Beth, this is fairly late period Steve Walsh, and he had a lot of vocal problems over the past 25 yrs or so. To hear the REAL Steve, you should check out something of his from the 70s, when he had extraordinary range and power

Yeah. Steve still had the drive and the passion, but by the late 2000s early 2010s he just didn't have the pipes any more. I saw them a couple times just before he retired and you could hear the strain, alas. I've been nothing but impressed with the job Ronnie Platt's been doing in the intervening years, however. He's definitely the right man for the job.

You really need to hear Steve sing the original. Unfortunately he led may I say a very “active” lifestyle and did not take care of his money maker, his voice. Also, I was at this show as a vip ticket holder. It was their first DVD show called Device Voice Drum shot on film in Atlanta. I also got to meet each band member. Steve was my childhood hero and we spent 5-10 minutes sharing stories. You are a bit off in your opening. Kerry was not at the show.

Being a Roman Catholic, on Ash Wednesday when we receive ashes the priest normally states ' Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.' A very humbling act and statement to begin Lent every year. This song is to played when my time is done here on Earth, I have asked my daughter to make sure of this. The other song request is 'The Great Gig In the Sky' by Pink Floyd. Probably two of the most moving songs of my youth, and both are so beautiful.
Kerry Livgren is the genius of the group. They are all super talented, which is obvious, but Kerry is the one that had the touch of the gods when it came to lyrics and the uber complexity on many of the songs that he wrote. Recommend, if you can get your hands on it, the rockumentary - Miracles out of Nowhere. It documents the "Miracles" that it took to take a band from literally, the middle of nowhere, to the top of the progressive Rock world. England has numerous Prog Rock bands, The USA really has only a few, with Kansas the best of them.
PS, Steve Walsh is the most underappreciated Rock Vocalist of all time.
Kerry could pull a song out of thin air on short notice and it would be a bona fide masterpiece. Look at Carry On Wayward Son. It was a last minute addition to Leftoverture, and now I've read several places that it is one of the most played songs on classic rock radio. You can't hardly throw a rock in this country without hitting a radio station playing that song. :D And there is no greater goosebump moment in a concert to having everyone in the room hit that a capella intro together :D
Hi Beth, Robbie was playing an electric violin, the guitarists were original guitarist Rich Williams on the right & bassist Billy Greer on the left. Kerry had previously left the band. You really need to hear stuff from the 70's to experience Steve Walsh's true power. Recommend: Paradox, Miracles out of nowhere, Icarus borne on wings of steel, The Wall & Point of no return, cheers

I would add Incomudro - Hymn to the Atman to get the whole band. It has a Wagnerian feel to the song.
Electric Violin was around before they started using it. Thanks for reminding me of this band. I had forgotten how good they were and apparently are.
OH yeah, definitely they ARE. If you're anywhere NEAR where one of their 50th anniversary tour dates is, go see 'em. You will be blown away. They are one of the tightest, most skilled live bands you'll ever run past your eardrums. :)
He's actually playing a viola
Rich Williams is on guitar with Billy Greer, Kerry Livgren was retired by 2014 (when this was recorded - I believe). Steve had throat polyps surgery in the 1990’s and his voice never fully recovered. The band actually played the music a step down to help Steve in concert. Never the less Steve still does a great job.

Of the original six who initially formed what everyone thinks of as Kansas, only drummer Phil Ehart and guitarist Rich Williams remain. Walsh bowed out in the early 80s, and was replaced by John Elefante. Violinist/vocalist Robby Steinhardt left soon after. Livgren and bassist Dave Hope split in the mid 1980s and the bend went on a short hiatus. Walsh returned, and new bassist Billy Greer (playing the other acoustic along with Rich Williams) came in, and the band went back to making records and touring like mad. Steinhardt came and went a time or two, alternating with David Ragsdale (who also plays guitar and sings). Guitar phenom Steve Morse also joined up for a while. Kerry cropped back up to write all the material for 2000's Somewhere to Elsewhere, recorded the album in his home studio, and played the occasional show. Walsh's voice was starting to show strain at this point, and he left the band for good in the mid 2010s. Ronnie Platt is their current lead vocalist/2nd keyboardist and he does a bang up job. Dave Manion (who used to be the band's lighting technician) split keyboard duties with Platt when he replaced Walsh. Producer Zak Rizvi came in on guitar for a few years. Manion stepped away and in came Tom Brislin on keyboards and vocals. Ragsdale has recently stepped down and been replaced on violin, guitar, and vocals by Joe Deninzon. And alas, Robby Steinhardt passed away just a couple of years ago. Just prior to embarking on their 50th anniversary tour last month Ehart was sidelined by an arm injury. His drum tech Eric Holmquist played the last few gigs of the previous tour, and is alternating with Ehart on drums on the current tour while Ehart's arm gets back to 100%. It's an ever-shifting lineup. but like it said on their first album cover: WE ARE KANSAS! KANSAS IS A BAND!

