    In 2016, after getting bored from painting the map to my color in Rome 2, I tried Attila and I fell in love with it since then. It was the first time I actually opened the campaign objectives because painting the map was impossible. I engaged in all mechanics to gain every little edge over the enemies. I lay ambush in the forest in front of my settlement to catch enemies' advances. I used "raider" units to burn settlements in battle but didn't occupy it after that to keep enemy busy while still kept it avaliable for capture later on. In tough port siege battles, I trained marines to land inside their city while the main force attack from the other side. Turned out the marines were pretty good in melee combat even against other pure land units. Everything feels so good and so rewarding. Those experiences I've never had when playing Rome 2.

    I own them all except for warhammer 3 (thank you CA collection/steam sale!), but I’ve only properly tried a handful of them. Shogun 2 was my first, and the only one I fully finished the map, but I also tried Rome, Rome 2, Attila, Empire, Troy, Warhammer 1 & 2, and am currently going though Three Kingdoms. Attila is by FAR my favourite. It’s something about the map (there are enough waterways and pinch points to feel more comfortable with making bold moves but positioning yourself to not be completely surrounded all the time), but also just strikes the balance where faction uniqueness isn’t SO story driven or otherwise over the top (except for the hordes of course), and the battles have never felt so brutal and down to earth. The defence maps especially, with the barriers and topography feeling really important, instead of just a bunch of grid based streets and hard walls/towers just really opens up strategic opportunities. It’s the only game in the series I’ve successfully launched a heroic victory against an insane army by kamikaze-ing a general’s boat before it landed at my paltry settlement that had a mere three unit garrison, and that felt like nothing else (although, full disclosure, I never play legendary/legendary and generally just cheese my way through low difficulty… it’s hard enough, ok!)

    • @thisistotalwar
      @thisistotalwar  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good point about that it's not to story driven. I am not a fan when the game hold your hand to much, where to bonuses you get are too good to ignore basically :)

    Atilla is basically a Medieval: Prologue Total War for me. M2 is probably my all time fav, and Atilla is its survival strategy, self-genre predecessor. Very dark in style too. Amazing thing about it, is that most countries and factions get shuffled around the map, a lot. Which history-wise was eye-opening. Play this game people, it's Total War at its best!

  • @dnzdb1601
    @dnzdb1601 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    i think there is no BEST total war game because each game has unique features depending on their timeline (not release date, the time it covers).
    BUT, i can say that ATTILA is the most gourmand/elite game above the rest. its survival mechanics add extra option for decision-making and it leads players to use units' functions and factions' abilities at optimal level. you just can't simply rely on numeric advantage on battlefield. or the game don't allow you to play tall in campaign. each factions' features (both cultural and militaristic) give more opportunities more than other games.
    the reason ATTILA become not appreciated is that survival mechanics and slow rate of growth economically. i think most tw players chose comfort-fun over high-thinking and detailed-management. if ATTILA had better UI menu and non-greedy dlc policies, it would had more respect.

    • @thisistotalwar
      @thisistotalwar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hehe shieet where to start... :) No but it is dependant on which faction, but here are some pointers:
      1. Economy early game - go for the farm buildings that produce most wealth.
      2. Don't leave squalor unchecked. If u do it is just a matter of time before disease spreads, affecting your income and PO.
      3. Immigration will increase where there is a war and decrease PO (max out at -9).
      4. Assume that you are going to be attacked more compared to other TW games. So plan your expansion carefully. It really is about survival from the get go for most factions.
      5. Politics - keep the "bar" roughly in the middle. This is decided from influence. If your court has about the same amount of influence as you your family tree, you are going to be om 50 %. So have an eye on this when doing different political actions. Your faction leader should have the most out of all to keep loyalty in check. If someone drops to 2 loyalty - disband immidiately.
      Thats a few things to keep in mind atleast. Btw sorry for misspelling - on the go here :))

    But vanilla Attila campaign is probably the worst campaign ever with absolutely terrible 'features' whose only purpose is to make the game artificially more 'difficult': Winter is coming nonsense, nuking provinces, endless scripted hunnish hordes, degenerative technology, ridiculous upgrade system etc etc.

