  • Using Photoshop and After Effects without requiring any additional plugins, create a moving scene where a face show perspective change all from a single still photograph.
    In this tutorial I run you through how to make displacement maps, how to cut out a subject from a still and fill in the background behind them to have a separate background and foreground, and then animate it all together in After Effects.

    As the old saying has it, critics discuss art, artists discuss tools. Thank you for posting this fascinating look at your methods.•Really useful demonstration for creating the displacement map; much easier than the way I've done. •Also the demo of After Effects makes its cost clearly worthwhile for animation, rather than doing it frame by frame manually.•Your workaround for holding an image in place by dabbing the corners tells me you've been at this awhile, since that's a fix for an old problem Adobe's never resolved.

    Very well explained. I am glad you suggest using layer masks - a much better idea. I have found that when creating the clean plate you can use the original selection as you did (you can also access this by alt/option clicking on the layer mask) but then expand/grow the mask by perhaps 20 or 30 pixels using select modify before using the content aware fill. This will leave fewer artefacts to clean up.

    I must say, this is pretty sweet! I knew about 2.5D, but the displacement map is something else. That opacity thing with the brush on the displacement map is cool, also. Means you don't have to up the brightness manually to get whiter and whiter.

    OK wait a minute, after watching your tutorial again i realized i was experiencing the displacement map layer issue you warned about. The trouble starts in ps just like you warned. I think i have it figured out now. This is a big catastrophic issue and should be stressed more. Thank you very much!!

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Max camilion Glad I could help. It is an odd issue alright! took me a while to figure it out as I had the exact same problem when I made this tut!

    • @ikesu_kily
      @ikesu_kily 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dodmedia I may be wrong, but I think it's not an issue, but the normal behavior. When you imported in AE, you choose "retain layers size", which means, each layer will be cropped to its content size (and when masked, the content visible), not the PS artboard size. But the layers are perfectly placed into the AE Comp created by the import (which adapt the position of each layer). The thing is, you deleted it to create a new one, and then you lost the information of position the import had.
      To resolve that problem, not choising "retain layer size" will resolve it, OR retain layer size, but keep the original comp created by AE, and resize it directly.
      I don't like very much the retain layer size, because in 2.5D, if you edit one of the layers afterwards, and add/remove content in PS, the layer size will change and so its position in 3D space (X,Y position). Butat the same time having a comp size layer with just a little bit of content in a middle of an sea of emptiness is... overkill and difficult to handle if you, by example, try to rotate in 3D the layer.
      Hope, enven after 4 years, it can help ;)

      +David O'Dwyer This might be a silly question, but what's the importance of the layer you create by going over and over the image to show the closest parts of the image?
      You don't use that layer in After Effects (or did I miss something)?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Sgt Unit indeed I do and it's a very important layer when it comes to using the 'Displacement Map' effect on the face layer. Even though you disable the layer's visibility in the comp, AE still needs the black and white info from it to know how to distort the face properly to give it the illusion of a perspective shift. Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the great video , my question is , would this still give the same depth or the 3D effect if used on a 3D screen or a VR ?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simple answer: no.
      3D screens and VR work by having two images from slightly different perspectives which overlap when you look at them. 3D uses special phase glasses which only reveals one image per eye, tricking the mind into thinking it's looking at a 3D item in front of them. VR uses one image in front of each eye so when you look through the headset it will show you both images at the same time. This technique is called 2.5D because it only works with 1 image.
      HOWEVER what you could potentially do is create this animation twice, with the same camera movement shifted back a bit, that way one eye would see more of the left of her face, and one eye would see more of the right of her face. And that SHOULD make it seem like a stereoscopic image. I'd be really interested to know if that works..

    just perfect explanation, thanks. I just have a question, why do you use null objects instead of moving the camera directly? thanks

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mar Bel Thank you! That's a good question: The reason to use null objects is because their P position slides along the Y X and Z axes, whereas the camera's position will orbit it around its point of interest. So image that the null object serves as a straight dolly and the camera's position serves as a curved dolly. Make sense? What's cool is that by using a Null Object you can combine the two and get some super smooth camera movements in a 3D space.

    This is just one option for 2.5D AE Parallax Effect and I must say the most time consuming and complexed one. I personally like layering approach or vanishing points.

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rayhan Qadri Indeed there are many shorter and simpler ways to do it but if you want the displacement map to add that perspective shift then unfortunately you need to put the time into it. Vanishing point can look great or it can look absolutely rubbish, and it's a fair bit of work aligning all the planes once you've imported them from Photoshop. Each to their own I guess.

