Love, love, love Patricia Routledge. Her acting is superb, one of a kind performance. The entire cast was complimentary to the success of the series. When I need a lift in my mood I watch British humor. They are the best!!!

I've loved her ever since I saw the show years ago while I was home alone on a saturday night. As she and Richard were walking she took his arm. That brought tears to my eyes.
The times she visited her sister and the huge mutt snapper at her was classic British.

Once you see her completely different personality in "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates" you realize what a consummate actor Dame Routledge is. The two characters are worlds apart.

She thinks of herself as Upper Class, and wants to be referred to as rich! she does not listen to people because she is in a world of her own making. In reality she is just a middle class woman, with poor relations. except with her sister Violet and her cross dressing husband. She drives everyone around her insane, and they are afraid of her.
This is one of my favourite television shows. I have seen every episode numerous times. I used to watch it while I pumped in the night with my newborn. It saved me.

Saw Dame Patricia Rutledge in To Sir With Love. Hyacinth playing a school teacher. My favorite episode is the one when they visit a dealership and drive a Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit. Love how she talks on the telephone

Reminds me of an episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond" when the neighbors complain about Frank coming out in the morning to get his newspaper. They even shot a video to prove their complaint to Raymond. Showing Frank in his shorts one morning, and scratching himself, and then wearing a towel. Which he loses at one point. Then Frank comes in seeing them watching the video and says, "Whoops ! I see you're having a little PORNO party. Hey, who's the fat ass?" Then he sees it's himself.

How did Richard ever manage to put up with the insufferable Hyacinth? He was too soft on her I reckon, and let's not forget he only snapped at her on one occasion.
There used to be a lot of Richards around. Occasionally you can still see them. A man of a certain age standing in your way in a shop and not even noticing you, let alone moving out of your way, because *he was told to stand there* by She Who Must Be Obeyed.

Josephine Tewson (Elizabeth) said in a documentary that she thinks Richard is a slightly lazy person and Hyacinth does everything for him. Similarly, Patricia Routledge (Hyacinth) said in an interview "She kept a good table, his shirts were ironed, he was always well turned out, that's what a lot of men like, and they get used to it, so they'll put up with anything."
Poor Richard! He has the best seat in heaven.

Such good lines. "At least he's clean". She is also a bit like a lot of us - wondering what the neighbours are doing etc. A bit of her is in all of us.
The joke of this whole show is that Hyacinth thinks she is being respectable and impressing people by putting on airs, when in fact she misses all of the cues that she’s just annoying people and making them want to avoid her.
