my first guitar way back in 1976 was cheap pawnshop japanese sg knockoff. nothing like an sg really it had a layered plywood neck and japanese gold foil pickups. Tony Iommi was and is one of my favorite guitarists. Always wanted a real SG. That one you show is particularly nice.
Tip for Gibson neck dive: Use a wide strap. Not the narrow Levy's or other brand ones. Go for 3'' or wider and a leather type material that will grab onto your shirt better. Will fix Gibsons that neck dive more than you'd think.
Okay Collin, are you a Zappa fan? You played the opening riff to Muffin Man at the beginning of this vid and I had to stop it right there and thought, "I knew there was a reason I like this guy and his channel"! I wait for your Friday videos, keep on doing what you are doing. ...and RIP Frank Zappa.
Thanks for the video! Yes 3 guitars Id never sell are my 73 sg walnut, 74 tele deluxe mocha and my 72 lp custom ebony-gold at 11.6 pounds😂 Love that SG....
Love the SG, not long ago bought the Epiphone 61 Vibrola, just awesome, not a Gibson but it has the vibe and look, just couldnt stretch to the Gibson version....yet :) Great guitar and playing Colin, incidentally I am sure I read on a Gibson site that if you always ensure at least 5 turns of string on the posts it helps the break out angle of the string and aids tuning stability. This really works as kept getting a dull G on my LP sorted the turns and never an issue again. I now ensure I do it on all my guitars and ones i set up for others.
My brother owned a music store in the '70s in Tallahassee, Florida, and as soon as you came into the store, you had a 20% discount on Gibson and Fender and a bunch of other brands. We were glad to have the sale and the profit.
Collin, have you ever considered reviewing a Maybach Albatroz (it's Maybach's take on the SG)? Love your videos, there's something soothing about the wise man talking about guitars to this youngster
I’ve listened and watched many of your guitar vids and comparisons. I appreciate that you concentrate on the workingman’s with the occasional foray into something fancier. This guitar sounded the best.
Gorgeous example there, nice dark rosewood board, no neck dive, THAT is a keeper. I’ve had many guitars, but never an SG, I just don’t like the way they sit on my body playing in standing position, it feels like that 1st-position fretboard area is two miles away from my body. My arm’s all extended playing anything at the nut. Hate where the toggle switch and volume/tone controls are too, makes on the fly adjustment hard (annoying) for me.
Guitar Center in the USA had a sale on the Gibson Les Paul Classic. Just got a red one for $1699. There are definitely deals out there. Go to your local shops.
By the way, I love the neck dive test! I always choose your channel when looking up some SG reviews, cause you've got the best ones! The neck dive issue is usually the very first thing that comes to my mind with every SG. Please, include this "neck dive" segment in every future SG review! Honestly, to me, as a potential buyer, this is the deal breaker! I had so many great SG guitars in my hands, I loved playing while sitting, but when I stood up with that damn thing, I had to put them away, cause I can't stand neck dive.. And at this price range, I wouldn't really bother to mess up with the guitar to balance it with some special weights, straps or redrills of strap locks. So good job on that! Keep going on!
Hooray! Another SG! However I really don’t like the satin finishes, the USA Greeny Les Paul was afflicted with that too. Also not a fan of the no covers. Having said that, 5 minutes with a soldering iron and some elbow grease to shine it up a bit and that is a good deal. Nice knobs btw
As a Strat first guy, that is one VERY COOL rock machine. You are flying a flag for them that I am glad to bow to. I agree on the Epi line price. Almost room for a squire-type line below what they are trying to do??
I think they (Epiphone) got a bit too big for their boots... we really liked them because of what they offered at that low price point but when you get to north of £800 / $1000 there's a lot of competition... including heavily discounted Gibsons! 😂👍
Great video. I bought one of the AMS exclusive Gibson SG dark cherry 61 standards with gold hardware. I have been gasing over one with a vibrola. I really just like that chrome plate on the bottom. it's like chrome on a Harley.
