    Hey man, I'd like to thank you for making this short, but very simple, comprehensible and well explained video!
    Currently, I'm pulling a nighter (lol) in creating a presentation about Descartes' philosophy about the self which I believe centralizes on the Cogito argument. Hope you're doing well and you take care now!

    You can also be bsolutly certain about subjective experience as such. For example, you can't be absolutly certain that a glass you're seeng (or feeling) is actually there, but you can be absolutly certain that you're having the corresponding experience.

    Enjoyed your explanation. I think what happened is Descartes was following ancient empirical teachings from the time of Plato and the Greeks. You prove your hypothesis one fact after another. So science must be based on the search for truth and the foundational building blocks of accepted methodology. You start off with something you know is a fact, "Cogito, ergo sum," and build from there. Often, a discussion that starts with a fact may transform into something else when new facts are discovered in the discussion. So your position has to have a certain amount of fluidity.

    Great explanation. Just a curious question. How about animals? Since they are not necessarily thinking but acting on instinct, does he mean that such beings don't necessarily exists?

    • @PhilosopherGames
      @PhilosopherGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      The argument doesn't imply that if you do not think, then you do not exist. Rather, if you can think, you can know that you exist. Note, this does not extend to knowing other humans even exist; the cogito argument only applies to knowing your own existence as a thinking thing.
      I hope this helps to clarify things!

    • @JustSomeRandomIdiot
      @JustSomeRandomIdiot ปีที่แล้ว

      > How about animals? Since they are not necessarily thinking but acting on instinct, does he mean that such beings don't necessarily exists?
      What makes you so convinced that animals don't think? They have brains just like us, their brains are active and fire neurons as they observe the world around them, and process information collected through often eyes and ears just like us. They attempt to communicate with mouths.
      Humans are as much animals as anything else. We assume. Based on our observations. That is assuming animals exist. Maybe they don't. Maybe I don't know. Maybe this is all a dream and you're reading this youtube comment in your sleep. Perhaps your a brain in a jar being fed a simulated boring existence to keep you calm.
      I think the point of I think, therefore I am, is not that all humans therefore exist because we think, but we ourselves personally exist, any other lifeform beyond ourselves personally is in doubt. I exist, because I know I think, I know I think because I'm thinking about thinking. You might exist but I can't know for sure. Likewise you can't know if I'm thinking or not by observing me, so for you, I might not exist.

    • @Andrew-dg7qm
      @Andrew-dg7qm 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The more we think, the less we exist. Don’t be afraid of being. It’s painful for the ego, but it’s the ego that holds us back.
      Animals are great teachers. They have no ego. They simply are. They don’t have to suffer.
      They don’t judge or get angry when their mother gets eaten by a crocodile. They grieve. They don’t judge.
      And because they can be, they can be wise.

    What if our own capacity for reasoning is corrupted or controlled by some external factor for it to seem like they add up or be reasonable or accurate wherein, perhaps, they don't? Wouldn't that render any possible reasoning we can imagine false, including this famous phrase?
    Edit: This question may seem to have an obvious answer to a few people, but the proof for "1 + 1 = 2" famously took about 300 pages, after all.

    • @paddycakes6244
      @paddycakes6244 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, but the only point of this philosophical phrase is to point out to yourself the only thing you can know is that you exist as a thinking *thing* The form of this thing, the where, the when, the how, what external force may or may not be acting upon this consciousness of the *thinking thing* that is *you* all of these things are not only unknown, but unknowable. It is literally impossible for *you* to ever know any of these things, ever, the only thing *you* can know is that *you* exist as a thinking thing, because you are thinking. There is literally no possible proof for anything, except for *you* to know that *you* exist, because the only proof needed is that *you* exist by thinking about yourself. You have to exist to be able to doubt your existence.

      @Andrew-dg7qm it's been a while, and I'm not high enough for this lol, but I'll attempt my two cents:
      If the logic "I think, therefore I am" is sufficient evidence of your existence, then you are literally saying thought (the "I think") is your conscious existence. Which means a thought counts as existence.
      Granted, it does not identify WHAT you are, whether the thought of a demon or a physical entity. By having thought and identifying existence, whether you are a physical being or a thought of another creature or a program living a simulation, still means you exist. Identifying what you are is not the purpose of"I think, therefore I am", it is to identify that you exist, and the first step of a logical process to figure out who (or what) you are.

Your parents came from other rational thinking beings and so on and so forth. We have never observed a rational thinking being coming into existence on its own, without proceeding from another intelligent being. Therefore, by acknowledging these empirical observations, we can conclude the human race proceeded from a higher intelligence than us. That would be the first step. Perhaps study and look into the 5 proofs by Thomas Aquinas, who is one of the most brilliant philosophers of the middle ages.

    • @Castropher

      It seems that Descartes put forth a philosophy that essentially denies the existence of God, because he chooses to doubt the existence everything outside of himself, and only believes in his own existence. Descartes then goes on to echo what was said by God in Exodus and Christ in the gospel... "I AM". Whether or not Descartes intended this or not, he has elevated himself and all who hold firm to this philosophy to the status of God by saying "I AM" while doubting the existence of all reality and divinely inspired Truths.

    • @penmaster003
      @penmaster003 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Castropher It doesn’t deny the existence of God at all. If you think, then you exist. That doesn’t explain how you came to exist. The fact that you do exist means you cannot doubt you came from somewhere. That somewhere is from a rational being who also thinks and therefore exists, God.
