LEYLA GENCER grande interprete del bel canto ha spaziato per la sua voce completa in tutti registri, in tantissime opere dando ai personaggi da lei interpretati eccezionali momenti di virtuosismo e veridicità interpretativa leggendari.
Right from first seconds she acts as part of orchestra as it has to be, she always manages to adjust/colorate/blend her voice with leading instrument of the piece. Intelligent singing, exceptional "virtuosismo" coupled with astonishing voice clarity and precise tone, not only the emotions.
Keske EMI, kontrat imzalasaydi ve bu mukemmel sesi sonraki kusaklara aktarmak adina cd kaydi yapsaydi. Bu kadar guzel ve essiz bir yorum icin kelimeler yetersiz. Seni cok seviyorum Leyla Gencer !!!!
No, precisely what is missing is the weight. There was nothing Gencer could do about this (since it is God-given), but it does affect the pathos. Can you really say that anyone can make you cry the way Callas does?
+JimNickoloffMiami I am a devoted son of La Callas and am well aware of the emotional force of her interpretation and ability to manipulate her voice to express mood.. That being said, she can also make me cry from the shrieking pain I suffer from her top notes and unforgivable wobble.. Sorry.
Arbiter Veritatis, when describing “agility...weight...inwardness to this role...pure voice an flexible top” you evidently never heard of La Stupenda, JOAN SUTHERLAND, who premiered this production the previous year in England. That said, Leyla Gencer deserved commercial recordings and a Met contract as she is excellent.
disappointing, she rushes the tempo in teh beginning and sings too forte instead of painting this delicate melody like she should. she sounds like she wants to kill someone instead of wanting to be "let dying". also glottal "verismo-y" attacks, passaggio notes not good technically, often bad vibrato and pitch problems.
Thank you for sharing your expert analysis of Ms Gencer’s rendition of this most technically difficult aria. I so wish your erudite contribution could have included anything positive of relevant importance other than a negative criticism. Thanks

Don't speak in Turkish . So can follow up your trail!
Grande interprete di varie opere di Bellini la Gencer !
Fantastica! Sublime!
Without sacrificing agility, she gives a weight and inwardness to this role, as does Callas. But what a pure voice and flexible tone!

Freni delivered an amazing rendition of this in the 1962 performance with Kraus
