9000 was saved from the scrapper's torch. Retired from revenue service in 1956. The locomotive was donated to Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pomona, California for display today.

I can't decide which video I like more, "Roll On, Big Boy," or "Nine Thousand." It's a hard choice!!
I love the musical energy of Big Boy and the different scenes of the countryside, particularly the snow. Images of the crowds around the train add to the energy.
Nine Thousand is different in so many ways from Big Boy. The historical film footage really gives some depth to the viewer, and both the lyrics and Phil Brey's voice give it a lonesome, haunting quality, like the Northern Plains themselves. It's almost as if he's a ghost of one of the train's engineers, singing about its past glories. You kind of expect him to vanish as he's walking away, down the tracks.
I think Nine Thousand has the edge . . .

''Do you recall from yesterdays time? when steam was the king of the road, There was an engine who rolled the UP line, Nine thousand was her name she was her name, She was four and two and she had around the boo (caboose) with one hundred carts to pull up to the hill, but now she’s gone but her memory lingers on, Nine thousand was her name, Mighty drivers roar upon and heard no more from ó Valley she rolled to fame, The diesel won the race but cannot take her place, And they still say at night when the wind is blowing right you can hear the longsome whistle, How could I know I woud miss her so Nine Thousand was her name, And they still say at night when the wind is blowing right you can hear the longsome whistle, How could I know I woud miss her so Nine Thousand was her name, And They still say at night when the wind is blowing right you can hear the longsome whistle.''

This and "Roll on, Big Boy" are my favorite 2 songs of yours, and the timing of footage and music is perfect.
As for the 9000 class, I find it fascinating. The 9000 class 4-12-2s marked the start of Union Pacific's "Horsepower addiction", which would end with the EMD DDA40X of 1969-1971.
The 9000 class would've never existed in the first place without the Union Pacific's unique view of how to run a railroad: one locomotive per train, which the 9000s were designed to do.
While the 9000 class of 4-12-2s were able to haul a 100-car freight train unaided, they unfortunately weren't flawless. The long, rigid wheelbase made it almost impossible to negotiate curves without damaging the track or wheels of the engine, and the 3-cylinder layout made them difficult to maintain.
However, the 9000's flaws would lay the groundwork for Union Pacific's "Challenger" class of simple articulated 4-6-6-4s, which would, in turn, provide the foundation for the larger Big Boys, the articulation of both designs solving the shortcomings of the earlier 9000s.
The 9000 class wouldn't just inspire designs in the U.S, however, as the Soviet AA20 4-14-4 was inspired by the 9000s. While the 9000s were at least able to handle the work given to them, to say the AA20 was a failure would be an understatement, being a poor steamer, overweight, destroying the track it ran on and derailing often. In the end, only a single AA20 would be built, being scrapped in 1960.
While the 9000s were heavy haulers, their long wheelbase and inside middle cylinder meant that they were some of the first UP steam engines to be retired, from 1953-1956.
While most of the 9000s were scrapped, No. 9000, the prototype and first one built, is on Display at the RailGiants Museum, with an air hose hooked up to the whistle, so it can be heard if a visitor pulls the whistle chain.
So, while the 9000 class had flaws which limited their capabilities, it was because of the 9000's shortcomings that the Challengers and Big Boys were created.

Nebraska 66 must have been a state highway. Many trains cut through the Cornhusker State. 9000 must have been one legendary iron horse. Harold Warp Pioneer Village might be a rightful place for showing it off.

9000 and her sisters were the largest engines to make use of the Gresley conjugated valve gear. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, who was the chief mechanical engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway this system used two hinged levers connected to the outer cylinder's valves to operate the inner cylinder's valve.

    Do you recall,
    From yesterday's time?
When steam was the king of the 'road?
There was an engine, that rode the U.P Line,
    Nine thousand was her name...
She was Four, Twelve, and two,
And she had 'round the Blue,
With one hundred cars to pull up to a hill.
Now she is gone, but her memory lingers on,
    Nine thousand was her name...
    (Music)
Mighty driver's roll, and up and heard no more,
And rolled to the valley where she rolled to vain,
The diesel won the race, but cannot take her place,
    Nine thousand was her name...
    (Music)
And they still say at night,
When the wind is blowing right,
You can hear the lonesome whistle from that train...
    How could I know,
That I would miss her so?
    Nine thousand was her name...
And they still say at night,
When the wind is blowing right,
You can hear the lonesome whistle from that train...
    How could I know,
That I would miss her so?
    Nine thousand was her name...
