    Three Shanties (1943) - Malcolm Arnold (1921-2006)
    0:00 - Allegro con brio
    2:33 - Allegretto semplice
    4:09 - Allegro vivace
Though best known for his film scores, symphonies, and concertos, Malcolm Arnold wrote a number of vibrant and significant chamber works, such as this piece from the core wind quintet repertoire. Arnold exploits the full range of each instrument to create a colorful musical tapestry that is as delightful to perform as it is to hear. Listen for the dialogues and exchanges between the instruments, which are part of the lively, conversation-like nature of chamber music.
    - Allegro con brio: The opening movement is based on the shanty “What shall we do with the drunken sailor?” This movement depicts the sailor’s drunkenness through quickly varying tempos and wobbly-sounding atonality.
    - Allegretto semplice: The second movement is more tranquil and contemplative, with the melody of the shanty “Boney was a warrior” floating above a gently lilting accompaniment. This movement is slower and more introspective. A lovely melody is handed off between all five instruments -- most notably the French horn which starts and ends the movement.
    - Allegro vivace: The final movement, based on the shanty “Johnny come down to Hilo,” is a vivacious, rhythmic romp. This movement is creative, uniquely composed, and exciting. You won’t hear a better written woodwind quintet piece. Each instrument gets to shine, with a rhythmic melody passed throughout the ensemble.
