    Mahler has been my favorite composer all my life and i was slightly anxious how a piano transcription could render the sound of the famous adagietto. And you've done it. This is magnificient and haunting. This is so expressive and respects so well the soul of Mahler's music. A huge bravissimo to you. A wonderful discovery.

    I have listened three times now and feel certain this is the absolute best transcription of the symphonic movement - passion, dynamics, pacing, tension, and orchestral richness. The base - with pedaling - is appropriately haunting.

    If there is a way of showing deeper understanding of Mahler's music in general, and then of this very piece of music in particular, this outstanding piano performance is the undoubtful proof of it. All the important finest musical texture, dynamics, harmonic resolving, leeding lines and blending colours make an listener even more engaged in comprehending and experiencing the essence of Mahler's musical message to the mankind.

      @@BeatriceBerrut Dear Beatrice, thank you for your generous answer, I am so grateful that internet enables us to see and hear valuable efforts of extraordinary artists in delivering artistic achievements of the first class to the wider audience worldwide. Despite being a musician myself, just as a fan of musical arts I find exciting if one can extract as much from potentials of some musical piece as you certainly did in this transcription of yours. This particular movement of Mahler's symphonic masterpiece is undoubtfully the first piece of music that an average listener associates with the name of the composer, in many cases the only one too. Therefore we can take for granted the statement that it contains basic principles of Mahler's musical language, although it is not completely true. Anyway, the difficulties of transferring slow developing strings texture to piano - an instrument with completely different tone production system - is a task of many layers, not to mention the specific late romantic search for complex harmonies coming out from individual horizontal melodic lines, forming thus by interweaving with each other, exchanges between consonant and dissonant chords. Therefore I appreciate your rendition even more, because I find it the most complete of all similar attempts I used to hear so far, where you expressed all the existing longing pain incorporated in those famous Mahler's bars, without losing any of its colour, swaying moods and main stones of compositional architecture. Thank you very much for this beautiful expression of your musicality and supreme pianism!

    The Adagietto introduced me to the world of classical music, a world i knew existed but hadn’t cared to visit before. I know not whether this version is technically perfect, or if Mahler would have liked it. I do know how it makes me feel. To me, it is as perfect as i could imagine. It feels right. It’s profoundly beautiful. It conveys both the ecstacy of being in love and the anxiety of fearing rejection by the one you feel you can no longer live without. I cannot help be moved by it. Wonderful! Thank you so, so much!

      @@BeatriceBerrut You made it easy for me to open my heart. Mahler’s music helped me through a rough period in my life, and i would have never thought it possible for a single instrument to take me on the same emotional rollercoaster as the orchestral version of the Adagietto, but you did it! I wish you well. Take good care of your health. And who knows, when the pandemic is finally over, and you can perform again in front of live audiences, i might be so lucky to get a seat and hear you play.

    How beatifully the Adagietto is played in this transcription by the pianist Beatrice Berrut. I remember it vividly in the film version of Death in Venice. My favorite movement of Mahler's 5th is strangly and oddly enough the Rondo Finale, it is filled with such Mozartian joy of spirit through the repeated main theme that it is in deep contrast to the 6th, of course the death of his daughter had happened. Thank you for posting such a lovely performance of the Adagietto.

    I did a reduction of the full score of this piece to short score SATB, a few years ago, preserving every note of the original (with some doubling up); and to my surprise, it could be played straight away as a romantic piano piece, falling perfectly under the fingers. A musicologist could tell us if this is so or not; but I concluded that Mahler probably wrote this at the piano, then orchestrated it? In any case, this is a beautiful performance, that preserves the soul of the music. Many thanks.

    • @BeatriceBerrut
      @BeatriceBerrut  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It is funny you mention that, because by transcribing some other works by him, I always came to the same conclusion : they all seem to have been written for piano :) He indeed used to play his symphonies on the piano, but hard to tell how he really thought, an orchestrated piano, or a reduced orchestra? Anyways, mind-blowing music. Best wishes, Beatrice

      My only issue w/ Alexandre Tharaoud's transcription is it gets a bit virtuo-esque and in the process it loses the veil of thin, bare beauty of the work. That's not to say it's not beautiful in its own right but I just would not put it in this category of "Adagietto" . . . it's the same melody. It's just a different song.

    Magnificent! You make this sound like a piece that was meant to be for piano, not like a transcription at all. Easy to forget this is from a wonderful symphony, since you make it sound so good on the piano and hang together so well. I have heard fine orchestral renditions and even organ versions, but your version is now my favorite. If Mahler wrote the original Adagietto as a love song to his wife, then this transcription should be a love song to you. So glad I found this; thank you.

    I've just subscribed to your YT channel with the specific intention of being notified when this wonderful transcription of yours becomes available for purchase. I'm currently learning a transcription which is referenced *1998 Edition Peters No 7477* with a short editorial by Ian Flint. it's very nice and as with other transcriptions more or less follows the orchestral score quite faithfully but your very generous reading is quite magnificent and transforms the piece into a worthy individual entity for any repertoire.
    Brava, Maestra!

    Just stunningly well beautiful! That said myself even though the phrasing demands it I would not speed up in the movement phrases because part of the beauty of this piece is in hearing one note . . . in contrast to the notes behind it and in front of it and so even though the phrasing kind of calls for it, it I would probably play all the passages with movement a little bit slower. But other than this the voicing is superb! I've probably listened to this 25 times it's gorgeous. I never thought this piece could be done on the piano and you've pulled it off magnificently I'm so impressed!!!
