    John could talk about how he ties his shoes and he would still have us completely hooked. Thanks for these great videos.

      I’d listen to that shit for hours. “I’m sorry John, can you cover the double knot again please?”

      I almost can hear smoke coming out of that cymbal, like when a piece of wood is burning in the fireplace.

    Ending this series with Spizzichino is the cherry on top. Thank you John and MDS for doing this, we cymbalholics are deeply appreciative! :D

      Yes!!! I was thinking the same thing, I wonder if John knows about Spizzichino (which clearly he does) & to actually bring a spizz cymbal is beyond incredible. 💯🙌👌🎉

    Mr. John Riley, I’ve watched all four parts of the video and I enjoyed all of the cymbals. A couple of them more so than the others, still, I liked all of them. I’d be happy to have any of them in my possession and to play. I particularly liked your playing. Your touch, your left hand comping as well as some of the permeated cymbal rhythms were truly marvelous to hear. Thank you for your artistry and demonstrations.

    As others have said I could listen to John talk about and play ride cymbals for hours. Great series. I too am a ride cymbal nut. I just love a great ride cymbal and as John says they just make you go sit at the kit, again and again.

    That cymbal sounds great. Reminded me of the sound Elvin Jones gets out of his ride cymbal.

    Amazing. And it's true, with age, cymbals' sound mature. Beautiful.

    Wow, what a great video!!! Thanks so much for sharing your collection and your insights into making music!!!
    On a side note: I just received the 2088g Philly Joe Jones cymbal that you demo’d a few days ago. It’s the finest cymbal I own!

    The voice of jazz and so, the quest for the perfect cymbal. You could wind up with a basement full of these pies before you realize...that every one you discovered and bought sound very similar. :-) I think you have a sound in your head that you search for, and you keep finding it, over and over again. But you never admit you found it. Sound is the goal, and like an audiophile with audio equipment, you keep trying to improve it. But they sure are fun to collect and play.

    Dear John, this is a great series and I enjoyed watching it. Just one comment from my point of view as a materials scientiest: metals, including bronze, do NOT have a molecular structure or contain molecules in any way (3:14). They do have an "atomic structure", which refers to the arrangement of the atoms on the smallest unit scale, and they have a "microstructure", which refers to the arrangement of grains and defects on a somewhat larger scale. Both of these are affected by the hammering, heat treatments and quenches during the production, and due to playing and resting they may change a bit further, eventually leading to the final mature sound of the cymbal. But all this has nothing to do with molecules ;-)

    • @robertalbiston7822
      @robertalbiston7822 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps there is molecular arrangement with differing densities and tensions throughout the cymbal that subtly shift over time and conditions?

    • @himatic
      @himatic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertalbiston7822 thanks for your answer. But no, there just aren't any molecules and accordingly no moleculare arrangement. Its all happening in the microstructure.

      Probably does 70s bodybuilding routines. I bet he'd do like 5 sets of 20 reps of Arnold dumbbell overhead presses with 25 pound dumbbells. He might even do old school barbell training. Doesn't look like a weak guy.