I know I say the same thing every week but it's always true, another great Friday breakfast of coffee and waffling, just don't know what I like more the sweet SG or how you make it sound
Hello Colin, nice video, my original 63 SG Special has Witch Hats and they have grub screws (rusty) my Flying V is the same so I think new Witch Hats are probably all now push on, that's why they feel a bit loose.
Colin, as always another great video. I am considering adding a Gibson SG to my collection in the coming months, so asking the oracle here - what's your favourite SG that you always find yourself picking up and playing ?
I’m really impressed with this guitar. Finally got to play one and will definitely be purchasing as my first SG! And my first Gibson! I typically play an Eastman T486 (335 style) but I love how light and nimble SGs are. Thanks for a great hour as always
I agree with you about pricing who has got £2k to spend on an SG in these straightened times other than TH-camrs! I look forward to seeing you compare the Gibson with the white Epi 61 you have Colin. I like the Zappa mods however I prefer the look of covered PUPs. I think that metal tremolo systems adds something to the tone. As a slight aside I would love to hear your views on TH-camrs having Signature guitar models as I note Beto and Schawrz now have their own signature models. Can we expect a Guitaristas release any time soon? My personal view is I wouldn't consider paying the premium even if it had a rock stars signature on it! The secret to buying any guitar is buy second hand because in most cases the original buyer who paid top price purchasing new, will be the one taking the depreciation hit.
Guitaristas is spot on with the neck dive piece. I own a 2017 ‘61 reissue with the Grover locking tuners (no tailpiece/vibrato on mine). 61s have a narrower/lighter body than a Standard SG and the 61s are prone to neck dive. Does the headstock fall to my feet soon as I stand, no, but it is generally out of balance due to the build and lightweight body. I do most of my playing in a chair/recliner and the 61 SG requires more neck support than other axes. I’d like to add a tailpiece for some added balance but overall I love the guitar for lots of reasons. If I played live, strap material (e.g., suede) or tailpiece can be enough to help protect against neck dive. Look no further than Derek Trucks who says he picks the lightest SG he can find.
I have an sg, not one of those expensive ones obviously, but the one with only 2 knobs and in red. It’s a great thing. If only i was good at playing it tho
The Zappa Roxy my dream guitar as well, my go-to guitar my SG 2008 Standard Vintage Cherry, I changed the tuners for Kluson Locking Revolution Series tuners, and their sound. They are a straight swap, and there's no neck dive whatsoever.

Hi Colin, my mate Ian had a 61’ Les Paul with the same vibrola not the side winder version. He used it on the Milk n Cookies album in 74’, and he worked a Gracins Music on Long Island where he bought it in 1969 or 70 thats when we started the band and is how I remember it but it was the talk of the town among guitarists and the same when we moved to London working with Muff Winwood and Island records. sweet guitar brother! i might just have to re-visit the muzik store and give an sg another go! got lucky a few years ago when i just about nailed the angus young tone with a squier affinity strat with a guitarfetish "crunchy pat" humbucker in the bridge! chances of it ever happening again without an actual sg would be almost impossible...even with another thin affy squier strat platform... so if i want to get the "angus vibe" i best start with an sg hey!
My next guitar! I have the ‘50’s Faded Les Paul and it is AWESOME!!! I got it, set it up and it is the BEST LP I have ever owned! Can’t wait to get this SG.
After 18 months without buying any guitars, today I gave way and ordered a Squier Strat 40th anniversary. I found one for under 300 €. Wouldn’t say I‘m a guitar addict, but even before getting it I feel better than yesterday.
Great guitar! I wish they were available in lefty. After your recent tokai video I was inspired. So I have a vintage series lefty tokai SG on the way. It's based on 61 Gibson SG specs, so that'll probably do for me.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the money to buy a new guitar whenever I want.
