Simon! You'll probably need to get a yukata custom ordered with Jun because they don't typically make them with sleeves long enough for guys as tall as you two lol

I'm happy that someone actually states out loud (from experience in Japan at that) that it's NOT cultural appropriation for a foreigner to wear a yukata or kimono. There is quite literally an industry BUILT on letting foreigners wear clothing as such, and SJWs with their 'cultural appropriation' screeching don't seem to understand.

    • @Harmonia96
      @Harmonia96 8 ปีที่แล้ว +60

Yes, yes, yes! For me, I am on the middle ground between having the freedom to wear what I want vs this "cultural appropriation" being spouted on the internet. It's only a matter of knowing the appropriate time/occasion to wear certain clothes like a kimono or something as common as a 3-piece suit.

I am mexican and i think it is awesome to see foreigners in mexico wearing traditional mexican clothes because it just shows that even if you're not mexican you can see the beauty of other cultures and you want to experience it. People who find something like that offensive need to get a life. The only times i find it offensive is when stupid people use wear sombreros or ponchos as a costume on days like 5 de mayo and "celebrate" the day without even knowing what it is. The same goes with japan. A lot of japanese might be offended when they see a foreigner wearing a yukata as cosplay but i see no reason why they should. There are so many anime characters that wear yukata/kimono, so it makes sense that even japanese people wouls d make a cosplay out of it. As long as they are being respectful, i see no problem.

In our school (international school) in the Philippines we study foreign language which is (nihongo) にほんご and every school year during February (which is almost summer time) we celebrate 日本の日 also known as Japanese Day. What we do during the preparation we make Sakura trees made out of Sakura Japanese paper flowers and real tree trunks and we also make Fukinagashi which are very pretty btw...Then we eat そうめん、たこやき、やさい いため(soumen/cold noodles, takoyaki, vegetable dish、etc and it's so fun! We even perform Japanese dances in between breaks during the cosplay contest! I'm always excited for this festival! Hihihihi😁🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭

I don't understand what kind of political correctness creates such an option that foreigners shouldn't wear Japanese garments in Japan.
Vast majority of Japanese people in Japan like to see non-Japanese persons wear Japanese garments, from casual Yukara to formal Kimono, EVEN they may wearing them incorrectly.
If you come to Japan in summer, please don't hesitate to try Yukara.

It's true was you say in the vid and the blogpost. When I went to Japan I went to a second-hand kimino shop and bought a yukata to remember my travels. I thought about the cultural-appropriation piece (I'm a woman of colour and studied poli sci, etc.), but I was so touched at how receptive and educational the experience was. I think the whole discussion about cultural appropriation is more appropriate where a community is a minority group that is disenfranchised/marginalized. It's a totally different context in Japan. In Japan the conversation on how their traditions are shared and progress is mostly an internal one where the benefits are felt and disseminated to others to their own benefit .
The lady who was running the shop was so sweet and so excited that as a foreigner I was interested in Japanese culture. She helped me assemble the yukata, and even gave me a belt for free! I ended up also buying a quick-obi (the equivalent of a clip-on bow tie lol) and I love it! So I encourage anyone who is interested to go for it and enjoy! I look for forward S&M to learning through your TL;DRs as you learn first-hand about Japanese culture!

Your yukata is gorgeous!! Simon, I hope you can find one soon as well. I'm sure you'll look adorable together!
    A few tips:
    1) boobs are troublesome for yukata/kimono since they make your collar shift out of place. Wearing a sports bra will help with that.
    2) if you want your collar to look nice and stiff you should get/make an eri-shin! Basically a long piece of plastic you shove into the collar haha.
    3) first thing when you put on a yukata/kimono: make an ohashori! (You can google it ;D ) It'll help make the yukata look less baggy, and will also help the lower part hang straight.
    4) tying an obi is tiring af, I can imagine it's especially hard for you with your EDS. Unless you want to teach Simon how to do it, you should look into getting a pre-tied obi. Much faster and easier!
I hope you have fun with your yukata Martina

so i am a bit of a traditionalist in terms of cultural things, and I am SUPER displeased with these modern yukatas. BUT!!!!!! i love Martina's yukata, and I love it because it is so unmistakably modern - no one will be confused on whether that's a traditional yukata. The ones that are using traditional patterns but not traditional colors (like red or pink) I HATE because they breed confusion. Plus the overriding purpose of a yukata is that it look cool (as in temperature) - Japanese summers are super hot and humid, and the Japanese do a bunch of things to exude coolness, like put up glass bells that make tinkling sounds. Like things should look cooling and refreshing so that you can at least get cool vibes even if you are in fact super hot and uncomfortable. And Martina's yukata is primarily a blue striped yukata, so it doesn't look hot and suffocating like those horrible red or pink yukata.
tl;dr: Martina's yukata is Japanese cultural traditionalist approved!

