This brings back memories of using arrays of bytes in 6502 assembly language to play Beethoven's 9th on my Apple II Plus in 1981. My mom would read the notes from the musical score and I would use a lookup table I had made to come up with frequency and duration values, then type them in. The result when played was the melody as a square wave output on the speaker. Fun times!

Nice work dude, & ditto to 8bit weapon. I had the first apple II from 1977. A lot of people don't know this but the original was rushed into production with a serious design flaw: it had no vents in that thick plastic enclosure. Jobs wanted it to be completely quiet & since there was no fans, this caused it to heat up like an oven & the power supplies all failed. Mine was replaced under warranty (they replaced the PS, not the enclosure). After that I only ran it with the top cover off, with no problems ever again. Later in '77 they figure out that they needed the cooling vents which were added to all machines after that. But, if you put that double disk drive unit on top it still partially blocks the vents & cooling. Run it w/o the top cover & it will be fine.

If you ever done much car stereo stuff big power anyway, capacitors or caps as we used to call them were used to lighten the sudden draw from the cars battery and eventually the alternator. Makes it so your headlights don't dim slightly when a sudden low bass note hits. And saves you from having your alternator die as quick

Less is more, pretty good work with such limitations. I started making beats on an amiga at the start of the 90's using software called protracker and which had 4 tracks and could sample, pretty nice sounding, and could do bit reduction for extra tonal effect. Thats light years ahead of the apple 2 so I was pretty impressed with what you achieved here. There is a lot to be said for limitations, the less you have the more you push yourself for creativity.

And oh, your were talking about papers and someone recently remind that my elementary school teacher printed our documents with a alcoholic blue ink (that smelled really good) with a Ronéo duplicator, an ancestor of the current printing techniques that is called "spirit duplicator". Probably the "oldest technique" with which I have a direct link. ;)
By the way, I am really impressed by the 8" Disks (they deserve a D because of the size! ;) )
Storytelling, again, my grandfather used to instal and maintain IBM punched-card computers. I liked that he tells me about these machines that occupied a whole room to perform calculations and stats, almost without visual interface. Crazy time, from our point of view.

Rad! I'm currently working on a track that uses CV drum, which is a drum machine for the Colecovision. The trick is using a VCR for the audio out, since getting audio out of a coax is something you can probably do but I can not. But, with my VCR, I connect the Colecovision to the VCR and then I use the RCA video out to go to a TV and the audio RCA out to go to my USB audio interface. Works like a charm! God, I used to play Oregon Trail on an Apple II back in grade school. Looking at it now makes me realize I grew up in the dark ages. How come the school I went to never had a music production tool for the Apple II? I would have loved that as a kid! Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade my memories of Oregon Trail for the world, but why couldn't we have both? It would have prepared me for eventually using LSDJ and Nanoloop, which also require you to be clever about balancing drums and melody as there are only 4 tracks---2 pulse wave channels, a wave channel, and a noise channel. But, as always, out of limitation comes creativity. Great vid, LMNC! Looking forward to part 2!

Silver Fox so cool - like a budget Linn Drum. Can’t remember why mine needed intervention (it was broken from my brother who was olderr and earning, (and could break Mount Rushmore it he was asked to dust it!). My first ever solder job and at a time I got lent a fostex X15 AND a CX5M FM music computer. Ended up gigging along to the tape with a Korg Poly 800 (inverted keys) around my neck.
      And yes, I had a mullet 😂🤣😂

Ok. So, junior year of H.S., I took computer science. We were trained to program on one of these PCs.
Never learned anything as complex as this on it.
    Wild.

Rifa and Wima MP capacitors always go after 15-30 years (even new and unused ones) but i actually never heard of one causing fire. Replace with an X2 or Y2 class capacitor that is not of the MP paper dielectic type.
Their goal is to filter out radio interference. Computer equipment has a lot of stuff inside that cause all kinds of horrible buzzing and roaring noises on the radio, these capacitors counter that.

I like the half-speed song quite a bit. Nicely done.
The limitations kind of remind me of Korg DS-10. It doesn't have nearly as many limitations as this, of course, and it's a great piece of software. I brought it with me when I went to the beach for a week of vacation and spent a lot of time just making songs with my DS. It was a hell of a lot of fun. You're limited by the number of instruments and patterns, but I found tricks to make it more usable. Doubling or halving the tempo was quite useful, and although the "drum" portion of it isn't as full-featured as the two main MS-10 tracks, you can be creative and manipulate it in ways to utilize it as a third instrument in addition to rhythm.
In a way, I like these kinds of limitations as it really forces you to think creatively about how to use it.
Edit: If anyone is actually interested in listening to it, here are the 3 tracks I made on vacation. Everything is straight from the DS, except for the audio fade out in one of the songs. Kinda limited with only 16 patterns, so they do get repetitive, but I still like them. Link: soundcloud.com/rarson/sets/ds-10-tracks

Incredible, when one knows that the only instruction to do sound on the Apple II is LDA $C030, which applies a little spike to the speaker (or LDA $C020 for the cassette port).