Thumbnails matter. We get it. You play the game without playing yourself. That's key. Similar to why your reviews are some of my favorites, especially in the world of Gibsons. You've got a real love of these guitars but it never overrides your authentic opinion. One of these days I'll get my own SG, and you can bet I'll be binging your videos to help my research.
My bro has a 83 les paul . And it’s nice. But the one you’re playing here, and my recently acquired SG Special. The Gibson SG guitars have incredible natural harmonic tones that ring behind ones playing. It’s awesome.
One way I test that neck diving balance of my instruments is to V shaped length of wood, or a stout wooden ruler set on edge, with a cloth of top of them, have them on a table, and lay the instrument horizontally with its strings up, and find the balance point by resting the back of the body on the balancing stick, and moving the instrument back and forth until it's, well, balanced. This allows one to take measurements of how far the balance point is from the tip of the headstock to the tail of the instrument. Which then can give rather precise data on the differences between, say, heavier and lighter bridges, tuners, etc. It would be interesting to see what variance there is between your SG guitars, both compared to themselves and to Les Pauls, 335s, etc. Or even the differences between, say, Gibson and Epiphone makes of the same models. Carry on, ever forward! edit: Actually, your neck stand looks like it would serve the purpose as something to balance a guitar on!
7 months old video Dave.... ANYways, wanted to mention the BB pickups use AlNiCo 2, while the '61 pickups use AlNiCo 5, so even though the their readings were similar they are different, there are other differences too about how they're wound. I like both types, the '61s are more aggressive perhaps? As for neck dive, having a tremolo to balance the guitar (like yours has) is a good idea on SG models. Mine is slightly neck heavy and didn't come with a tremolo, so I bought a Bigsby to put on it to balance the guitar, which looks cool and wiggles!
Another thoroughly enjoyable video. I’ve got an SG with grovers and it doesn’t “neck dive” either ( although the klusons look better I think🤪). It’s a great guitar to play when standing up👍
Good timing, Colin! Today my brand new Gibson Les Paul Special in TV Yellow came! I got it from Musicians Friend out the door including Kalifornistan state tax out the door $1,659 usually $1,799 + tax. The thing is MAGICAL!!! The Gibson smell, the fat 50’s neck, and the wood grain bleeding through that sublime nitro. Unbeatable. The minute you open it, you realize why the Gibson is three times or four times the Epiphone but soooo worth it! There is an anticipation and excitement about a Gibson you can’t get from an Epiphone. For me, a guitar is more than sound, it’s feel and style, smell, and legacy. The Epiphones can be excellent quality, but they have those flatter thin necks that guys like me just hurt from playing. The TV Yellow Gibson vs the Mustard Epiphone are worlds apart just like my heritage cherry Gibson SG is a parsec away from the striped red Epiphone wood. Both companies have their strengths. I’m sure I’ll get another Epiphone someday, but I’m in a Gibson state of mind, I can’t deny…
Be VERY careful when you try to spread the split volume shafts. One of mine snapped off without warning when I tried this. Better to wrap a bit of plumbing tape around the shaft.
I never understood the neck dive theory. I’ve had plenty of SG‘s and some dove and some didn’t, but when you’re playing it how often do you play a guitar without your hands on the neck. It’s not really a problem, it’s just something to give people more reason to bitch about something. I love Les Paul’s, and I love SG‘s. Collin, you do you. Whatever makes this channel grow is what we want also! I love watching your videos and hope to continue to for a very long time! Great video as always, Collin! Can’t wait for next week!

Really nice sounding guitar, really nice. liked your playing
I have an SG Tribute. Putting witch hats on it totally changed the look.
Oh yeah! 😎🙌
Thanks for the video! Yes 3 guitars Id never sell are my 73 sg walnut, 74 tele deluxe mocha and my 72 lp custom ebony-gold at 11.6 pounds😂
Love that SG....
