  • Lou Reed, promised the most asskicking All-Star band in history, expresses dismay upon seeing Adam Sandler, Jack Black, Dana Carvey, Jimmy Fallon and Conan O'Brien, but then blows the roof off the Roseland Ballroom at the first "Night of Too Many Stars" benefit for Autism research and services, taped February 27, 2003.

I have to say I am shocked at the amount of snubbing I'm seeing in the comments at these comedians' musical talents. .. Conan O'Brien took a show on tour for several several months in or around 2009, showcasing not just his comedy, but musical talent also, he plays the guitar fairly regularly; Dana has showcased his drumming in Wayne's World for real, AND slayed here; Jack Black is one half of killer band "Tenacious D", and if you haven't heard of it, look it up; Adam Sandler is partly famous for writing his own silly songs and selling them on his CD's (at least when I was coming up, that's what he was doing, besides Billy Madison & Happy Gilmore); and Jimmy ... what can ya say about Jimmy Fallon besides he's been known to strum. ...

As much as I love Lou and all his early work, he didn't even bother to try singing when he was older. I saw the VU at the Wembly Arena in the UK in the early 90's and old timers were walking out in disgust. The only song they didn't totally bastardize was Venus is Furs, and I knew I was in the presence of a legend. But what ever, no one can hold a candle is his early albums and they were a huge part of my teenage life that I'll never forget. And he was a good sport doing this. Thank you youtube algorithm, this was a real treat I needed.

    • @thehighllama8101

I never understood what Lou Reed was going for with his talk style of singing. He made an actual effort to sing when he was in the Velvet Underground. Loaded is one of my favorite albums of all-time. Then, what happened? Besides Transformer, which is really a Bowie/Reed album, I can't stand to listen to a solo Reed album because of Reed's singing style.

@@thehighllama8101 He sings just fine on "The Blue Mask". Much better than on "Transformer" which is good but very overrated and chock full of talk singing. It was sandwiched between two better records. His voice in VU was very thin and boyish. Don't really care for it. The "White Light/White Heat" LP had lots of talk singing. "Loaded" I have not heard forever but didn't Doug Yule push Lou to sing more? I still force myself to listen to VU sometimes to this day but never look too forward to it.
I guess you don't consider manly man vocals to be legit? From "Rock and Roll Animal" on his voice matured heavily. People go apeshit over the intro to "Sweet Jane" but once his voice comes in after the fader riding applause I feel like I'm home. The versions of 'Vicious" and "Satellite of Love" off "Lou Reed Live" are absolutely menacing. All apha and pumped up.
I will say that his manly style suffered very noticeably from about the late 90's until his death as he hardly bothered to carry a tune. Now that is a legit criticism but mainly I think from a live standpoint. I had that problem with Bob Dylan at a concert in 2006. He could not carry a tune at all. Could not even finish lines. It was sad. There is a live video from '00 of Reed doing "The Blue Mask" which is horrible. No good live renditions of it anywhere.
Off the top of my head the "Street Hassle" title track (sans the poetry section) or "Heavenly Arms" off "The Blue Mask" are slightly less macho examples of his non talk style vocals that are quite melodic.

I like that Jack Black, Dana Carvey and Conan are actually huge fans and thus they give Lou his personal space on stage. Everyone else is getting in his face but those guys have way to much respect for Lou to do that. Even though it is a comedy routine, Jack Black would rather milk the audience than try and annoy Lou (unlike Sandler).
