  • Update - Higher quality version here - • HQ - Hawaii Mars Attac...
Highlights from a 1998 hog fuel fire in Port Alberni. In 90's video cam quality.
Hawaii Mars made her final flight from Sproat Lake to Patricia Bay on 11 August 2024 to be put on display at the BC Aviation Museum in North Saanich. Along with Philippine Mars (also being prepped to fly out to a museum in Arizona) these huge planes were a big part of our lives in the Port Alberni area and will be hugely missed.

Yes I remember that plane at many places, that was the first line of defence was to call in the big guys. In a lot of cases it was a matter of just a few drops for that Mars and the war was over for sure. We are going to miss you Martin Mars you Hawaiian rain.

I left my house to head to departure bay to see her fly by, but she was early. All I saw was her tail through the trees. I was so disappointed, but this video makes up for it so much. I would sooner see the old girl doing the work she was built for than to witness her flight to her grave. Thank you for posting.

@@Leftcoasteh2 I was very luck to watch Hawaii on kootenay lake in 2015 ( i'm from the kootenays) fight the blazes here.
My semi hippie cousin was driving water truck for the crews at the time, he drove way up to a landing in shorts and flip flops to deliver water to the ground grews, there he was smoking a joint filling the pool with the truck water, crews running around on radios and somewhat panicked as you could see the main brunt of the fire a couple hundred yards ahead and the winds changed and it was coming towards them. Now he wasn't worried because he's pretty laid back but all of a sudden he could hear the roar of 10000 HP over head and he whips out his phone and catches Hawaii come from behind 100' up directly overhead and she just dumps in front of them and "poof" Fires out and ground crews where calmed right down. Told me they actually caught the first bit of the drop, light misting. Was damn cool to see.
Wish things were different, she has lots of life left in her and could still be used for initial attack to this day....
      Cheers