HI Beth, The phrase dust in the wind is from the Book of Ecclesiastes written by King Solomon. It is beautiful and the performance of Kansas and the message give me shivers.
It wasn't written by King Solomon! No one knows who wrote it!
"Dust in the wind" is not in Ecclesiastes. Human effort is likened to chasing the wind in Ecclesiastes as is our destiny to return to dust, but not that particular image.
Kerry Livgren: "I was reading a book on American Indian poetry one day, and I came across that line - this American Indian said: "for all we are is dust in the wind." And I thought, well, you know, that's really true. Here I got all this success - I've got material possessions - I've got a goal in my life that had been accomplished at that point, but I'm going back into the ground - and what does this really mean in light of that? And that's really kind of the message of that song, but the amazing thing was that so many people identified with that."
And by the way, The Bible was written in the Middle East so it’s not Western Spiritualism. Unless you were referring to the Native American saying.

This recording is from I think the year 2000? Its from a live video album called Device Voice Drum. Also, that isnt Kerry Livgrin. Livgrin wasnt with them anymore (and still isnt). The person playing the guitar is Rich Williams, their lead guitar player.
Hi Beth! Yeah this version is a later version of Kansas. Walsh's voice here is not as strong as it was had been. But i did like that middle fugue section, that was cool!
Thank you for reacting to this classic song from the band, Kansas. As a native Kansan I followed Kansas since the 1980's. The word Kansas is actually a native American word. That word being "Kanza." Which translates to people of the south wind.
"People of The South Wind" is the title of a Kansas tune. The band has always been conscious of the fraught relations between the United States and the nations that were already here as the US spread across the continent. Give a listen to "Cheyenne Anthem."
I believe that Kansas was one of the first rock bands to have a violin as part of the band. I never said it was the ONLY rock band with a violin.

Seeing this brings back memories.
Kansas did a USO tour to Germany back in the late 80's, and they came to the small Kasserne I was stationed on and performed in our gym.
I can clearly remember Rich Williams playing (with a lit cigarette wedged into the strings of his guitar occasionally!) standing maybe 3 feet away from me on a 2 foot tall stage.
Great performance. I only wish I'd have been one of the guys detailed to act as roadies.
Kansas as a band was big on the Native American themes in n all of their early music. Mix that with Kerry’s Christian beliefs as a writer you get the connections you pointed out. This was one of the last performances of Kansas as the mostly original band but in their prime, they were incredible. Steve’s voice, even as he started to lose it around this time, was always amazing but even more powerful in the 70’s and 80’s recordings! He was among the best vocalists around and the preeminent showman as a frontman for a band. I saw him in the early 80’s during wayward son do hand stands on his keyboards, as he played!!!

I'm so confused. That is not early Kansas, they were not old men in the 70s. I was around and listening when this album was released. Did I miss something? The reason he's on an electric violin is that this ISN'T the 70s. But he very much could have been even back then, as they were available in the 60s. I like this arrangement/interpretation better than the original. I don't remember the orchestra being this prominent on the original, but will have to go listen again. The timing is quite different than the original studio take, much more fluid and musical.
Just went and looked, and yes, he was playing an electric then, you can see the chord on his shirt, which swings down when he moves the violin off of his shoulder.

