    I haven't done anything with barbies in a very long time, but having watched a lot of Jen's videos on various doll reviews and working at a retail store that has a large selection of barbies and other dolls, I can kind of see where some of the price here is coming from. Which is the clothing. The majority of 15 to 25 dollar, dolls, have single layered, clothing prices, often made of a plasticy, cheap material rather then actual fabric. They often only have surged hems, (so a raw hem with stitching to keep it from fraying), and if theres any detail to the clothing its usually just printed on the fabric to mimic what it's supposed to be. Here, both the blazer and leather jacket had a lining, with added 3D, non-printed details, the doll came with underwear, the stitches were very, very clean, and the dress had an actually gather for the bodice, not just printed detail. The clothes look like miniature versions of real clothing instead of dolls clothes. Now, the fact the dress is so transparent against the dolls skin is a negative, as is the issue Jen had with the pants. But this set in isolation feels like a collector set. Could there have been a couple more clothing items and a better stand for the price, yes I think so. But the fact the doll is a play to move styled body, and the visible quality of the clothing (compared to the 15 to 25 dollar barbies) is there, its definitely on the higher end. Would I pay that much, no. I just can understand were some of the cost is coming from.

    I gotta say, while I love the doll and all the fun outfits she comes with, I really don’t think this set is worth the $160 price tag. Both the doll and her clothes look very basic. Quite frankly there isn’t really anything that separates this set apart from cheaper barbies.
    If a company expects you to pay $160 dollars for a set, they should make it worth the price tag.
    For example: Perhaps a doll with more extravagant makeup or maybe even tinsel in her hair and clothes that are unique and high quality.
    If you’re a die hard Barbie collector and don’t mind the price that’s alright.
    This doll is still beautiful and her clothes are nice.
    I just think that Mattel should’ve put more creativity into this set to make it worth $160

      her body is made out of a sturdier plastic, her joints feel solid and tight, she uses the collector millie sculpt (which is smaller than playline millie), her hair is a high quality saran, she comes with two complete instagram trendy outfits AND the clothes are really well constructed (they have lining! the jacket has a functioning zipper! fabric handbag!) and are made of really nice materials. and lets not forget the packaging which is just stunning to look at and is made out a very nice sturdy carboard.
      its all in the details.

    When I saw that mine could not wear her pants with her underwear, I wasn’t surprised. Fabric thickness is in our real world scale and adds a lot of bulk to 1:6 scale dolls. Ruth Handler always said that was why the original doll was so incredibly thin, because the clothes added many “inches” to her frame. And keeping in mind that the original clothes were lined, and at least the same, if not probably much better quality, as the adult collector clothes in this set, that makes sense to me. (Not that I’m in any way absolving Handler for any body image problems the original Barbie may have caused generations of girls.)

      @Lèmon Lēe, I find it hard to believe, because I don’t think it had a negative effect on me. Barbie only had had a positive impact on me. She allowed me imagine everything I wanted to achieve in adulthood. But studies and other people’s experiences seem to show otherwise, so I wanted to be careful not to discount that in my comment.

    • @minmogrovingstrongandhealthy
      @minmogrovingstrongandhealthy 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      At this point this doll should be sort of low tier base and the price too considering I seen far better dolls made by other cheap manufacturers / toys.
      I can get a good jointed doll for 10 dollars even less, then clothing some include them some don't. But is kinda pointless because in both cases often they are terribly made. With rare occasions finding cheap great clothing items. If I would hunt down toys I would focus on the doll to be of great quality, everything else can be sourced elsewhere.
      I rather encourage kids so as adults to make their own clothing items, toy accessories etc.
      It's great for spending time with your kids (or any other kids really, friends or family same thing) and bond better.
      If it's collectors item and cost 150+ $ then it better come as one instead of looking and offer half of what I would get 10-20$ set that I can buy in a China store.
      But then again I can't compare Europe to European Union, USA and Canada, Russia, China, etc all regions have their own prices.
      HOWEVER if someone from west says that 100$ is expensive (which is common to hear) then what should I say who have a paycheck of 400 Euros a month and some have even less then that. There are places that get 500-1000 a month but it gets burned away in a few days on food, bills and whatever then you are back at the monthly grind again so you can get your next paycheck that you will see for 1 day ...

    Tbh I think she's adorable and the quality is definitely a step in the right direction, but $160 ad even the $100 in the us is just way too much especially considering many people have had quality control issues which shouldn't be happening at this price point. Plus, the dress seems really cheep and the zipper on the jacket isn't to scale. These wouldn't be HUGE issues at a $25 or even $50 price point, but for over $100 it's a no. I'll buy her if she goes on sale, or maybe I'll find the suit on ebay, but I think the appeal is more for hardcore barbie fans who aren't a fan of playline dolls or Integrity toys.