    I agree with everything you said about Attila except for your conclusion. I'm in agreement with some people that believe that Attila should have been an expansion for Rome 2. Attila could have achieved the same love and admiration as Fall of the Samurai, the Shogun 2 expansion. But as a stand alone game? It never had a chance to ever be seen as the best total war of all time, even with the optimization and added content. And the reason for that was the deep disappointment with Rome 2. Gamers fell in love with what Rome 2 should have been and Attila is only a reminder of some of the promise that was left unfulfilled with Rome 2. I think Attila is overall a better overall game than Rome 2 but I play Rome 2 way more than Attila.
    Which total war is the best? I have Rome 1 and Shogun 2 as the best, but I play Rome 2 the most of all the total war games. I do like Attila by the way, I just wish it was an expansion and not a stand alone game, then perhaps Rome 2 would have benefitted from Attila's features.

    It's so unrealistic, bland and incredibly easy to destroy major factions. I really wish someone does a full province expansion rework like with Rome. Because the easiness to conquer the Roman empire or to eliminate the Alamanns and Quadi is insane.
    This way you can actually have the Goths, Alamanns, Franks, Burgundians and Saxons be real threats.
    As well as the migrators being way smaller in the long run, weakened and united. Like, there are is only one Visigothic and Ostrogothic factions (considering the Greuthungians are meant to represent the Crimean Goths.
    In reality there were many and both Alaric and Theoderic had to unite them. Even large ones such as Radaigasus' one which Alaric could only bring under him after Stilicho had made them Foederati and he was betrayed alongside them.
    Not only this, but the fact your general or horde can't scape the battle in many unrealistic ways, like what?. Neither can you take the enemy's defeated army as Foederati and making them join you as the Romans did.
    Nor can the huns vassalize other nomadic factions like they did.
    And where are the Scirii? Herules? Juthungi? Salian Franks and Batavians? The Hasdingi Vandals? The Acatzirii and Frisii? Where are all the many relevant Germanic tribes of the time period
    Yea sure, both Scirii and Acatzirii appear as hunnic recruitable troops but they were major players. It was the Scirii who supposedly were Odoacer's tribe.
    Also, the Gaepids are were an Ostrogothic Hunnic alligned state should be (the one of Theoderic Strabo I think) while appulum should be their homeland and the Iazyges settled west of them, not nomadic at this point.
    Also, lol, the Roxolanii are up north, the Gelonii just disappear but if the Budinii do exist.
    And the Anteans should try aim for that land of the Gaepids which became their heartland as they mixed with the Goths and later with the Roman dacians that came there during the middle ages, forming the wallachians.
    Also, almost no proper Sclaveni and Antean cavalry, not even in the Roman expedition which were the main reinforcements to Belisarius in one ocassion.
    The Armenians aren't tributaries, the Tanukhids cannot sign a peace treaty like in real life, the Germanic settlements in Gaul give no benefit to the Romans nor easiness for the Alamanns and Burgundians to settle, the Bavarii ain't a thing later on either (though to be fair they are a mutt with Rugians and other peoples of the area).
    It's a great game, but it's more of a modding base, like the Huns straight up extinguish tribes instead of destroying them until they either migrate or accept their overlordship.

    Sorry but i must disagree, i think it is actually the weakest title of them all. Rome 2 TW was a conceptual mess, and Attila feels like they took this mess, ran it through a mixer and spilled it over the map again. I am in late-mid game so to speak and this for me is the case: there was never any point in strategysing, never an epic clash with another faction, never any meaningful diplomacy, never any meaningful research, building or trading, never any meaningful agent actions, it never even matter how i composed my armies, spoken plainly: there was never anything resembelign a strategy game. At the beginning i lucked through some conflicts and after i had like 4 or 5 cities the whole thing was completele challengles. I play on hard difficulty.. i mean played, it is just a chore now. Why people rate this game so high is beyond me.

It's my most played game on steam (and in total only second to Minecraft). I love the migration period and the game is what got me into the two subjects "History" and "Prehistory and Early Archaeology". I play one big campaign every year (used to be more). I just don't like the Warhammer games (bought both of them) and even the new historical games like Three Kingdoms just didn't interest me. I also could never get into Shogun II. Attila Total War still aged like a fine wine. Because 5 years later, most of the game mechanics from Attila Total War were brought over to Three Kingdoms Total War. Sure there are many new additions in Three Kingdoms Total War such as :
    1. fixing the limited governor issues
    2. character assignment mechanics
    3. character ancillaries mechanics
    4. five elements generals mechanics
    5. human relations mechanics
    6. population system mechanics
    7. army logistic supply mechanics to deal with winter attrition
    8. overhauled diplomacy
    However, the rest of core campaign and battle mechanics were actually pioneered in Attila Total War. When you play Three Kingdoms Total War's records mode you will find that it is basically a heavily reworked version of Attila Total War.