I agree but there are some beautiful elements in this version that the studio version doesn't have.
Steve Walsh at his peak in the early 70’s to late 70’s was as great a singer as there has ever been in rock. In fact there are times in their songs where one might confuse a sound they hear as a synth when in fact it is Steve hitting some insane high note such as the ending of the song The Pinnacle.
Yeah he had a unreasonably high range for as powerful a tenor as he was.
Actually, Kerry Livgren, the songs author had left the band by this time. The guitarist is (another original member) Rich Williams. Robbie Steinhardt played a violin with an attached pickup (so essentially electric … but a true violinist). In this song there are two violin parts, so one is recorded.

This violin is equipped with a MIDI pickup to control a synthesizer sound module, basically a violin instead of a Keyboard controller.

As mentioned, Steve Walshs voice is well past its peak here. Just give the original recorded version a listen. His range was incredible and such an emotional delivery. Incidentally, Kate Bush was the first to use a wireless mic for live work back in the 70s.
Slightly off-topic - the Shure Vagabond wireless mic solution was available from 1953. Bulky, short range, limited battery life and expensive but nevertheless a commercial offering. In 1960 broadcasters used wireless mics at both Republican and Democratic conventions for audience questions. I do not know if these were live transmissions. Kate Bush certainly was the first charting singer to use a wireless mic in concert but as importantly she used a headset mic to free both hands for dance. With 3 degrees of separation I have been told that she put in hours daily to the discipline of dance. She (to my understanding) was innovative in integrating antennae into her wardrobe for longer range and aesthetic pleasure. I am certainly not dismissing her contributions - simply establishing a timeline that includes the run-up.

The pic you chose to show Kerry Livgren (Guitarist/Keyboardist) is actually "Rich Williams", the Lead & Rhythm Guitarist that was also a founding member. And as pointed out, this was a later era of the Kansas line-up Live. Kerry left the band in 1983, returned briefly in 1990-91, and recorded 1 more Kansas album "Somewhere to Elsewhere" in 2000. He also appears on the live video "There's No Place Like Home" (2000).
*Spiritual References . . .*
(from Kerry Livgren's book "Seeds of Change") Kerry had gone through a few Eastern Philosophies in his life and had been on a Spiritual Quest since his childhood. Though many of his early songs used various Biblical references, it wasn't until he went on Tour with "Ambrosia" and had a discussion on their bus with vocalist David Pack, that he began to delve into the Bible and became a Christian during the tail end of Touring for the "Monolith" album (1979). And expressed it on a few tracks from "Audio Visions" (1980), and the following album where Steve Walsh had left, being replaced by "John Elefante" (who did a fantastic job) on "Vinyl Confessions" (1981) which was the 1st time I saw them, and my 1st concert (I was pretty late seeing concerts). And the tour is available to watch here on Yt, live from Omaha.
Unfortunately, there are not a lot of high quality LIVE performances of the Deep Cut tracks that really showed the full virtuosity of Kansas. They have so many tracks to choose from up to 1980, that the list would be LONG. I had sent an email to you a few months ago, but these days you are probably SWAMPED with suggestions.

If there were a higher quality version, there is a version of low quality (Yt) of their EPIC track from their debut album, "Journey from Mariabronn" that was live on-stage, from the music variety program "Don Kirchner's Rock Concert" (that is available on the Kansas Box Set "Sail On"). The last verse that Walsh sings while playing the Hammond Organ, where he sustains a note and decreases and elevates it is ASTOUNDING.
Btw - The late-great Robby Steinhardt (Vocals/Violin) may have been using some enhancing effects, though usually he plays it clean (if on a traditional violin or "electric"), but has used effects for certain parts in a couple of tracks. Also the newer violinist (since "Freak of Nature" from 1995) "David Ragsdale" has used Fx more extensively. Another band that had a Violinist (and Keyboardist) using even more effects is Eddie Jobson of the Fusion/Progressive Rock band *UK* (featuring Bassist/Vocalist "John Wetton" of King Crimson & Asia fame), and had some wild Violin Soloing. If only they had quality live footage, that would be an unusual band to react to :).
Also note: Kansas and *Yes* especially, were pioneers of Staging, Lighting and various sound technology (including Yes "Talk" being one of the 1st albums to be "digital").
- I hope you find either Live video, or react to older (pre-81) studio tracks to take a listen to, to hear Steve Walsh at the peak of perfection, and when the original line-up were playing on all cylinders of creativity :).