    Piece of advice here, you can remove her from BG quicker if after selecting you go to select->modify->expand usually sth between 10-20 px do the trick and than you hit content aware, just make sure you have some feathering in this selection 5 px is usually enough but it's obvious that these values depending on your picture resolution.

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many thanks! I've indeed recently started using that method, having seen in in a another tutorial, and I combine that with the spot healing brush after the content aware fill, to really speed through a subject extraction. Works a charm :-)

    • @genesis2303
      @genesis2303 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the time I don't have to even touch the healing brush(I use it only when BG is more complicated), after expanding just press shift + F6 to choose feather value and with BG like this in your tut should do.

    I'm trying to follow your instruction, but the biggest changing is with the Puppet Pin, not the Displacement Map. So, with or without DM, parallax is already happen smoothly

    Please help, I tried to follow along and when I have it set up as you do in this video, when I test the movement on the horizontal displacement -the effect won't work ont he face where I obviously need it to, instead it takes place below. I can't figure out how to get the effect to only affect the face of the picture. I double click on the layer trying to figure this out and cannot. What is going on?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Max camilion Hi Max, did you move the layer's position in Photoshop by any chance? Either the face layer or the Disp Map layer? I've noticed for some reason After Effects struggles if you do that. Try Pre-Comping the Disp Map layer and the Subject layer into their own individual comps and apply the effects to those comps instead. That should do the trick.

    • @oscarfilms9375
      @oscarfilms9375 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok I'll try that!! Thank you very much for that prompt reply BTW!

    • @oscarfilms9375
      @oscarfilms9375 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok so I precomposed the face layer and then brought the black and white over layer above it. I applied the dsip map effect to my face layer after precomposing it. It seems to have worked however my face layer which includes downward below chest now moves entirely when I only wanted the face to move. -And it seems that the black and white luminance layer isn't needed after all. It doesn't seem right according to how you've done it. Any ideas??

    • @dodmedia

      umm... I guess the same way, but you shouldn't need to do it with footage... That's the whole point, footage can give you that movement naturally.

    Real question! Why not just eliminate the cloning of the background by taking a separate picture of the background before the foreground enters the picture?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the idea is to teach the trick. Sure that would work if you shot it yourself and knew at time of shooting that you wanted to animate it. But knowing how to clone out the background means you can do this to any photo.

      Hi Sian, I'm sorry about that. I think if you're new to After Effects it may be worth your while following some tutorials on getting started, which would cover many shortcuts which will speed up your workflow considerably. It would certainly make this tutorial much easier to follow!

    • @edoehagin
      @edoehagin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok iv just checked-
      when i try to create just 2 layers in photoshop- the map and the image itself, it works fine.
      but when i separate the object from the background and create 3 layers- the displacement map looks bad.

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Edoe Hagin I've had this issue before when I was using a cropped version of a photo in Photoshop. If you create a gray solid layer in After Effects and put some noise on it, and then apply the displacement map to that layer, does the displacement of the noise match the location of the actual disp map, or is it off centre? Does that make sense?

    • @edoehagin
      @edoehagin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +David O'Dwyer not sure i understood you but i when i try it the displacement of the noise is off center

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Edoe Hagin Ok, it's what I thought then. Try pre-composing the displacement map layer and choose move the asset into a new comp. Then use that new comp as the displacement map instead. That should fix it.

      DOD Media hi, when I apply the displacement effect and select my new layer and select luminance, but it doesn't affect my image at all. I've even tried using a black and white check layer, but no result.

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you certain you didn't change the scale of the photoshop document or the crop at any point? That seems to be the main issue with the displacement map effect. Try creating a small solid and then precomping it, and then use that precomp as a displacement map, and see if it has any effect?

    • @iammoog
      @iammoog 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I made my photoshop doc at 1920x1080, so that should cacnel out that issue i think? I did try pre-comping it anyway, but no change. I'll take another look at my project later, but thanks for the help!

      @dodmedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sri, first of all what is the resolution of the photo that you're using, and what are your computer specs?

    • @sriramanmuralikrishnan8341
      @sriramanmuralikrishnan8341 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i got 8gb rom with 512mb grphic car i 3 processor ,1920*1080 is the resolution

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What speed is your i3 processor? After Effects relies mainly on Processor and RAM. your Graphics card sadly doesn't play much of a role (yet) :-(
      So you're using a photo that you've cropped to 1920x1080? And then placing it in a comp that is also 1920x1080, right?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also what frame rate is your Comp set to? If you're using 30fps and you've got 19780 total frames, that's nearly 11 minutes of parallax, which is definitely going to take some time to for Ae to render.

    • @sriramanmuralikrishnan8341