    Mattel really has some nerve pricing these dolls so high when you can get a better doll and clothing from a Rainbow High/L.O.L OMG for $26 💀💀 this Barbie is cute but is definitely a $30 playline doll, shame on you Mattel!

    • @freya1548
      @freya1548 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I just made the same point! With Rainbow High I get a doll, stand, comb, two outfits, socks, two pairs of shoes and an accessory of some sort for $20-25 (plus tax). Like why am I going to pay $75 more for the same thing just from Mattel. AND MGA has a great warranty so if you get a doll that isn't correct, like her knee is broken or her clothing doesn't fit her you can easily get a replacement no problem.

    • @xfairfaeriex

      While I love my Rainbow High dolls, my Krystal came with issues with her clothing that you could see straight through the clear packaging. I ordered her online because she was so hard to get at the time so I couldn't be picky with which one I got. I honestly feel weird getting so much for a doll for only $30. It makes me wonder what production was like (and the people affected by it) in order to make the dolls so inexpensive.

    I'm disappointed that the quality wasn't consistent throughout all items in the pack. Those flimsy shoes and awkward stand ruin everything. It's like going to a 5 star restaurant and being given plastic utensils and your wine coming in a juice box. I think it's a nice selection of clothing that you can play with and get a few different looks, but wish the dress wasn't see through and that the pants fit over the underwear. I like that some classic Barbie pink is included: "pink for girls" is sort of insulting, but Barbie owns that pink, and when she wears it, it's a statement of strength - no stereotype is going to hold her back! I'm not a fan of blonde haired/blue eyed dolls because they look so basic, but her hairstyle is pretty cute.

      The design comes from the Barbie Style account on Instagram. I think it’s complete and does reflect the style, but the quality is not quite up to the looks on the IG account. The clothing fabric and fit is not as good as it was in the prime years of the Barbie Fashion Model Collection, so you don’t really get that feeling of human clothes in doll scale. Just to note that Jen is in Canada, so if we’re talking Canadian dollars, you know you can’t get much for $50 in Canada, right? Barbie Extra is $45, including tax, and these clothes are way better than that.

    I'd recommend the BMR1959 Barbie dolls! They're also Made to Move (if memory serves me right, mine are packed away rn), have a lot of variety in skin tone, hair, and gender, plus some really wild outfits and stands. As far as I can tell, they aren't that hard to come by? But I haven't checked availability in some time and they are about 30 bucks when they aren't on sale. (I feel like it's easier to get a cheaper price on them though.) Edit: So I looked it up and some of the BMR1959 dolls might be harder to find but there are newer dolls called the Barbie Extra series that are quite similar to my mind; they aren't made to move but the in-between articulation. And of course, as Jen said, the wheelchair dolls are pretty easy to find... I still wanna get one sometime. Ahhhh.
    Another Edit: Forgot to add, I loved the review! Don't think I'd ever buy this particular doll though. I don't personally feel like the clothing and special display box is worth it for me. She's very nice though and mostly good quality at least.

    But the quality of somethings made myself kinda iffy about the price... First, that see-throught dress. By the photos on the box, it doesn't looks like it was intentional this kinda of "look", so, for me, it made the fabric look very cheap... And, like, couldn't they at least make a bra for her or something like that? Second the shoes that looked so bendable... Then the purse with that velcro... Then the stand... (and just now I notice, mrs. Jen haven't really talked about the glasses, right? I don't know if I like them or not by the look of it...)

  • @Sparrow-lh9qk

    Hold up... I wanna do a bit of math. I'm gonna use USD here. If you go onto Matel's website, the made to move dolls are $15. Clothes sets are about $10 each at Target, but the clothes in question are of a really nice quality, so I can see them going for $15-$20 each. So we're talking $45-$65 for the doll and clothes alone, but since the clothes are of such good quality, I'd be guessing more towards $65. I guess the doll is probably more meant as a collector's items or display piece instead of a children's toy, so that will make it more expensive. But for that price, they really should have thrown in a few more clothes and a decent stand. I can see a collector doing that math and deciding it's worth it for them, but I personally can't justify buying a $100 doll. At that price, I wouldn't be letting my kids play with it, and I also wouldn't put it on display. It would be teasing the kids (my daughter in particular loves dolls of all kinds and would be very upset she couldn't play with it) and the cats would likely knock it down for the kids to get their hands on, anyhow. It's not worth it to me, but again, I can see a collector buying it with no qualms. For a collector's, limited time piece, it IS, absolutely, worth the cost.