Beth this was way past the original release of the song. Maybe the 90's or early 2000's? Find the 1970's version for the best vocal performance of Kansas with this song :)
I was working in a bicycle shop when this song was in heavy rotation on the station the shop radio was tuned to all day everyday. After a few weeks of hearing it every day we were pretty tired of it. Eventually, after a repeat of "Everything is dust in the wind," one of my co-workers said loudly, feigning disgust, "Oh, no it's not!" It gave us a good chuckle, and still brings me a smile.
That whole show is excellent.
Electric violin goes back to at least the mid-70s with Jean-Luc Ponty and others. The original Kansas version of this was acoustic violin -- and Steve Walsh before his voice started to go.

This is a later performance, so that is an electric violin, probably running through a synth. The solo on the original features two overlaid acoustic violins.

Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks (Colorado/God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 600 miles round trip with roughly $1.00 gas
I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (former Harrah's outdoor venue) Still killin' it.

Incidentally, Livgren (who was not present here -- this is Billy Greer on acoustic guitar and Rich Williams, one of only two remaining original founders of the band presently, on electric guitar) wrote this song roughly four or five years before he became a Christian. He later wrote that Dust in the Wind has brought more people to Christ than anything he ever wrote as a Christian. It's truly an inspired masterpiece of a song and his wife was right to insist he make it into a full-fledged song. Incidentally, I've heard that he was still hesitant about it when he played it for the other guys and they actually overruled him. Everyone else in the band wanted to record it, over Livgren's misgivings, and the rest is history.
Yeah, his wife's offhand comment of "That's pretty; you should write some words for it" gave the band their single biggest hit. :D
This was my high school (1978) class song. It always takes me back to high school.

Yes, this is a great song. One of my favorites from Kansas. This performance appears to be about 2004 (based on his look), hence the electric violin. The use of an electric violin is because it is in a large venue and it would be easier to put through audio than the regular wooden violin. You can tell this because even the ones in the back don't have the full richness of those notes and string solo The studio version has an actual wood violin ensemble. It sounds like there are at least 4 of them plus a cello.
While this was a good performance, it is not as good as Kansas did it in their 70's concerts. The dynamics of Steve Walsh's voice were even more precise, multilayered, and awesome.
"Cary On Wayward Son", "Point of No Return", "All I wanted", "Song for America", and "Miracles Out of Nowhere" are other songs you may want to check out from Kansas.

Kerry was on a spiritual journey at the time he wrote this. He tried virtually every religion ultimately coming back to his Christian roots. Read his book called Seeds Of Change.
I was there, this is not early Steve Walsh, it's good, but not early. Also, there were two violin parts, Robby (RIP) was playing one part, the other was played by the violins in the back. This was part of the DVD filming. Watch early Steve Walsh.

As others have said, this is NOT early Kansas. The song is from their early days but the performance is more likely within the last 10 years.
I'd recommend either the original audio recording or a live performance (or even the official video) from that time frame to truly hear them at their peak. 6:15
From what I've been able to gather, this particular performance was from 2002 and was released on the Device Voice Drum concert DVD.

Hey Beth. The band members right to left are Rich Williams on acoustic, Steve Walsh on lead vocals, Robbie Steinhardt on violin and I never did get a close enough shot of the guitarist on the far left to identify him. This performance is from one of their orchestra-accompanied shows larer in their career. Steve's voice has lost some of it's range and power at this point and Kerry Livgren had left the band to pursue a solo career in Christian music. The original recording from the "Point of Know Return" album was more stripped back than this but just as beautiful.
That's "Billy Greer" the Bassist (back-up vocalist) playing Acoustic with Rich. He now has been in Kansas longer than Dave Hope. How time flies . . . .
My first Kansas show was live at the whiskey tour in 1987 or 88 at garam central Station in Glendale AZ front row Steve Walsh still had his vocals then too

I've just worked out the violin parts on guitar (hey cut me some slack, it's been 45 years since I played a violin! :D ) . It's interesting; the call-and-response was written for viola and violin but Robby didn't have a viola, so they recorded the viola part on violin then slowed down the tape to get it into the viola's register. Ah the good ol' days. :D

