Another very interesting vid, over in the UK we had the Vauxhall Ventora FE which is very similar to the Holden Premier but probably a bit smaller and fitted with a 3.3 litre straight 6. That Zephyr 6 is a beauty and brought back memories of my Dad’s Zodiac MK3, the fashion in the 70’s was to bolt in a Rover (Buick) 3.5 V8 but I think that American 5.0 litre trumps that !

Holden got the chev v8 in 307 and 327 for the 1968 Hk model year.
The 1989 ht's went to the Holden engine in 308 and 253 with the Chevy 350 replacing the 327 in the top spec monaro .
The p76 had a 4.4 liter v8 based on the Buick 215 with McPherson struts and rack and pinon steering. Anyone who has driven one would know it was far ahead of the Holden ford and valiants handing of the time.
It came out just as the oil shocks hit and was never developed further . Few remain on the road as rust was a major issue

@1:36 is a cabover semi! (The cab is yellow.) They're still widely in use outside the USA.
That Holden Premier looks a bit like a '72 Lemans without the split in the grill, when viewed from the front and side. The way the backlite and trunk tumble home to the rear bumper is similar to the Lemans too. The 308 looks a bit like a Buick without the distributor, with its aluminum timing case/cover. Didn't know Holden had their own V8 architecture.
The SBF in that Zephyr looks pretty normal to me, other than that distributor - looks like a polished Holley fuel bowl hanging off of the side of it! Did Pintos get V8s there? I've heard that Ford had originally intended a V8 option on the Pinto in the USA.
And the Valiant. I really like that grill - the corner lights scream '72 Chevelle to me. The Hemi is kind of a let down to see - it looks just like any other OHV I6. LOVE them Aussie/NZ MOPAR door handles too! There's a bit of '62-or-so Chrysler in the C pillar and tops of the quarter panels.
Sounds like a Crotch Rocket Paradise there!!! Race track nearby?
Excellent video and I can't wait for the subsequent parts. I love seeing cars I'm unfamiliar with, if they follow the pre-1980 American formula.

When I visited NZ in the early 80s, there were plenty of 1950s era cars still getting around. I remember seeing Ford Prefects and Zephyrs running around that had long disappeared from Australian roads. NZ had a bit of a reputation back then for being able to keep those old cars running.

One late afternoon, while my wife and daughter ordered take out for supper, there was a vintage car show in a nearby parking lot. I sneaked out and quickly snapped some pictures. Thanks for apologising for the 'vertical view', it's one of my pet hates as I keep wanting to put my hands up to the screen and open the 'blinds' in order to see something! You are forgiven in this case. Cool video by the way, thanks for posting.

The earlier ones certainly were but I guess they may have have switched to the E body for that body style

    • @kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160
      @kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160  ปีที่แล้ว

Ok so that body style came out in 71 and the aussies made everything from scratch. The previous years were American Valiants with a Aussie front clip. The wheel base was longer and they were a bit wider so may have been close to an E body but not actually. Ya learn something every day😁👍

From one Kiwi to another - welcome home, brother! You're out in my neck of the woods, mate :) I'm not far away - Takanini for 12 years now and Papakura for 15 before that - and have had an association with Pukekohe in one way or another since about 1985, with mates living there, going to the track to race or watch racing and even for work for a few years. She's changed quite a bit in the past 10 or so, but still a lovely place to be. Pity the race track is closing down though - end of an era that one, eh. Sounded like there was some bikes racing on the track while you were at C.A.R.S. as well. I'll be there for the send-off when it happens, but gotta get a WoF on the Mini to take part as the Mini club won't let me upstage them by taking the Stag out there! Love the Prem and the Regal. You're right - you don't see many of them around and most of the ones I HAVE seen have been restored to the point that they don't get out much except on trailers for shows......which is a shame. That Zephyr is a piece of magic and all. If I were the owner I think I'd have kittens watching people get in and out in case that beautiful paintwork got marked, so she's definitely not for me! All the best

I am not sure I could even make my left arm work correctly to shift the thing into drive!
Love the American flag on the wall! We all think of you down under folk as odd cousins we need to keep an eye on in case someone starts shit with you. They will have to deal with the crazy American cousins with all the guns!!!

Designed that way to handle the heat in aussie SBC cooked easy in the out backs 74 ford started casting their own Cleveland blocks the imported ones cracked from the heat 80 81 82 Cleveland blocks called the black motors were cast using the same material as the nascar blocks. Holden also done a black motor in the same era an aussie only 6 called a 3.3 the last of them were fuel injected before that same motor was orange 202 ci.

Having a wider cylinder bank angle, wouldn't a 308 run rough, if it didn't have an offset-throw crankshaft like modern 90° V-6 engines do?
Those low-restriction exhaust manifolds, it has, are far superior to those of Chevrolet's smallblock. That 308 should move that lightweight Vauxhall/Opel body pretty well.
You should pull a prank on Uncle Tony, by shipping over one of those Hemi Valiants, park it in front of his garage door, open the bonnet, lock the vehicle and then disappear, until he telephones, asking if you happen to know who's car it is
