear this part, I always think of the first scenes when Conan and Subotai didn't even have mounts, and ran from city to city, eating lousy street vendor food, and that's also around the time they met Valeria, forming true friendships and love that cannot be bought with all the money in the world. Maybe it's true when people say that "The journey matters more than the destination".
Of what few lines were in the movie over all. I have never seen another movie tell such an epic story with so little dialog. All the major scenes, Conan's mother's death, finding the sword in the tomb, the Wheel of Death, the Temple fight are all done with no words at all.
I also think the line is foreshadowing what Conan will be in his old age, as the opening narration suggests... "Jeweled Crown of Aquilonia upon a troubled brow".
"What daring! What outrageousness! What insolence! What arrogance!" I'm going to use this as my voicemail greeting whenever someone from work calls me on a weekend.
King Osric sees his youthful self in the exploits of these 3 'thieves'. He's one of the few moderately powerful kings remaining that's outlived his being able to stop Thulsa Doom at least physically, but he sees hope in a fellow Northerner. While Max steals this scene it's still comical seeing those three look away and down at the floor while he first scolds them like children. I never noticed the female 'attendant' by the throne that stares at the snake dagger with fear and loathing.

For as of a few weeks ago, I accounted myself a very rich man, and now, the poorest of all" Here's to the poorest of all.
xxx xxx Its a good line, but its the actor who makes it a great line. Once a great conqueror and warrior, now a king w/ all the riches he could ask for including a tray covered in precious stones yet he carelessly tosses it to the trio of thieves as if it was dirt to him and in 20 seconds we know why. The sadness in his eyes strips away all the wealth & power to reveal that he's an old man and father, worried sick about the one thing that truly matters to him, his child.

2:06 Max making his lip quiver as he delivers that line further proves he was on another level as an actor. A true professional that stole every scene he was in.
I have always loved the reaction from Valeria when the King spills the gemstones. She is a thief at heart, and as he throws at them riches beyond their wildest dreams, she cannot restrain herself, her first impulse is to fall to her knees and start grabbing the gems. Only after a moment she realizes what she is doing, she looks up at the King and listens to the rest of his story. It always seemed to me like a very genuine reaction, giving the character a lot of characterisation without a single line of dialogue.
Every red-blooded man's dream job: get paid a king's ransom (literally) to go out with your two best friends, steal a beautiful princess, AND carry out the revenge you've been plotting for 20 years. Oh, yes: and save the world. What more could anyone ask?

There's a charm in the narration typical of the great 80's sci fi and fantasy movies. It's the throwaway lines. Like Star Wars having Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing to give the cast some gravitas, "Conan" had acting heavyweights James Earl Jones, Mako, and Max Von Sydow to offset the rest of the cast being either unknowns or just non-actors. I love Arnold and this movie, but it was clear that the plan was to limit his dialogue to the absolute bare minimum.
Conan is a force of will, not strength. Conan does not speak a lot because he is ill accostomed to flowery speech; Conan does not speak a lot because he does not have to. Yes, in 1981 Arnold Schwarzenegger had a thick accent that would have been difficult for an American audience to understand had he had a lot of lines. However, Arnold was given the perfect role: the role of Conan, who personified "actions speak louder than words."
From the "Making of Conan..." documentary, there's the line where Dino de Laurentiis complains about no one being able to understand what Arnie says, to which the reply comes, "But Dino, no one understands you!"
And yet... even with almost no dialog, Arnie acts his ass off in this movie. Hell in some respects this is a far harder job to act without speaking. You have to use your eyes, face, expressions, body movements to all convey the character and script instead of relying on your voice to give it context and meaning.
Fare thee well, and may the longships take thee to the halls of Valhalla. You were truly a great man and a great actor... the world is poorer without your austier presence within it :(
You can feel his performance. Every line is delivered to perfection. The outrage at this...Thulsa Doom. The disgust that such evil so boldly struts about the land. The trembing lip as he speaks of his daughter under the spell of this wretched man. Tears well up in his eyes, but they do not fall, for he is KING OSRIC. A lesser man would be lying on the floor sobbing. Two minutes and fifty-one seconds to create a character who will stay with you for the rest of your life.
He did get 50 more seconds in a deleted scene where he gets murderd by the snake cult shortly after sending the rescue party for his daughter. Giving more weight to the scene where the princess asking Conan to join her (or at least take her with him) after burning the temple.
"There comes a time, thief, when the jewels cease to sparkle. When the gold loses its luster. When the throne room becomes a prison, and all that is left is a father's love for his child."
2:15 as a swede, I recognize that backround, thats viking carvings typical like the ones found in Gotland, and the king here, Max, was a Swede- def pushing that valkyrie part already.
Ever since I was a kid I always have to laugh at Valeria IMMEDIATELY falling to her knees and cuddling the hem of Osric's robes like saying "command me my King" as soon as he pours out the gems. ^^
Yes she's I'm sure she's also going for the gems but it also looks as if she's grasping Osric's robes. Maybe it's an attempt to hide her outburst of greed, but I just thought it was funny since it looked like as soon as he said anything about payment she was his to command ^^
Max Von Sydow had an indefinable quality as an actor that made whatever movie he was in watchable. He's left behind an incredible legacy for us to appreciate, but film is not going to be the same without him. RIP Max. And thanks.

