They only rediscovered the female kakapo in the 60s, over on the South Island in Fjordland, we didn’t have a government ministry for conservation til the 80s (before just a government service called NZ Wildlife Service), and they don’t breed too often, so unsurprisingly it’s been a long time before we could get the ball rolling. Though these birds have a long life span, we had worried that there wasn’t any females left, so until the rediscovery we thought we had to wait and watch the kakapo slowly die out. Their numbers are increasing however, with plans to eventually reintroduce them to Fjordland in the South Island is their pest eradication efforts succeed.

And so the humans thought the birds were stupid do to them not running away from them. learn some earth history before making dumb comments.

They’ll re-introduce them to the South Island in Fjordland once they get the remote areas pest free. So as long as things do as they have been, the kakapo will get better. Also: We kiwis are a stubbornly protective bunch when it comes to our wildlife, so no way in hell are we letting them get extinct
