Total Genius. Years ahead of his contemporaries. Saw him at open air concert, regent's park. No more Spencer the Rover just "Solid Air".....Now he's somewhere over the rainbow. Miss those days it truly believe that there was a sweet certain suprise. Not to be repeated!!!
I caught John Martyn at a folk club in late 70’s somewhere near Brighton his beat up guitar was resting on an amp there were a couple of foot pedals all held together with gaffa tape and wires he sat down and started playing and it was like wtf ....he was mesmerising...the man was genius with a voice that was just beautiful ...you could here a pin drop ...a real treasured memory of a talented man..
tim rundall ...yes it was lewes.....he had a sheepskin coat on and just sat down and off he went.... youtube has bought it all back and watching him now you realise even more just how brilliant he was.....
My big bro seen him at a folk club near Brighton in the early 70s too I wonder if you guys met? Ian Tindal, long haired hippy looked like the singer from led Zep to ten years old me, he had an Afghan coat no shoes, occasionally sandals , coolest guy I am related too. My bro introduced me to the best music, he left a guitar in a cupboard in a Bristol squat it was a Red Les Paul sunburst, he plays a similar style to John absolutely takes me to a different frame of mind listening to John or my bro. Pat metheny x John Martin and that’s my bros style. Also you and him are so lucky to hear young John Martin live. When I was old enough to go concerts it was hit or miss if he’d even show up at the venue sadly. The Pogues were my favourite band . Different than John but still unique and genius in there own way. I play flute and tin whistle
Just discovered John in '22 rip big man never heard anything like. Unbelievably good is all I can say. Been listening to him daily since I first heard may you never
Incredible!! John was so ahead of his time. There were no pickups for acoustics in 78 & that appears to be a stray single coil duct taped to his guitar. Not to mention the drum machine & ( tape) delay he is using.... bloody genius!!
Man there was DeArmond pickups for acoustic guitars since the 1930s (Muddy Waters used one in those legendary fisrt recordings) and Martin made the pickup-equiped Martin D-28E and D-18E in the 1950s. Other very famous examples pre-1978 are Big Joe Williams guitar (check the internet for some pictures if you haven't seen it, it's amazing) and John Lennon's sixties Gibson J-160E with a factory-mounted pickup. John Martyn was a genius and way way ahead of his time in many respects, but not in this one 😉
I. Was lucky enough to see him twice both times he was on the wagon so absolutely brilliant. He used his voice like an instrument absolutely amazing genius. Rip John
Regardless of your Irish joke during the gig, a lot of people in Ireland adore your music. Strange, but I always hear a man struggling to be free and singing the most beautiful songs whilst during so. Your music will always be heard/played/sung in Ireland. I hope they have Martin guitars in paradise, John.
It's a special thing when a musician can captivate an audience - even decades on over the Internet- with just their voice and a guitar. Big love to John.
Used to watch John at the Highcliffe on a Thursday in Sheffield in the late 60’s with a few other who became legends He was a great inspiration to us all ✌🏽🤓🙏
This wild man will forever and ever be one of my very few yet precious musical heroes. Gosh it’s like being run over by a truck made of velvet. “-Pass the small cigars..” “-Love song coming up..!”
I could cry to think i saw him and met him.....if i could go back there is so much i would love to ask him...he was so ahead of everyone he had a magnificent talent and he didn’t waste it ... the cheeky smiley face he had made him very endearing in between singing his brilliant songs....all these things i remember with such affection ....lovely film clips bring it all back....the biggest thumbs up to this man..
Rip John martyn the love song legend. There will never be anyone that comes close to being able to sing with that much emotion and change it up everytime he sang. Wonderful.
Solid Air I also attribute to Beverly Martyn. After their divorce he went into the studio and created almost every modern paradigm. Who else could make a whole song so personal with his new fangled wah wah usage> Like Big Muff...
