Sports that are played on a field like football, tennis, golf, athletics etc can be equipped with tech covering that particular field, but how can you cover with tech the large surface of a big country like France? The best they can do now is tell us the power/watts of the riders or drone footage, but still the technology in cycling is limited compared to other sports.

You should do a video on how the NHL, NFL, Soccer broadcasts track the players and the tech that goes into making a broadcast entertaining in present day.
I'm one of the data journalists certified to do what the people with phones were doing following golfers around. We are trained to do so in several sports, such as Snooker, darts, football, cricket, basketball, etc. and the gig is quite exciting. Also I seriously want you to consider doing a video on the tech in cricket, it's everywhere
As always, you make terrific interesting videos. I enjoy both playing and watching golf and you answered all my curiosity questions. I occasionally go to golf simulator that uses the Trackman and it really helps me with my practice routines. I didn’t know that is what they use on the tour for the broadcast. Thanks for making this.
No joke, PGA has an INSANE ability to ship PERFECT software. Very rare for such a large organisation. The Vision Pro App is just another example of that. Props to them! They should have won an Apple Design Award.
One technology that I miss is the putting line. Aim Point Express grew out of this with players like Lydia Ko and Adam Scott using this method. Pretty cool math to be able to predict putting path.
Will you respond to the call out from the well respected youtuber Louis Rossman about how you softballed Apple and missed tons of info countering their talking points?
Great to highlight the amount of tech in golf, Marques. From the R&D that goes into golf products, to the tech that consumers can use (personal launch monitors, scoring GPS apps, laser rangefinders, etc) tons of tech in golf. Thanks!
Trajectory calculation and polygon correction with curves consideration are most brain expensive operations. Everything else is easy and mostly stands on the first two pillars. It's kinda cool seeing that they're not yet trying to automate the whole process and using some manual input. For test and improvement purposes it is important.
Hi Marques! You should also check out the tech behind Cricket. Tennis's ball tracking was possible because of the ball tracking invented for Cricket to check LBW. The VAR that you get to see in Football is inspired from "Third Umpire" in Cricket. There are also other tech like "Ultraedge", to check if the ball nicked the bat or not. Sure you'll be fascinated.
Bro! You gotta do something on Baseball tech! They track spin rates on balls, use wireless pitch com to communicate pitches, the strike zone is tracked. I mean LOADS of tech.
I have a family member who is a videographer/editor for a tv company. He’s covered every professional sport and said golf is by far the most difficult sport to cover. There is chaos in the main truck where video is being fed and edited. At any given moment something great or terrible is happening and that is what you have to show because golf in itself is pretty boring so that is why you see a player in 108th position on the 17th green because he just made a 53 foot putt. crazy cool video, tech's all around! never watched golf but feels good to know that those watching are able to see the sport in its full detail, thanks Marques! they need to find ways to make it interesting for the live crowd too
Really cool to see behind the scenes on the broadcasts. A few additional tidbits as I've talked with some of the volunteers over the years going to tournaments before all of this was up and running. The volunteers on each hole with the tablet / laser range finder have been a staple for a long time (pre-shot tracer / trackman as I understand). Before the tablets it was all done on paper with hole marked up in a labeled grid pattern for marking where the ball landed. This is how the PGA has shotlink data for decades now and how they were tracking it. Really cool to see how far it's come as technology has gotten better. Other interesting technology that tracks ball flight at some of the tournaments is Top Tracer (the same technology used at Top Golf facilities if you have one near you). Instead of a radar based tracker, it's purely camera based! It can't track all of the parameters that trackman can, but it gets all of the key ones (the ball flight, speed, launch and descent angles, etc...). There are also practice ranges out there that are Top Tracer ranges so you can go practice with the same tech (one happens to be down the road from me here in Dallas that I go to). One other tid bit is to think of the cost of this setup! A normal trackman unit that anybody can purchase and use as a launch monitor runs between $20,000 and $25,000!! They have... what..... at least 36 of these as there's 2 per hole (one off the tee and one on the green facing the fairway), and I'm guessing they have several spares in case one borks out. AND because they have to be able to cover tournaments anywhere in the US, there are multiple travelling rigs... meaning each rig has 36+ trackman's. The Korn Ferry tour also has nearly the same set of rigs to cover those tournaments as well (they're the AAA league of golf if you will). That's quite a massive investment JUST in launch monitors alone!
Nice swing! The tech to analyze your launch stats at a relatively affordable price is pretty amazing. Like Flightscope’s Mevo+ a little under $2K. Which is much cheaper compared to a full on Trackman. Also Gears Golf measures the movement of every part of the body so you know for example how many degrees your wrist is pronated at impact. There’s also strokes gained. Sort of Moneyball for golf which measures accurately where you are losing strokes to the field. Lots of number crunching. Golf is still incredibly hard though.
This is so cool and now I have a reason to get a Vision Pro. I watch the PGA Tour whenever I can, but based in Switzerland it can be challenging. I was lucky enough to work at the 2013 British Open where I worked on the localised live stream but it's impressive how things have moved on since then. Great video Marques, thank you.
The Vision Pro application is so cool! The issue Formula 1 faces is they are historically very limiting on the features they like to make available to fans. Hopefully they see the potential in the virality of the features and take inspiration from the PGA. Great video!
what an awesome behind the scenes glimpse of the tech that powers modern sport viewership. i remember an old joke that said that watching a golf tournament on tv was mostly watching televised sky as the cameras tried in vain to follow the ball through the blue to the green. amazing video and amazing tech.
