I just recently learned about this species, and I am beyond ecstatic that they are starting to thrive again. Everyone involved in giving these beautiful birds a second chance on Earth deserve so much praise. Also, the chicks are very cute. Loved how one of them poked his head out from under mom's wing. 🥰

Too much of what I get sent to me is soul crushing SAD...and makes me so angry...in a emotional rage really The little chick's are adorable are life affirming...and I've also learned of a flightless bird I never heard of. So happy their being protected....for all us animal lovers to rejoice.

I have The Living Planet in my DVD Collection. I wish I could say the same thing about this Smithsonian Channel documentary & some of the other Smithsonian Channel Documentaries that featured one of my favorite animals.
@@msbonsaihuman I know what I heard. What I meant was that 1st there were 200 of them left, now they’ve increased to 100 more. Hence a total of 300 of them today.
They are in breeding programs now. The eggs are pulled and incubated to give the chicks a better chance because stouts and other weasels were eating the eggs. Due to invasive species not native to the area more protective measures have been added. As shown in the pic the parents are banded. They are really giving a lot of effort into trying and so far it is showing very promising success. I don't know what age the chicks are returned or if it's a swap out as soon as they hatch. Article I read didn't go into too many specifics. It's always a little less depressing seeing a wild animal come back from the brink. Hopefully we can save more & ourselves at the same time. Every effort counts it's just daunting when people see the true big picture.
@@debbiefox6846 That too is the problem I heard from The Living Planet that the Stoats & Weasels are declining the numbers of New Zealand’s flightless Birds. Including the Cats that are causing the problem as well. Also last time I heard about the Takahes on The Living Planet, there was a little difficulty getting them to breed in captivity. But now they seem to be making a comeback. A little bit, but it’s a start.
I pray that these birds survive and thrive to a large population. It's sad to think that they were once extinct for about 50 years. We have to remember that these are God's creatures, and for species to die put because of human intervention is disturbing.
Make them pets. Their natural environment is forever changed and they can't compete with mammals. So they'll never be safe from extinction without human intervention anyway. I'll take one as a pet, they are cute as all get out.

Humans have become the malignancy to the planet. When you think of how much destruction we've done in the last 200 years alone it's pretty mind-blowing.
Glad to hear they've had success with trapping and killing large numbers of house cats. Those beasts are catastrophic to Earth's ecosystem. 98% of cat owners are highly irresponsible. There should be enormous fines for allowing pet cats to roam outside. If a cat is outside, it should be shot regardless of whether or not it has a collar.
Takahe chicks are the cutest things ever. I’m proud takahes are still alive not because of the chicks, but just how rare it is.
Imagine if other flightless birds like the Dodo survived to this day it would be Magnificent to witness 😢
