  • It is a tremendous honor to receive the Gold Prize - World Rank 2 of the IAPLC, International Aquatic Plant Layout Contest in its 20th Anniversary Year. This video is the first of a series of 3, covering my aquascape - “Undying”, and the mysterious “puddles”, reflections found at the bottom of the aquarium. Congratulations to the 2385 entries to the contest- and find the top 127 winning works below on the recording of the presentation livestream on the ADA TH-cam Channel:

    Its great to know how the conceptualisation process evolves, I like the way you have taken the abstract approach to another level. The best part about this is...the scape seems to be very simple and many people I have shown this tank take it for a shear luck, aquascaper had the best pieces of wood available hence he was able to pull it off. But many dont realize the amount of hard work and expertise it takes to compose a design with a couple big elements of hardscape with a minimalist approach. And the detail around it(reflection being my favourite bit) works so well around the abstract theme.
    My favorite scape this year in IAPLC.period.
    I was anticipating this video and looking forward to the construction video as well.

    • @SteveScapesYT
      @SteveScapesYT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you hamza! If you have the opportunity, please tell your friends that this is not a single piece of hardscape, but a framework made of countless pieces of material. Next vid I will show how I actually drew lines on the tank, and filled the wood to match them exactly- no matter what shape I wanted to make, I could and would make it. This is why this idea phase, the “what” phase is so important. We’re not limited at all as to the shapes that are “possible” to make from a technical view point, so “what to make” is the really important question.

    What do you guys do with the material after the competition? I'm sure the wood and rocks are ruined with glue, screws, etc. Do you guys just toss them?

    • @SteveScapesYT
      @SteveScapesYT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course not! Definitely not ruined. A simple pair of pliers and a file take off the hardest to remove stuff. Materials NEVER die, so don’t be afraid to invest!

    • @SteveScapesYT
      @SteveScapesYT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If takes a lot more time and effort to edit it, and for me to be happy with presenting it. Being a scape so worked on for a whole year- please understand that how it’s presented in public is something that takes more care to me. An IAPLC photo, just this one shot has hours of work put into shooting it and editing it. If I’m going to show film, it can only be after finding time to put effort appropriate to it. This is part of the reason so few top scapes have videos made by the scaper themselves. The examples I know that exist- aren’t guys that have 2 little kids at home... 😅 May sound like excuses, but this is my reality. Putting it forth will take like 5-10 hours of work for me to happy- and it’s just not in my schedule.

    This is for me a bad last year Fukada copy. Aquascaping every year is going more abstract and not real. Diorama, mirrors, plastic. Next years will be only construction with two patches of moss.

    • @SteveScapesYT
      @SteveScapesYT  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also like the classic style and aquascapes more faithful to nature- my layout last year was praised by ADA as the best for faithful recreation of a natural riverway. Please check out my vids about it! 🥰 Unfortunately as someone who is aiming at the top ranks as a goal, I have to consider that my layout last year dropped me from Rank 5 to Rank 15, and adjust accordingly 😅😢

    • @graykardinal2930
      @graykardinal2930 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      this is a problem for judges. Every year the craziest idea is awarded. The balance in the aquarium is no longer looked at at all. Sunrises, sunsets, side taillights. Everything is already a game of technique. seeing such an aquarium, fish and plants seem to me the most superfluous, which is absurd for an aquarium.

      Thank you! Sorry to disappoint man-- also welcome to my channel! Considering how much of my time and energy is devoted to aquascaping itself, and that I have a full time job and 2 small kids; the long time viewers of the channel know my situation (which I'm very up-front with) and know that this is how it always was and how it likely always will be in terms of quality. I got no time for writing scripts and improving production. Still, I think this channel is completely unique in terms of what it offers an interested audience; and anyone else with the knowledge to make a channel like this will be under the same kind of restrictions I have-- or are retiring. I appreciate your understanding!
