  • Showing the process of mounting a duck with step by step instructions. It is a long video but I wanted to be sure and include everything to inform the viewers and first timers.

You did everything else very nicely but I really recommend washing your duck skin several times before mounting just to remove all the oils that are left in the skin and feathers. (On any duck) Ducks are very fatty and oily, especially mallards. You did a good job of removing the fat but you never washed it. I like to wash using dawn dish soap and after several washes and rinses I blow dry it with cold air. It makes the ducks feathers nice and fluffy and the oil won’t seep through the skin as time goes by. And of course you can still add the borax after washing. I can already tell that from the way the back feathers kind of clump together that those feathers have a lot of oil in em. Another thing I can also recommend is to use Masters Blend to inject the feet of the duck with. That stuff helps keep the ducks feet from looking shriveled up after they dry. But other than that, you did a great job at explaining the process! Please don’t think I’m trying to be rude about this, I’m just trying to help. Have a nice day! :)

I agree that one could have been washed better, I did wash off camera but there was definitely some oil left in this one. I like to wash in borax, soap, a little pine-sol and salt now. It cleans then really good. I’m hesitant to use masters blend as I’m still getting the basics but it definitely brings the feet back to life, thank you for your input though it was very helpful!

Hey man! I’ve done two ducks myself this past winter and two of the most helpful things I figured out after doing my second was keeping the incision smaller! My incision on the first duck was from mid neck to tail feather but my second was much smaller and I felt it was much easier! Also I dried my second bird for closer to an hour compared to my first where I did about 10 minutes! Getting those feathers nice and dry before putting the skin on the body will help feathers much much better! I’m just a beginner myself so take everything with a grain of salt! But I’m always willing to help out or listen to any tips anybody else has!

That’s something I learned too, the importance of drying them super good before mounting. It makes them look much better! Cool to hear from someone else with the same hobby!

Wash with dawn dish soap ! And make sure when you dry it all the down ( below the feathers ) is nice and fluffy dry !
This would make such a difference on the final product ! Keep at it !

Do lots of research like watching videos and get a sharp knife with changeable blades. Borax is your best friend! Let me know if you want to know anything else!

How did you get that mount rod to stay put and not spin after inserting into the foam chest after mounting the duck?

    • @stonepostoutdoors4471

Rough up the wire and bend it slightly. Then hot glue or super glue into the hole

Brother tip of the day on your fish. Do not put the wire mesh on front fins. Leaves checker marks. Mesh on back. Plastic on front.. Byrd TAXIDERMY. From Alabama
