This was not just a great superhero movie it was a great movie period.
I loved this as a Cap movie, as an MCU movie, and as a political thriller movie. It's truly a great movie and one of the all time best.
This is still my favorite marvel movie. The Hydra reveal was mind blowing for me. I had no comic knowledge or background going into any comic movies. Awesome movie! Still love watching this one.
As good as the Hydra reveal was in this movie, it was done EVEN BETTER in Agents of Shield which at this time was interlinked with the events happening in the movies.
That later stopped. (Long story about Kevin Fiege and Jeff Loeb feud)

I love the story Nick Fury tells about his grandfather in that elevator scene. It's great because it sounds like a story that could come from any African-American. Up until that point, it is easy to think of Fury as some kind of untouchable god of espionage. They remind you that Fury is just a normal guy with that elevator story just before putting him in danger in that amazing car chase sequence.
You're correct Bucky is also a super soldier it's not just the metal arm he couldn't take on Cap with just that also he wouldn't be able to survive being frozen without having the super soldier serum
This one of the best non avenger movies 🍿 I also like that this movie it was a lot about Natasha and Steve, it’s a nod to the comics.
Honestly they had more chemistry to me than peggy and steve lol

He really is. Personally I think his character had the best written journey in the whole franchise. Joe Johnston and the Russo brothers really knew how to present him. Joss Whedon, with his quippy writing style seemed a poor fit, which shows in how dull they made Cap in Avengers 1 and as as the butt of a joke in Avengers 2.
Captain America in the MCU shows how a boyscout type character is stll possibe in this era of "grey" characters. Cap clearly has a strong moral campass that he sticks to.

You’re so right, in terms of character franchises Cap’s are the shit. They really set the standard for so many things.
When Bucky was first rescued by Captain America, with his whole unit, in the first movie, he was about to be experimented on by the Hydra scientists. If you remember, when Steve Rogers was given the super soldier serum in the lab, and the hydra spy tried to steal the vial.. Hydra was trying to obtain the successful American drug, as their own attempts at replicating had been unsuccessful, to some extent.
Red Skull was one of the men who tested some of the earlier the Hydra serums, as we all know how that turned out. Strength, speed, but serious physical defects. When Bucky fell from the train, Hydra was able to recover him and complete their experiment.... not quite the same serum as Stark's, but it was almost there. From there they replaced his arm (probably damaged in the fall) and added some top level brainwashing.
The “Old lady” who turns out to be Black widow…. That actress (original one not Scarlett) is the nurse from American Werewolf in London.
Bucky and Steve are my favorites in MCU 💙🖤

MAJORRRR YES you are so mfing sharp!! I was waiting for this one to come, this is when the MCU pops off. I feel like this is largely considered one of if not the best MCU movies. You are one of the few people I’ve ever seen recognize Bucky from that shot in Alexander Pierce’s house and that’s when I started to think it was him, too 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 the eyes are the clue, so distinctive. He is legitimately in my top 3 characters of the MCU, his story is so crazy. And this movie really put Cap up in my favorites too, I love what they did with his character.

Yes, when Bucky was captured with the rest of his division back in Captain America: The First Avenger, Zola started experimenting on him. Those experiments are what allowed Bucky to survive falling from the train (although he did lose an arm).
After HYDRA recaptured Bucky and brainwashed him, Zola completed the process which made Bucky into a full-blown super-soldier similar to Cap (his version of the serum was probably reverse-engineered from the Red Skull's blood)
Any, this movie is easily one of the MCU's best. The Russos took it to another level.
If you're interested at all in director's commentaries, the commentary the Russos (the directors) and Markus & McFeely (the writers) for this movie is one of my all time favourite commentaries.

The original Captain America character was created during the Golden Age of comic books to convince America to join the war on the side of the Allies. It should be noted that at the time, there were prominent Americans like Charles Lindbergh who wanted to join the Axis.
The original incarnation of the character was pure propaganda and did not pretend to be anything else. This phase of the comic book was represented by the war bonds segment of the first movie.
After WW2, interest in the character dropped off and they stopped publishing it.
During the Vietnam War, there were passionate debates about whether the war was a good idea at all. Many of those arguing for the war invoked patriotism, but were making arguments that violated American values about freedom, the proper role of the state, and so on.
It was during this time that Marvel did the "frozen in ice" story and brought Captain America back. He was brought back because he could deliver messages to jingoists that they would not accept from anyone else. So Cap stood in his star-spangled costume and explained why some of the pro-war arguments of the time were unpatriotic.
This has been the function of Captain America ever since.
This movie officially brought that incarnation of Steve Rogers to the MCU.
This whole movie is about government surveillance in a post-9/11 world. When the PATRIOT act was passed, the government gave itself new power to spy on citizens without a warrant. At the time, Republicans argued that the government should be allowed to spy on anyone without warrants because "What do you have to fear if you did nothing wrong?"
This whole movie is basically a patriotic figurehead explaining exactly why that is a bad idea to people who probably would not accept that criticism from anyone else.
This movie also introduces Falcon. Falcon is far from the first Black hero in the Marvel universe, but he was the first that I noticed as a child in the 1970s, so this character will always have a special place in my heart.
The original story function of Sam Wilson was to introduce the topic of racism to Captain America stories. I was more than a little bummed that they did not use the Sam Wilson character that way in the movies.
Thankfully, they made up for lost time in the Falcon and the Winter Soldier TV show. Sam Wilson is finally Sam Wilson in the MCU.

This is the best MCU film to me, mainly because it doesn't follow the other films, by being a carbon copy.

Hydra/Shield was doing something suss on the ship and Fury had his doubts so he sent the pirates to try retrieve info. But Shield wanted to rescue the agents so Fury sent Natasha to make sure she gets all the info on the computers. What doesn't make sense to me is why Fury couldn't access the files. Was he locked out of the Shield database? Or was his access hacked? And we never actually get to see what was on the usb

Not sure if you know but the guy on the ship Captain America fights solo is George St Pierre. They are fighting with his form. Chris Evans I believe had to train to be able to fight like him.

Did Jenny Agutter really look like that much of an old lady tho? Maybe you can watch LOGAN'S RUN or AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON to see what she looked like back in the day. That's the thing I like about Robert Redford's casting here too. If there had been a Captain America movie when he was young there's no doubt he would have been him. But years of politics and becoming the establishment would turn you into a villain so he was the perfect casting. Like what if Captain America became a government official.