R.I.P. Max Von Sydow. I have always enjoyed everything he did, but this was by far my favorite. I love the part just before this scene when he says "the lions ate him!" and the laughs. Great actor, great movie.
I understand this all too well. And also no matter how deep your love for them is, they still turn their backs on you. It's a pain that must be endured.
Such a powerful acting. He lives and accepts all the emotions in his story and lives as they are real. I do not see any other way to act in such passion and such deep emotions.
"There comes a time thief, When the jewels cease to sparkle, The gold loses its luster, And the throne room becomes a prison, And all that's left...is a father's love for his child!"
I've seen this movie countless times and first saw it in the late 1980s and I didn't even reach double digits age. I never gave the scene much attention but I love how Max Von Sydow gives it his all in this scene. It all seems so ridiculous, especially with Arnold and his sausage suit, but Von Sydow acts it like he's in an oscar nominated movie. Great actor, great movie.

I love Max von Sydow, he's a splendid actor in just about everything.
RIP King Osric, The Usurper. ⚔️ Crom shall not cast You out. ✊
The end hits you right in the feels.. RIP Max. You made a lot of my favorite movies better. You are a legend.
Master actor, a Legend!
my favorite scene from conan the barbarian rest in peace Max Von Sydow
"There comes a time, thief,
when the jewels cease to sparkle. When the gold loses its luster. When the throne room becomes a prison, and all that is left is a father's love for his child."
The King is dead. Long live the king.
Beautifully crafted scene, just pure amazement.
R.I.P. 🎥 a great actor 🎥
2:15 as a swede, I recognize that backround, thats viking carvings typical like the ones found in Gotland, and the king here, Max, was a Swede- def pushing that valkyrie part already.
This scene. If ever there was a message, this was it.
Ever since I was a kid I always have to laugh at Valeria IMMEDIATELY falling to her knees and cuddling the hem of Osric's robes like saying "command me my King" as soon as he pours out the gems. ^^
+Wurzelknecht I figured that for her going for the gems that fell off the plate.
Yes she's I'm sure she's also going for the gems but it also looks as if she's grasping Osric's robes. Maybe it's an attempt to hide her outburst of greed, but I just thought it was funny since it looked like as soon as he said anything about payment she was his to command ^^
Yeah she's going after the gems he's dropped. She's a practical lady. The king can't do anything for her but gems....that's another story.
Valeria is a material girl.
I think she's just spent enough nights cold alone and hungry to never want to do it again.
I can understand that.
Requiescat in pace, Max Von Sidow.
So much wisdom for life in just this one scene. What an amazing movie.
Max Von Sydow had an indefinable quality as an actor that made whatever movie he was in watchable.
He's left behind an incredible legacy for us to appreciate, but film is not going to be the same without him.
RIP Max. And thanks.
RIP to a great actor who played many roles in many great movies. Including this one of course.
R.I.P. iconic acting phenom
0:42 without watching it, the laugh makes me picture him as Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon! :D
“Pathetic earthlings hurling your bodies out into the void...without the slightest idea of who or what is out there”
RIP, Sir. Thank you for all of the awesome screen moments.
