number 844...good...freaking...lord...I basically grew up with this beauty of a living legend through a little show called Shining time station. But that's not the part that made me fall for her. Imagine if you would, your about...eight, maybe nine, and SUPER into trains. I'm talking wearing an engineer's cap wherever you go, always carrying some wooden toy train, and bouncing up and down like nuts whenever one of your many forms of train media is put on into trains. Your mom stops at the usual crossing on the route to your school....when it happens. For the first, and only time you can remember, the lights of the crossing flash, there classic "DING DING DING DING DING-" sounds off and you hear it. This low, gruff sounding whistle blows. You move up to get a better look as soon the giant black metal beast approaches. Times slows for you. You can make out it's wheels, it's light, and it's number. 8-4-4...then time sped up again as the giant sped away, it's cars behind it as you look on in wonder, knowing no one is gonna believe you....and years later...you find out about that engine, and it's legacy...as the living legend.
You know, a lot of people know about Union Pacific 844, but few know about the OTHER Union Pacific 844. Now, some of you may be like, "Are you feeling alright? There IS no "other" Union Pacific 844!" But there is: An EMD GP30 diesel. In fact, THIS 844 is why the steamer 844 was re-numbered to "8444" for awhile starting in 1962, since the GP30 had the number. (I don't get why UP didn't just SKIP "844" when ordering their GP30s, but that's how it went, so...) So, since most people don't know about the GP30 UP 844, you'd assume it was scrapped, right? Well... No. It's still around, and you can visit it at the Nevada State Railroad Museum Boulder City, in, well... Boulder City, Nevada. The GP30 UP 844 is even still operational! As for now, the steamer 844 is unlikely to go back to 8444, as THAT number is held by an EMD SD70ACe. Another fact about 844: It's kinda a franken-locomotive. Again, you might be confused, as 844 looks just like a normal steamer. Well, the FEF-3 is basically an FEF-1 boiler mounted to an FEF-2 frame and tender. So basically, the FEF-3 is a combo of an FEF-1 and FEF-2, and, in theory, you could cut off the boilers of an FEF-1 and FEF-2, mount the boiler of the FEF-1 onto the FEF-2's frame, and BOOM! You got an FEF-3! UP also used to sometimes allow 844 to help haul Amtrak trains. On February 14th, 1975, 844 hauled the "San Francisco Zephyr" with a pair of Amtrak EMD SDP40Fs (which were diesels infamous for derailing a lot, so... Idk how I feel about that) The steamer 844 also assisted TWO diesel trains when they broke down. One on November 4th, 1996, where it helped a train hauled by Dash 8-40Cs 9111 and 9122, along with SD40-2 3222, which stalled on a grade (Some say the engineer of the freight thought 844 couldn't do it and begged for another diesel, but there's no concrete proof on that) And one on July 8th, 1998, when a lone SD60 broke down. So... The 844 has some fun facts about it that some huge fans don't even know!
@@Nebraska66 You're welcome! I am, too! By the way, you know what'd be devious? If you made a song about the GP30 844 as a prank, and then people would get it confused with the steamer 844. Or about the SD70ACe 8444... Just an idea if you and your dad feel devious someday...

God tier from the first cord
There is a legend that is living
And now it’s part of railroad lore
The last built of all the UP steamers
And known by her number 844
And 844 she is the fastest
Of all the engines on the UP line
A graceful thing of majesty and beauty
Connecting us to other long long times
Just sing your head out of the window
Listen to the lullaby of power
Highballing on the living legend
Over 100 miles an hour
All aboard for an adventure
While turning back the hand of time
Ride again the living legend
And roll on down the UP line
A piece of history we are seeing
That keeps alive the past for all
The ground is trembling as she passes
And breaks into our lonesome calls
She is poetry in motion
She’s the lady we adore
They’ll never be another like her
Roll on, roll on 844
All aboard the living legend
All aboard 844
All aboard the living legend
All aboard
844
Thank you for posting the lyrics!!!
@@Nebraska66 You're very welcome! I really enjoyed this song it's a masterpiece that truly expresses the legend that is UP 844, a wonderful song for a wonderful locomotive. Great work!
🎼🎵🎶🎙🎤
"And 844 she is the fastest" is wrong I think I think it's "at 4 8 & 4 she is the fastest".
It's amazing they never took this locomotive out of service and it's been operating since 1944
just got my own HO scale model of it (Broadway limited with the dcc and sound + smoke for those interested), roll on 844!
Cool!
@@Nebraska66 Thanks! This song is honesty probably cooler than my model tho, so well done!
If making music was like baseball. This scored a home run hands down. It has a low tune that is smooth then it has an epic built up and then a climax that pulls you in. Fantastic work Nebraska 66.
Forgive me for asking this but will you do a song based on Challenger 3985 in future?
We sure appreciate your kind words and support of our music. Thanks for listening! We can’t thank you enough! We have several songs in our “inbox” including a song about the great 3985. Thanks for the suggestion and interest in our future projects.
Cool
Yes! It's here!
