  • Folks, thanks for caring if I got tornadoed this weekend! I am just fine and I am taking a short break from planting to get you a little news update on tornados and how tornado alley is likely to shift.
    I also feel like enough people have asked me, I'm gonna give you hopefully a 1 time H5N1 update. H5N1 is a real threat but we don't need to panic about it full time. I'm telling you two gates to watch for taking action, and I recommend you engage in a reasonable amount of general resilience preparation- not specific to this threat.
    Watch what I mean by reasonable prep here (older video, I still abide by these boundaries myself)

    For the nerdy, here's the CDC report

    And of course, the tornado paper, which is sweet. I talk about it more in the video link below, too- another older video.

    Hello Dr. Emily! I am glad to hear you are safe! First: You are the bee's knees, and I have watched every single one of your videos. Next: Could I please ask you a question when your tomatoes can spare you for a moment? When selecting an "ideal location" for a senior couple wanting to leave Texas that (a) has ample funds to choose any location (b) dislikes snow but knows that it is important in pest control and (c) dislikes humidity but knows that a source of water falling from the sky is necessary... would you choose (1) the Colorado front range (2) Fargo, ND, or the (3) any town on the west side of the Cascades but far enough from the ocean to avoid the subduction tsunami zone. Thank you kindly for your amazing work to help so many people make good choices and work hard to preserve our beautiful country.

      @AllergicToMakeBelieve I like to talk to folks and get a sense of the kind of culture and services they're looking for before I help them place. I offer destination-related services at $50 an hour. You've done a lot of your homework already, I think I could get you and your spouse my best advice in an hour, hour and a half of my time. I'd talk with you on zoom for a half hour, double check your potential destinations against your factors of interest, maybe throw a wild card in there you haven't considered. You can email me at ar@americanresiliency.org if that sounds good- no worries if it's not to your taste. Glad to have you on the channel.

      Also, good on you both for getting out of Texas while the getting's good. I'm working up the nerve to update the Texas outlook. Texas is getting hit hard on a number of fronts- it'll be very challenging for the state to respond effectively.

      That's a great rate! Given your depth of knowledge you could so easily charge more, but knowing how much you care about helping people I know you want to keep things attainable for people.

      @@AmericanResiliency Thank you for the thoughtful response. I understand the need to charge for your 1-1 consulting time...as bills must get paid! I will contact you in the future when a few of our critical parameters are more clear, so that we can make the most of your expertise. Best wishes and warm regards, Elizabeth

    Thanks, Dr. Emily! Glad you are okay. I live in North Central Texas (DFW area) and I fully appreciate our "tornado culture". Interestingly and anecdotally, I recall speaking with people who have lived in this area, or Texas and Oklahoma, for many years and when this subject arises, it is almost startling how many mention that while we still have tornados, the really nasty ones seem to be tracking east of us. Places in the Midwest and Southeast which used to get occasional tornados appear to be getting them more often. I suppose the science is starting to validate our perceptions.

    • @AmericanResiliency
      @AmericanResiliency  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely does not seem to be an "end of century" timeframe for the tornados moving east! Appreciate hearing this is the talk on the ground in your area as well- it is also common to hear in Iowa, especially if you ask older folks

    I grew up in tornado land and we did the drills in school. I spent some time in the dark basement with the added benefit of water dripping down the walls when there was a big storm.
    I was looking at buying retirement property in Tennessee until I found that the tornadoes seem to happen more at night and because of the hills, there is very little warning, but mostly I quit looking there because of the flooding. The more intense rain is just going to lead to more of it.
    I’ve heard the bird flu is about 95% fatal to elephant seals in Argentina and for penguins in Antarctica because it might be the first exposure both groups are having.

    • @AmericanResiliency
      @AmericanResiliency  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @kenmcclow8963 I agree there are a lot of concerning factors coming together for Tennessee- and too many of them are new threats, there's no culture of response.
      From how bird flu has been acting in so many species, it strikes me as an extremely unexpected grace that it's so mild in cattle. Be incredible if it actually chilled out.

      @@AmericanResiliency yes, we’ve had some good rain. More in the way. Trees are starting to leaf out, maybe 3 weeks ahead of normal.

    • @AmericanResiliency
      @AmericanResiliency  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @jaycoldwell, 3 weeks ahead would be intense any other year, but that would put you at a bit lower change than at my place- just like we'd predict. We're about 5 weeks ahead. But the pollinator emergence and the flower emergence came together really well, and fingers crossed nothing has been hurt badly by frost.

    I totally understand not wanting to discuss the nitty gritty of potential pandemics and remain focused on climate! On the other hand, pandemic prep seems like a critical component of "American Resiliency," and it doesn't surprise me that others in the audience would want to hear you speak on it. I'll definitely remember your rule for pig-pig and human-human transmission of novel diseases. I know it's real hard to keep a channel focused to please the algorithm. When I originally clicked your channel I expected to find 1950s-style PSAs on practical survival skills and community preparedness. Maybe those come later lol ;)

    • @AmericanResiliency
      @AmericanResiliency  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You know, it's not about the algorithm for me on this one, it's more than I don't want to do plague-watch, and I do want to do climate. I mean, there's plenty of appetite for a polycrisis focused channel, but that's not what I want to do.... there are some topics where I know a lot, but I'm no more qualified to talk about world affairs or economics or plastics than most people.
      Climate, I feel like I have enough background to help people understand things better, and I feel a passionate calling to do my best to rally around saving what we can save at this serious time for our planet.
      Long story short, I'll keep you updated when I feel like there's something real serious I'm qualified to talk about outside of climate, and with my background in infectious disease, there's a community need on this I can't ignore. Fingers big-time crossed this is my one and only H5N1 video. But I keep my ear to the ground on this issue. And if it gets closer, if it hits either gate I talked about or if it surprises us and starts coming in through dogs or something, I'll do what I can to get the word out, so we can amplify the signal.
