Nice coverage of the Sport Sub! Brings back a lot of memories when I was building submarines with my dad in the 80s and 90s. I have a ton of photos of the subs we built and what others have built over the last 50 years. We were next to Sport Sub at a couple dive conventions.
The Sport Sub you got is in great shape. There are a few of those here in San Diego. A couple dive shops had them on their roof.
One of the first things you learn when you get into subs is the difference between a submarine, a submersible and a mobile diving bell which is what the Sport Sub is.
The Sport Sub is a diving bell with motors. It is an air pocket with a ton of weight on the bottom to keep it upright. If it tilts it floods. Some of the Sport Subs came with a regulator and a long hose so you could explore outside the sub.
Also the air pressure inside is the same as outside whatever depth you are. Which means pressure, dive tables and decompression, etc.
top speed is around 3 knots under water so in a 3 knot current you go nowhere.
My dad built the fastest personal mini sub back in the 70s and I helped him restore it in the late 80s. We took it to lots of car and boat shows.
Your sport sub looks in great shape. You should have lots of fun with it. Just be careful and never get in a hurry!
There are a few TV movies, etc you should watch like Trapped Beneath the Sea and so on.
I have a list of films and lots of articles, photos and info on personal subs if you are interested. I don’t have any kids so I need to pass them on to someone! LOL

Exactly what I was thinking TH-camrs tiktokers etc are known for getting themselves hurt or killed while trying to do get clout. There’s a good reason why submarines are pretty much strictly used by the military and cost millions rather than this dinky thing

Dude totally radical way to dive. I was in Bahamas diving and spear fishing in 98 and I am looking for pictures from back then. I am pretty sure I went down in very same model of submarine. I was passenger but got to drive it for a few minutes. Awesome experience!!! Congratulations!!

These subs are great fun. Operated one in the Caribbean and purchased one for a private resort in the Maldives. They are easy to operate but I would go through the whole system before you use it. Rob in Vancouver (Sport sub) will help you out. Great guy.

When at depth ~120 ft. the actual water level inside the sub will be up to your neck. (just up to the dash). I was looking at these when they first came out. Our Coast Guard boat licensing and insurance requirements here are a little more stringent than they are in Canada. I wish you luck in your adventure. My problems were insurance and alligators. Especially , when considering it was to be for commercial use. ( I backed out ) 👍👍 👍 Now I just use underwater drones from a boat.
I wondered how they prevented it from being crushed, so you add air to keep it pressurized...?and you've got to worry about compression sickness.
So not a sub, more like a motorised diving viewing area with big windows and wet feet.
Oh well, it'll be cool to use for no more than one atmosphere. He ll have to take a dive course too. I guess its using the top as buoyancy and balance. When they want too surface, open the tanks, displace the water and....surface.
I wonder how a rip tide, or underwater current would affect its buoyancy. If it goes upside down, is it game over? It must have bouyancy bags in there. And some big batteries too keep an attitude.
Still its cool as hell.

@@michaelbrownlee9497 It's a submersible, not a submarine. The bottom is still open to sea pressure. Yes you still have to worry about compression. Technically, it can go deeper than 120 feet., but you can't without special gear, and 120 feet is pushing it. There really is not enough space inside to allow for the needed special gear. It's just a snorkel shell you sit in. You breath what air is in the bubble that gets compressed as you go deeper and the water level inside goes up. Then of course you also need to worry about the seals that prevent your battery and limited electronics from being exposed to sea water finding it's way in at the higher pressures. Venting too much air into the space could cause the craft to go to the surface too fast, so, yes decompression sickness is an issue you should be insanely aware of.

Holy cow. What an amazing commitment. As soon as your sub guy said it was just like diving. Yeah, annual gear check, total life support. Plus all the support costs. Buddy, you bought yourself a money pit. (Which could be amazing, and I have my own diving money pits, so not knocking it.)