@@BlueberryStinkFinger62 Thank you its a great instrument
My brother owned a music store in the '70s in Tallahassee, Florida, and as soon as you came into the store, you had a 20% discount on Gibson and Fender and a bunch of other brands. We were glad to have the sale and the profit.
Hi Colin, The minor mods you made look great. I love the way you levitated slightly off the ground in your final jam 😂
😆👍
Collin, have you ever considered reviewing a Maybach Albatroz (it's Maybach's take on the SG)? Love your videos, there's something soothing about the wise man talking about guitars to this youngster
Don’t Johnny depp play maybach guitars ?
Yes... totally on my radar!
hes plays Duesenberg afaik @@craigpimlott204
@@craigpimlott204 yeah and Duesenberg as well I think?
I’ve listened and watched many of your guitar vids and comparisons. I appreciate that you concentrate on the workingman’s with the occasional foray into something fancier. This guitar sounded the best.
I’ve never been a fan of SG’s (and I can’t honestly say why) but you’re the only person who makes me wanna go give them another go
I love SG's more than I do Les Pauls. Neck dive is usually caused by heavy aftermarket tuners in my experience.
Too funny. I just bought an SG last night and boom a few hours later you drop a video on an SG.
😁👍 Nice one!
Great to see you hit the jackpot with this one! 😀
My personal favourite is the junior but any SG will do me! 😆👍
We all love a good box
Matron
Ace looking SG
Sounds ace too.
Great video Colin. Great.
Absolutely beautiful guitar with your updates added. Nicely done!
I’m really impressed with this guitar. Finally got to play one and will definitely be purchasing as my first SG! And my first Gibson! I typically play an Eastman T486 (335 style) but I love how light and nimble SGs are. Thanks for a great hour as always
I love the honesty. Please dont exchange it with money through your TH-cam journey. Many have done it, we dont need more
I'm an SG lover since the 70s. This was great! Thank you!
I’ve got the same illness it’s the love of all guitars . Have not bought any Gibson but I’m still looking for them used
Bloody lovely guitar which sounds amazing and a bargain as well, great review and playing on the episode 🎸😄
Just ordered my first SG. 61 with stop tail. I can't wait to receive it. Thanks for the great content.
The SG's are my favorite too. I do still want a goldtop someday, but I could play my SG for the rest of my life and have no complaints.
I'm one of your new subscribers, there I was a 72 year old acoustic player quite happy playing pre-war country blues with some proficiency then the algorythm (sp) throws up your channel and I'm hooked! Went out and bought an Epiphone LP 50s standard after watching your reviews, keep doing what you do it's great! Croc cam brilliant😂
Excellent! 🤣👍 glad you found us man thanks for supporting! 🙏
great video...great work... great job... great playing.... amazing
Loop station awesome! One of the best piece of gear to own. Makes us better guitar players able to improvise soloing over riffs.
Nice one, Colin! Killer looks and tones. And I love the Maestro Vibrola.
Your guitar does sound nice. Frank would approve I think !!! Well done.
I bought the Sg standard 61 vintage cherry and having gone through many reviews and stuff I can say this is by far the best one I have come across.
Cheers that's appreciated! 😁👍
Yes best guitar shape ever designed.
Cheers
Thanks for saying about high gain its well over sold on here clean and natural break up cannot beat it pedalless cheers.
I love this channel. I’ve watched every episode and I consistently laugh when you say you’ll never be a wealthy man…. Two new Gibsons and your new Tokai in the last few weeks… not bad 😂 Good on you Colin!
sweet guitar brother!
i might just have to re-visit the muzik store and give an sg another go!
got lucky a few years ago when i just about nailed the angus young tone with a squier affinity strat with a guitarfetish "crunchy pat" humbucker in the bridge!
chances of it ever happening again without an actual sg would be almost impossible...even with another thin affy squier strat platform...
so if i want to get the "angus vibe" i best start with an sg hey!
