- The MK 38 (M242 Bushmaster) is a 25 mm (25×137mm) chain-driven machine gun system (MGS) installed for ship self-defense. A derivative of the M242 system, the Mk 38 consists of the M242 chain gun and the Mk 88 Mod 0 machine gun mount. The MK 38 MOD 0 25 mm MGS replaced the MK 16 20 mm gun system and was then upgraded to a MK 38 MOD 1 MGS. Designed primarily as a close-range defensive measure, it provides protection against patrol boats, floating mines, and various shore-based targets.
It is an externally powered, chain-driven, single-barrel weapon which may be fired in semi-automatic, burst, or automatic modes. It is fed by a metallic link belt and has dual-feed capability. The term "chain gun" derives from the use of a roller chain that drives the bolt back and forth. The standard rate of fire is 200 rounds per minute. The weapon has an effective range of 3,000 metres (9,800 ft), depending on the type of ammunition used.

Wasn't in the navy, army vet here. Served as a bradley mechanic and the main gun on the M2A3 Bradley is a bushmaster 25mm M242 gun. Very capable weapon.
ah yeah, Capable was the word I was looking for, what a huge firepower.
Shooting starts at 1:20 for those of you in the company bathroom like myself who want to just see the good stuff before somebody else walks in / makes you have to mute.
God these guys have it way easier than on a Bradley especially to disassemble and assemble

For those who are doubtful about them not scoring hits, its really difficult to score hits in sea conditions, you are moving up, down and sideways , so is the target, and you've got wind to take care as well.
And in real life, the threat would be much bigger, like a skiff or a boat.

Hey. Try shooting from that when you have to calculate both the time the bullets would take to get to the target. But also your ships velocity, because bullets actually acquire the velocity the ship has. Add all of that you don't know all of them, and the jiggle, you get this this much misses. I think you'll be even worse at this.

That is an amazing gun! I assume you can't get one personally. But my hats off for all our brothers in arms! I wasn't able to join the military because of health issues. But I will forever salute people who defend our country and me. I sure wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that gun. God bless America!
As a Gunner's Mate onboard DDG994, my watch station was the Starboard side 25mm machinegun. I spent 12 hours per day there while my ship participated in operation" Ernest Will" in the Persian Gulf 1988.
I love this gun. The naval ship makes me forget it. Although I have been discharged for a long time, seeing this gun reminds me of the past and salutes the navy here.

There is a "dampener" on the 242 which can increase the resistance to the barrel rising from recoil . Some guys are naturals firing this weapon and some will never be on a crew list because they are afraid of it . The guy at 2:50 got phased out .

The secret to getting by these guys is have a small boat.