    Some states don't have tax, OR - No tax; WA - roughly (unless in Seattle) 8.7%, CA - GOOD LUCK!
    But she would come to about $110 where I in WA, unless I could find her in store in OR.
    My biggest problem with Barbie is they charge way to much for these sets.
    With my Rainbow High dolls they are between $20-$25 (plus tax) and I get a fully articulated doll, comb, nice doll stand, hangers, two (2) pairs of shoes, at least pair of socks, and on average 5 pieces of clothing (depending on the doll) to make two outfits or more if you mix and match, and an accessory of some sort (headband, earrings, etc). Which is just about equal to what this doll is.
    So why in the F does Mattel think they need to charge more? Heck the Avery Styles play set that comes with a doll, and a butt ton of clothing and other cool stuff its only $50! And MGA dolls go on sale pretty often. Thanks but I will keep with MGA, at least I feel like I get my monies worth from them, if she was $60 I would consider a Barbie Style doll but not at the price they are wanting.

    I hope this is a helpful hint and doesn't come off as bossy. When removing the taps from her head, just pull the plastic really hard and the taps pull right out of her head. I would like to take credit for this since I do doll unboxings, but I have to give credit to Suresh NY who has a TH-cam channel as well. Believe me, it works. My made to move barbie has the same janky elbow on the same side, and after messing with it a bit it also ended up working okay in the end. The price is much too high for me, but I love the blue dress, if I had the material I'd be tempted to make something like it myself. Other than vintage dolls I actually won't buy a Barbie that is not articulated because it takes some of the fun out of them. It's nice to see better quality but that price is super high for most people. It's a pain that Mattel won't just offer articulated dolls, with decent clothes for a reasonable price (like $50 and under).

      Not really considering their stand is not tall enough and the plastic shoes are so thing and they are concaving inward and bending ! Totally not worth the 💯 plus price tag ! A good 👍 start in direction I will say considering mattel history on thin cheap iron on 1 layer clothing’s . Barbie extra was way better with the layers ( have them all) Barbie look 2021 even Better but just kinda plain (still love them bc of the simple quality and diversity) I just kinda miss seeing the 80-90s dolls have better quality and uniqueness ! I really wish they would bring back my scene ! Just like how the bratz and monster high are getting a relaunch ! I would love ❤️ to see my scene come back !

    Great video. Her torso looks so weird to me. Maybe part of it is because there's no joint at her hip, but she just looks so out of proportion! The realistic but super tiny feet are also strange to look at (although I appreciate that they work with flat shoes, which I wish were standard for dolls instead of heels). Barbie's classic skinny figure is always a little skeezy to me though. The outfit seems very 80's throwback, which is a weird combo for the Instagram vibe - which the prom dress + biker jacket doesn't help. I like the pink pants / t shirt combo as she danced. :) Your outfits are much nicer.

But after seeing your doll stand, I’m nervous to look at mine. 😅 Yes, the price is quite high but both outfits I’ve voted for (including hairstyle) won… so, _of course_ I’m going to spend $160 on her. I'd be fine with this doll for half the price, or I'd prefer just fashion packs. The Barbie Looks dolls should arrive soon with a variety of body types, skin tones, and new faces. I think I'll hold out for those. I know what you mean about finding made-to-move dolls, but I've had decent luck by stalking them on walmart and amazon.ca. It was definitely easier and cheaper to get dolls/toys when I was still living in the US.

    At first I was excited - articulation, woo! - but the more I watched the less impressed I was. It's a collector's item, but nothing really stands out? The clothing quality (consistency across sets aside) is very well made but that isn't enough to sway me for that price point. This just makes me miss Monster High and their articulation-and-unique-face-sculpts-as-standard.

  • @Snuzzled
    @Snuzzled 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I feel like when I was a kid this was the standard of quality for Barbie dolls. I feel like the quality has gone significantly downhill especially in the past decade or so but even to an extent in the early 2000s I noticed a dip in quality in the clothing. There would be loose threads and wonky stitching to a greater extent than I ever noticed as a kid. The paint jobs also took a downgrade in quality with wonky eyes or scratched paint or just mismatched paint jobs on the face or accessories. I don't think we can expect this level of quality for the $10 or $15 dolls that you get at Walmart, but perhaps with a slight price range increase to $40 to $50 or maybe even $60 for some of the "premium dolls" would be reasonable for this level of quality considering inflation.

    Made to Move bodies sometimes will have stiff articulations. You have to jiggle it until it comes loose.

    I can't believe mattel have the cheek. The doll is a basic £15 made to doll... And the clothes are nice but after seeing them a few times they just become basic too. so they really need to work on that.. at the most the doll should of been priced in the 30's maybe 40's but that is pushing it..

I’ll have to see how they actually turn out, but I don’t want all 4 at this price, so will probably just get the 1 or 2 I like most. I’m also hoping they drop to $120 CAD + tax, which could happen, since this one has already dropped a bit since her debut.
