I firmly belief that when telling off (and explain why) and non-physical punishment doesn't work that a smack is deserved. I've been smacked 4 times in my 18 years and all came after initial warnings and telling off. And all 4 times I deserved it and never did it again. And not because of the pain, but the sheer shock that my parents had to result to this! Now outside in the 80s it was really normal that some adult would smack (or even beat up) kids when we, according to them, misbehaved. I've had my fare share of kicks, smacks, or even the odd punch by some adult. That I always found very awkward.
The comparison of Britain with Sweden was very interesting. Sweden's decision to allow huge numbers of so-called asylum seekers to enter the country has proved disastrous. Similarly, banning smacking was also foolish. Smacking should be among the options for disciplining children. It is quick and very effective. I suspect that the boy who stole candy and was made to work for two weeks as punishment would have preferred a good spanking to his very prolonged punishment which was way over the top.

And one day I was pulled out of the queue on the English side and they asked me stupid questions as I were to stay unregistered in the UK. I told them: "I am a Dutchmen that's a skilled worker, so why would I want to to stay here? And if I did I would be no burden on your well fare system, unlike those Africans landing on the beach 3 miles from the road here!" Those scumbag custom nazis even had the audacity to ask if I was racist and that they didn't take kindly to such a racist comment. Sure enough just outside of Dover two little rubber boats with a dozen guys each stormed the beach -- without covid paper checks that I even had to do! England is so screwed!