Your 'kimono' picture isn't just a kimono, it's a furisode, specifically for official events, worn by unmarried women, signalled by the really long sleeves. ;-) Regular kimono have sleeves of the same length as the yukata. :D

I went to buy a new yukata a while ago and one of the new staff asked if she could practice draping kimono on me, they also offered me to buy at discount prices. Even an old little granny who also worked there complimented me on how good I look.
I just felt bad about my giant feet! One cm over the traditional 24,5 Japanese L shoe size.
So.. Non-Japanese people who keep insisting it's cultural appropriation to wear kimono, I'd say heck no. Japanese people in general always seem thrilled when foreigners like their culture, especially the more traditional stuff. Just do your research, ask questions, share the knowledge and love. :)

"He thinks you are so beautiful." That made me smile so much. ^___^ She's basically saying don't worry if you are wearing it wrong or what you look like because the person you love will think you look beautiful no matter what. This lady is so adorable.

In the japanese culture, it is very common to "recycle" ideas. If you look at visual arts, music and literature, you'll see that it's been centuries that ideas and stories are being used on and on!
As an example, you can see the "genji monogatari", novels written centuries ago, still being adapt today and it is so cultural to do this that it is rare to see actual Japanese people who read the whole Genji. They recycled the original story in so many ways and so many times that the importance is focused more on the cultural aspect that the thing itself.
So it's not really a surprise, with the big impact of current Japanese fashion, that traditional yukata shops are dying slowly.
Personally, I find it very cool! Not that I don't like traditional yukatas, but resent ones represents the new generations more and it keeps the tradition more alive ! :)

Simon, there are tons of places in Kyoto that have awesome funky men's yukata, as well as many other amazing Simon-style shops. I highly recommend a special shinkansen day trip to Kyoto. I have a magazine from about 10 years ago that had a great shopping guide, I'll have to find it and let you know which shops were recommended.

I really am glad you guys brought up cultural appropriation. I think this trend of shaming people for it is counterproductive. We as peoples from different places have always adopted things from each other. This is how our cultures grow and evovle for better our worse. If all those Japanese fashion designers were shamed and ridiculed for appropriating clothing design from Europe, then we would not have such greats as Issey Miyake. If the Russians and French did not adopt ballet from the Italians, and mastered it and innovate on it, would we have Swan Lake?

This reminds me of the one time I saw a Japanese lady wearing a kimono(?) on the subway in New York. She was hiding in the corner with her back facing the rest of the train. but I totally got it, cuz people still kept taking pictures of her. But what I could see was gorgeous. I love that in Japan, you won't stick out if you wear traditional Japanese clothing. It's so beautiful.

I know you guys are really busy with the FAPFAPs and WTATs and editing and whatnot, but I really like these TL;DRs as well - they're so few and far between now (;_;)
Hounestly, I'm just really interested in the answers to a lot of little stuff. Like, I was born and raised in Canada and am living in Korea now, but I've made a ton of Japanese friends. I hit it off really well with them, but because we grew up differently I wonder about the little things. For example, do japanese people share water bottles? (like drink straight from the same one) etc. etc. Just little things like that that would help me make better friends with Japanese people - although I'll admit I hounestly haven't had a problem with that so far n_n All the ones I've met are really great.

It's a lovely yukata! I'm not going to lie, at the end when you had put it on yourself I let out a "Oh girl, what have you done." It took me a whole summer to get it right. (I'm a little slow at learning some things) Once you get it down, I have a feeling you'll fall in love with wearing yukata. It feels so extravagant, but it's just as casual as a nice sundress and it's amazingly breathable.

Actually, there is a casual version of a kimono called a "Komon" meaning "small print". It's worn for things that you have to/ want to look a little nice for. For example, getting coffee with friends, going to parks or picnics, etc. It's basically the everyday kimono that was worn up until western style clothing was introduced. People tend not to wear komon much since they're all the fuss of a kimono with none of the formality, in my experience they're mostly worn and owned by enthusiasts like myself. Every woman will probably wear a furisode or hakama once of twice in their lives, but there is no societal need for komon anymore since yofuku became the dominant everyday wear.
I wore one of mine to Asakusa over the winter holiday and it's the best experience I've had since I moved to Japan. I highly recommend it!!

it's a shame people cant tell the difference between celebrating other cultures vs appropriating cultures in a disrespectful way.

+Simon and Martina Cultural Appropriation only applies when someone/a people takes something from a culture and pretends it's their own. You guys did such an amazing job at explaining Yukata and showing different sides of Japan. :D So I'd happily friendly 'argue' with anyone that this is a great example of people educating themselves on culture instead of simply appropriating it

Yukata wearing tips: You can use a folded tea towel tied to you with a strip of spare fabric to pad out your waist and help the yukata sit more straight. When tying the obi round your waist flip one end over your shoulder so that you only have to deal with the other end. The only fancy bits of technical stuff I would bother with is the board that goes in your obi to keep it flat. The belts you can just make out of spare strips of cloth. (My host mother was in the Kimono Club so I got squeezed into kimono and yukata quite often lol) Also UniQlo has a really good step by step video on how to tie a simple obi bow :) Your yukata is gorgeous btw Martina
