I can't count the number of times I cried my eyes out watching this performance. Their message us not just important, is vital. Feeling seen, heard and not alone at an age when everything is uncertain is huge. And that is their superpower.

Thank you for your reaction! I was so touched.
This song was written for a TV program broadcast by NHK (Japanese public broadcaster) on Adult's Day in Japan.
That year (2016), the voting age was lowered from 20 to 18 in Japan.
Some 18-year-olds were bit confused about being suddenly given the right to vote and assume responsibility for society.
NHK asked One OK Rock to write a song to encourage them, and created a TV program in which they performed with 1,000 18-year-olds.
Since then, NHK has held 18 Fes every year, although it was not held in 2020 due to Covid-19. Last year YOASOBI wrote a song for the youth. This year Mrs. Green Apple will do it.

Japan changed the voting age and this was a promotion to create awareness and get them to vote. It was a great initiative so well done Japan. Really promoting positive self awareness in their youth, telling them they count ❤

They speak for young people which is beautiful and should be done more, but also for anyone who has struggled to find a voice in their lifetime. I'm so looking forward to seeing them live in October. There is something SO incredibly powerful about uniting through music. Music is such a deeply personal experience, and to share that with others is so special. I remember you talking about how you were afraid after covid of a world without concerts, and I totally agree. Thousands of people singing and sharing that love is very VERY tangible. Then this song on top of it is fantastic. How do you not get emotional watching a performance like that?!?! My brother and I got to meet them, and they were so kind and welcoming and sincere. They truly love their fans and it shows. We all need to be one another’s colors in the dark. 🥰💜

    You're absolutely right.
Taka taking that moment to send that message, to give that push to send off those youths into the "adult" world is, as you said, so very telling of who they are as people and what they hold true to their hearts.
Not only this performance, but I've seen Taka try to send out all sorts of encouraging messages to the masses and it's really, simply put, amazing.
(Although, I will say this, considering NHK is right wing media, seeing them choose bands like ONE OK ROCK to perform for their 18 fes is quite ironic, in my opinion. I'm going to take it a step further and assume that the reason why they're all dressed in modest long sleeves is to hide their tattoos.)

This performance was one of the first videos I saw of OOR and I cried so much. Even as an almost 40 year old I can relate to this message. I recently realized the lyrics can have an additional meaning if you think of them saying "we are, too":
When you're standing on the edge (we are, too)
So young and hopeless (we are, too)
    etc.
No matter what, WE ARE the same

The 18 Fes was created to celebrate Japan’s lowering voting age from 21 to 18. Hence the 18 Fes.
One Ok Rock wrote this song to tell all the 18 yr olds to have and keep their passion, no matter what may happen in their lives. This was the first time “We Are” debuted to the world.

As I understand it this performance and song were to mark the lowering of the age of majority from 20 to 18 (there had been an earlier partial change). Thus overnight a huge number of 18-20 year olds had a massive change to their lives which I feel is why this song has such a massive significance. It is imo also why Taka’s words are so impactful. The NHK 18fest was to mark this momentous change and a number of bands were involved.

This was One Ok Rock’s idea. They are always thinking of their fans and this was a special way to connect with them.
One Ok Rock is different, they really love their fans as you can tell how they encourage them to sing along when they’re in concert.
This song has been sung by so many kpop artists, matter of fact, a lot of their songs have as if they are trying to compete with Taka’s renditions and voice. Doesn’t work.😂

    この最初のワンオクの18FESが素晴らしかったので、コロナなどありながらも、今もほぼ毎年のように続いているのよね。
    他のアーティストとの回も素晴らしいから見てほしいな☺️

Worth noting that when taka lets them take over that his visibly emotional and composing himself and his breathing … meanwhile tomo and ryota are like .” Can you fuckin believe this “ by far my fave one ok rock live performance next to let me let you go live and clock strikes luxury disease version .
Can’t wait for the upcoming orchestra mix live of ending story … that will blow your freaking mind 🤷🏻‍♂️
Worth looking at dreamcatcher ‘it’s live ‘ band version of justice
And my first story x Hyde live version of mugen ( demon slayer s4 op)