My next guitar! I have the ‘50’s Faded Les Paul and it is AWESOME!!! I got it, set it up and it is the BEST LP I have ever owned! Can’t wait to get this SG.
As soon as I sell one of my guitars in tempted to get one of these.
Perhaps FV is faded vintage.
I would have associated AY with Angus Young but it's obviously not that.
Fantastic looking guitar!
After 18 months without buying any guitars, today I gave way and ordered a Squier Strat 40th anniversary. I found one for under 300 €. Wouldn’t say I‘m a guitar addict, but even before getting it I feel better than yesterday.
You must have been miserable for the last year or so without even realising! 🤣👍
Great guitar! I wish they were available in lefty. After your recent tokai video I was inspired. So I have a vintage series lefty tokai SG on the way. It's based on 61 Gibson SG specs, so that'll probably do for me.
As an avid viewer,I often grin @ some of your comments and even a chuckle. With that, I've gotta say,the first 2 1/2 minutes had me rolling.😂
Love your channel and your candor. The G.A.S. is strong @ 25% off! Absolutely!🤘🏻🤘🏻
I have to say that sg is the best sounding guitar I have heard in a long time! Purely objective of course, but wow!
FAB VID COL, I GOT AN SG SPECIAL WITH FIRE BIRD PICK UPS, SHE WAILS MT, SO LIGHT, AND GREAT AT THE DUSTY END M.
Love your videos Colin👍. You put me on to the Epi P90 special, comes next week. Just hope nobody has put a screwdriver to it! 🤞 20:29
Love the channel. Can you review the Epiphone Jared James Nichols gold glory Les Paul???
I haven’t even watched the video yet, but the title alone is a winner
Another thoroughly enjoyable video. I’ve got an SG with grovers and it doesn’t “neck dive” either ( although the klusons look better I think🤪). It’s a great guitar to play when standing up👍
Good timing, Colin! Today my brand new Gibson Les Paul
Special in TV Yellow came!
Nice one!! 😁👍
Be VERY careful when you try to spread the split volume shafts. One of mine snapped off without warning when I tried this. Better to wrap a bit of plumbing tape around the shaft.
Another great instalment video A finer instrument than my Epiphone SG pro custom. . One day....
"It was 25% off" and other excuses 😂. I've run out of excuses and I need more guitars. What are your best excuses? HELP!
Cheers Rob! 😁👍
That’s a beautiful SG Colin, an absolute killer! A little Australian guy called Angus very first SG had a Vibrola, I think you’re well on the way to having more in your collection than him. 😂 Great video as always mate and have a great weekend! 🤘
Angus has Scottish roots, he was born in Glasgow.
@@gernotboesser6901Isn’t he married to a Dutch woman? I know he owns a house in the Netherlands close to where my parents live.
@@nieko3038 This I don't know mate.
@@gernotboesser6901 I know! However at 7 years old he went to Oz and the 3 years he can probably remember of Glasgow, with respect won’t count for much. A bit like calling someone your father because of a chemical reaction, when you’ve never seen each other.
@@carlosdeno He is of scottish parents, he has spend his first years on earth in Scottland, his genetic footprint is scottish. An australian passport does not say anything at all.
Congratulations for getting something you really wanted at a good price. It looks pretty nice. For an SG. Kidding. Thanks as always.
Got to agree with you. I have a beautiful 335 and cool old Les Paul, but the SG is the one I use most
Well ham and cheese with lemonade, here we go again. I still plan on watching all of these before Christmas 🎄 no matter which account I’m on . Great playing and so chill.
Cheers man! 😆👍
Good Friday morning, Colin! Another entertaining Vid, and great playin, but nobody wants to see a 62 year old box 😂 Maybe a 22 year olds box would be better clickbait!
Or the New Knobs…
You talked me into a heavily discounted ‘61 Epi SG/LP which is flawless, and became one of my Favs. RIP Frank.
Have a big ole’ weekend, Brother
