- The MK 15 Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS - pronounced "sea-whiz") is a fast-reaction, rapid-fire 20-millimeter gun system that provides US Navy ships with a terminal defense against anti-ship missiles that have penetrated other fleet defenses. Designed to engage anti-ship cruise missiles and fixed-wing aircraft at short range, Phalanx automatically engages functions usually performed by separate, independent systems such as search, detection, threat evaluation, acquisition, track, firing, target destruction, and ceasefire.
CIWS has been a mainstay self-defense system aboard nearly every class of ship since the late 70s. It was originally designed to defeat low-altitude anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs). As anti-ship cruise missiles became more complex in maneuvers and ability to be detected, and warfare areas moved from the open ocean to littoral environments, CIWS has evolved to meet the threat.
The Phalanx is a necessity for U.S. naval ships to enter disputed seas or seas with a U.S. adversary conducting “Anti-access/area denial” (A2/AD) operations within the territory. A2/AD is an increasing issue in areas such as the South China Sea and the Baltic territories. Without systems such as the Phalanx, U.S. naval vessels would be vulnerable to cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, or aerial attacks. Having the capability to shoot down incoming threats can give U.S. sailors confidence to maintain the balance of power on the sea.

I know this because I was a CIWS tech for 6 years. The point I was making is that the video is about CIWS and CIWS is a 20mm gun that, normally, does not use tracers. And, NEVER uses 25mm rounds.
I'm not sure why they added the 25mm cannon in that video.

My uncle was in charge of the sea whizz program here in Canada. When we had naval day somebody forgot to stand the weapon down and it trained on an American sea king helicopter and it opened up. Thank god it was unloaded at the time.
The sea-wiz Phalanx is so crazy. I got to see one perform in real life and it's just absolutely ridiculous how fast and accurately it fires O.O

I remember watching a live-fire against a towed aerial target when I was on CVN-70. The R2D2 got one burst off, which severed the cable from the target, which then barely missed falling onto the flight-deck. Demo-fires at night were also a fun sight, all those tracers!
Same gun as fighter jets - M61A1. The way it aims at air targets is really neat.
Its kind of a pain to load.

I worked on block 0 and block 1 mounts in the 90s.
I wonder if such guns would stop missiles too that slipped through? Definately need such close range defense system tho like on a ship cuz against small drones etc sometimes..

"it's not what you think". It's possible the CIWS wouldn't have a target profile that would cover a slow moving propeller aircraft.
Actually I think some planes would have gotten through (depending on how many CWIS are armed and scanning)

It’s fucking insane how they will shoot a handful of these and they’ll annihilate their target. But they can also shoot 1,000 of these in less than 20 seconds.

I will admint, that I kinda hate weapons (unless it is for target practice) and I hate war. But I also am not stupid, adn know these are nessesary.. And I could watch CIWS/C-RAM all day long.. they are needed and very cool ;-)
Supposed to be able to stop antiship missiles, but they don't seem to be able to hit a small boat with that ciws

Against that pirate boat, the CIWS looked ineffective to me. The Mk-38, though, was awesome in this application.

The worry isn't pirates, rather Iranian fast boats or boat-borne IEDs.

Absoulty amazing. There automatic too, so if ur at war the sea whizz can pick out an enemy plane and destroy it on it's own, never mind the rail gun, or the laser.

They aren't fully automated. Source my dad was a sea wiz operator which came in handy during a shooting drill when it shredded the target and then started tracking the wire up to the jet that had been pulling the target.

I remember being on CV-64 And hearing that sound..ahhhh..I'm safe..amazing though..They say it shoots so many rounds a minute but it's always not true.. It's all classified baby.

The mk 38 slow loader seemed more accurate at ground/base targets. Probably a better defence against shipping. The chain gun relies on volume off rounds to hit its target. Accuracy per round is actually very poor.

This is a 6 barrelled 20mm Gatling gun that fires 100 rounds a second and carries about 900-1000 rounds on the mount (I wonder how many reloads are carried?). It's the same gun as carried by many U.S jet fighters and yes it does fire 100 rounds a second but if you're an enemy pilot with quick enough reflexes you could possibly get out of the way because it takes a few seconds to build up to firing 100 rounds a second.
The Dutch have something similar/better called Goalkeeper that packs the 7 barrelled 30mm cannon as carried by the A-10 Thunderbolt (the cannon that will knock out Tanks!) and I think I'd rather have one (or more!) of those if I was Captain of a warship in hostile waters. I can just imagine what Goalkeeper would do to any aircraft/drone/missile/boat!!!☠☠☠
For tanks, its gonna get bombarded from above, but for planes, its certain death for them in the sea

We had one on My ship in the Navy! Two guys that were doing some maintenance to it one day ruined some titanium part in it that cost about $250.000 to replace! 😳so much for maintenance!!!

They used to use remote controlled aerial vehicles, aka drones, to practice AA gunnery. Ironic that drones are what they're good against.