Brilliant actor,he will never be forgotten.
such a small part and yet one of the most powerful performances in the 2 movies
Classic Scene i salute you
Rest in peace Max Von Sydow 1929-2020
Conan The Barbarian is the legend of all time
I've only now learned that Max Van Sydow has passed 10 days ago...he was one of my favorites. God speed Max.
Rest in peace Max and thanks for bringing this scene to life!
Rest In Peace, oh great actor-king:
Max von Sydow, we bow before you and raise our swords to honor your passing.
Rest in power. Max
Max van Sydow brought it in every movie he was in. That's why I am so sorry to see him go.
He stole the show; A TRUE LEGEND! "And We Shall Not See His Like Again"
absolutely love that scene! Great acting.
Legendary performance!
RIP Max... :(
We will Miss you dreadfully Max......
I gotta use King Osric in one of my D&D sessions
I had forgotten he was in Conan. Thank you for reminding all of us who have watched and enjoyed his films over the years. He rests with the immortals now😪
RIP Max Von Sydow. Such a talent. He'll not soon be forgotten.
Rest in peace Max Von Sydow : you were a great actor and i am one of your numerous fan who will miss you.
Dune, Needful Things, Conan,...even Game of Thrones : a great actor with a long list of movies, tv movies, and many more things.
You will be remenbered as long someone see your work and recognize your talent.
Max von Sydow could command the scene whenever he was in it. Whether it was here, Dune, The Force Awakens, didn't matter, he was that good.
Oh yes....Liet Kynes, the Imperial Planetologist......
Truer words have never been spoken. Thanks for posting.
The best lines written ever. What a delivery.
RIP Max,what a fantastic actor. From eternal classics like The seventh seal to cult films like Conan he always gave his best.
R.I.P. Max Von Sydow. I have always enjoyed everything he did, but this was by far my favorite. I love the part just before this scene when he says "the lions ate him!" and the laughs. Great actor, great movie.
You will be missed Max!
Rest in peace, mr Sydow! You were one of the greatest!
best barbarian movie.....
Max Von Sydow brought with him such professionalism, such skill, and such presence that his small scene in this movie elevated it greatly.
Indeed, one of my favourite scenes in the movie. One of the greatest actors of his time. Gods Speed and Rest easy Max.
It's fun to see how Conan, Subotai and Valeria behave before the king, it almost looks like a grandfather scolding his grandchildren hahaha
I understand this all too well. And also no matter how deep your love for them is, they still turn their backs on you. It's a pain that must be endured.
Such a powerful acting.
He lives and accepts all the emotions in his story and lives as they are real.
I do not see any other way to act in such passion and such deep emotions.
"There comes a time thief,
When the jewels cease to sparkle,
The gold loses its luster,
And the throne room becomes a prison,
And all that's left...is a father's love for his child!"
That should be the tagline for Conan 3, but Arnie and Co. have been totally deaf so far...
If civilization must come down to its knees once again, I hope this film is among the surviving shreds of culture preserved for future men.
A movie like this can not be made today. Hollywood deems it too masculine.
Too manly for limp-wristed Hollyweird, that's for sure.
I saw this with my dad in the theater when I was 14. Even then this was my favorite scene in the whole movie.
I liked the orgy scene myself.