Live st the whiskey was a great version of this song he still had his vocal range it was in the mid late 80s unfortunately Kerry left and came back only at the whiskey on california show as guest spot wish he stayed on
Iconic is a burned out word in comments but the way he stepped back (as a vocalist) for the violins to close the song is iconic. Bill and Ted. Dust. Wind. Dude. 👈

6:29 So far you are the only reactor I've heard that has notice the similarity of thought between this song and the first two chapters of Ecclesiastes. All except one of the band became Christians. I don't know which one left but I remember a video about them replacing him with John and Dino Elefante. Their conversion was announced with the album "Vinyl Confessions" you might want to listen to the track from it "Crossfire".
Speaking of using 'the wind' as metaphor in a beautiful song, the Blues Project's version of Donovan's "Catch the Wind" off of their first album, 'Live at the Cafe au Go Go' released in 1966 is worth a listen...loved it back then and it hasn't lost any of its emotional power.
Hello, Beth. I've listened to quite a few of your reactions.... Just a note, Kerry is not playing here. He had a stroke some years earlier. This performance of much later in Kansas' career; and Steve Walsh's voice has lost much of its strength... yet he still does amazingly well.
This and the Song Power was always my favorite of theirs.
This is one of those songs where the words suddenly become more of reality as you grow older and then.., it's already too late. The irony of life is you only become aware in most cases, when the irony has already past you by. And we all die alone though convinced by sleight of hand that we, do not.
Robby was not putting his violin through any effects - they had a full orchestra behind them. Also, Kerry was not on stage here. That is Billy Greer playing acoustic guitar, NOT Kerry.
Robbie Steinhardt (the violinist), liked to double his violin with an analogue synth violin sound. He said that, strangely, the violin alone sounded artificial.

Ok… it’s hard to sift through the permutations of such a long-lived band like Kansas.
First, Kerry Livgren is not in the vid u chose… that’s Rich Williams. The band had 2 lead guitarists. Livgren played some of the lead guitar and a lot of keyboards. Walsh was a great organist and singer… though by the time of this show, Steve was in his 60’s and weathered a life of drug & alcohol use.
He does a good job here, but he’s leagues away from where he once was - in the same category as Steve Perry, Lou Gramm & and Mickey Thomas.
You must hear the medieval cover version of this song by Hildegard Fon Blingin'.
It's almost impossible to get a since of these older bands when they are not in their prime. I would go back to Kansas's live album "Two For The Show" to get a real since of the master that was Steve Walsh.
You should definitely check out Kansas performances from the 70s. Steve Walsh was an elite vocalist
True, true, but don't sell "the new guy" short. Ronnie Platt is a remarkably good vocalist in his own right, and can nail most of the crucial Walshisms :D

This is not early Kansas. Steve had one of the best voices in the business, but Robbie was damn near as good. You need to find one of the songs he sings lead in. One of the best live bands and yes Steve use to be cray on stage doing hand stands on keyboards and all kinds of crazy action.
The violin is just a neck in the middle, so electric.

When He is doing his solo on the violin) If you have listened to the studio version, he does the solo, in here though, the phrasing parts of the solo are overlapping by the other violins that it sounds as if he was lipsingin(I used it as an illustration) so that's what I assume you're confused with. I believe.
The violin solo was written as a call-and-response between viola and violin. Robby recorded the viola part on violin and they slowed the tape down to get the pitch into the viola's register. Then he recorded the violin part and they overlayed the two when they mixed the record.

Yeah, the 70s and early 80s are wheb Steve was in his prime, their first 5 albums. This is when he came back to the band and his voice had been severely damage over the years.
Carry was not with the band when they recored that video. That is Richie playing the guitar.

We're looking at the Kansas member playing his violin, and at the same time we hear the backup orchestra playing different stuff.
Can't help but play air-violin to. Just as Marshall Tucker Band and Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull made flute playing cool, this does the same for the violin.

Kerry Livgren is not "playing acoustic guitar here". He was the creator of the song though.
On the original album, the violin solo was a duet with a synthesiser. It appears that in this recording at least one violin was "processed".
