    I wrote this soon after Jim passed away in 2010:
    Three Stories of Jim Marshall :
    I met Jim through my late friend Dany Walker around 1979. Dany’s father, George, was one of Jim’s criminal attorneys and handled his weapon assault and drug charges. When Jim did his work-furlough program for photographer Dennis Grey, (assist during the day and in jail at night) Dany moved into Jim’s Union Street apartment. This was probably around 1980 or so. I would hang around there a lot and there were lots of parties. It was above the Food Art Store and faced right onto busy Union street. There were these steel filing cabinets in the kitchen all full of Jim’s negatives. I mean ALL of them. We used to rummage through looking at them. It’s so cool nobody took them. They sat there for a couple of years.
    I remember once way back in the late 80s when I was going to New York to show portfolios, Jim asked me if would take his work and show it around. I told him that I would represent him in a minute, if he were dead. If you knew Jim, you would understand my reply. He told me to fuck off a few times and then gave me a print. A few months later he photographed me and my friends at my birthday party. I never saw those images
    .
    About seven or eight years ago I was sitting at the bar at the Sunset Marquis Hotel in LA. There were about ten or more of Jim’s photographs framed on the walls. I started talking to the bartender about Jim. The bartender told me that he had been banned from the Hotel for throwing a chair through the window. Literally ten minutes later we hear this really load voice yell out from the doorway across the room; “WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING HERE MASLOV.” Sure enough it was Jim. Returning to the scene of the crime
    .
    Last July I ran into Jim at at Lulu’s in San Francisco. I took a picture with my iPhone after he bought me a Martini (he frequently bought everyone drinks) . I would always run into him in bars. Many many many times.

    The old Fu’s Tattoos location here where I got most of my work did an entire back piece of that Johnny Cash middle finger photo for someone.

      Just ordered Show Me The Picture which Barnes And Noble promises with be a sealed copy.Last week at City Lights they had the new book on Harry Smith which may prove to be a lot of reading for me but it does have some good photographs of Harry in his much younger days. Still making no progress on the picture of Ralph Gleason and Bill Graham no one is particularly helpful You’re videos from Vancouver were really good!

    Thanks for your generosity here, Norman. My kid brother was a protege of Jim's, and got to know him pretty well. He, too, regretted not keeping prints Jim had given him. (I still have one.) In my signed copy of "Not Fade Away'" he wrote "This is the shit." Tom always had two Leicas hanging around his neck, but if someone took a picture of him, he'd give 'em the finger. He got that from Jim.

    the monk, coltrane, bill evans and allman brothers photos alone make the man worthy of probation for drug and gun charges. i can't believe that coltrane has been gone since 67 or that duane's been gone since 71. those dylan photos from 64 are magnificent. i've seen them a thousand times but love them. i've never seen his photo of lennon from 1966 and you have it framed. wonderful! thank you.

    Thanks for yet another excellent video, I saw the documentary earlier in the year on Sky Arts TV here in England and have watched it a few times since, brilliant and compelling, came across it by accident after watching a couple of other photography documentaries (McCullin, Martin Parr, Finding Vivian Maier, The Man Who Shot New York). To be honest I'd never heard of Jim Marshall so obviously had to checked out his books but as prices are fairly high I'm still looking out for bargains. Music and photography, can't go wrong, its just deciding what's more important to buy.

    Watched it last night, fantastic! Only wish it was longer. Obviously the GOAT of rock music photography, but I don't really agree with the praise for the Miles Davis photos. Not that they're not great photos, but I almost consider them to be 'staged'- Miles was jealous and wanted Jim to make him look as cool as Coltrane, so he basically posed for them. They just don't feel as authentic knowing the back story.

  • @z3232
    @z3232 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for most of the insight into a very talented photographer. Your personal encounters with Jim really helped flesh out his character. I wasn't aware that many of the images of his you showed were in fact taken by him. I'm guilty very frequently of seeing great things and not taking the time to attribute it to the creator. I appreciate you bringing it all to our attention. This was one of your better videos. I've seen most of them. What I'm not particularly grateful for is your choice of a word you used twice, at least, in describing him. Specifically "damaged".... wow now that is a judgement and frankly not very clear. Damaged means less valuable or useful. I might agree that he was damaged to perfection in the sense that his best works makes Richard Avedon look like a F...ing C...ing. d bag. Yea I know they are totally different except they are both trying to capture "something" one of them was posing the other was doing. I'll take that doing rather than those that pose. It's those damaged F.C er's that bring light to this world. You know that because you knew he was kind. To label those "damaged" while trying to cite "perfection" will bring you to a very dark corner. I've known a lot of people in my life that you'd called damaged. Imperfect, you bet, and many other adjectives. In the end valuable and useful. Keep up the good work.

    • @mazzysmusic
      @mazzysmusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah maybe not damaged but flawed. As most of us are. But whatever it was is mostly worked for Jim.
