Great video! Interesting to hear about John bringing a reference cymbal when listening to a new cymbal in an unfamiliar setting. I’ve struggled to hear cymbals away from my kit and rehearsal space. “Sounds” like that’s a normal experience!
I visited Memphis Drum Shop last week while I was on vacation from New York. Been an online customer since 2009. Jim Petit, Chris Pat Bounds, and Porter couldn’t have been more hospitable and kind. Very interesting video. I was not loving any of the cymbals, but merely because I like a little less wash and a little more cut (my favorite Zildjian Ride is the A Custom Projection). But, I enjoyed seeing John test and compare and assess - the expertise just comes through. And, even though they are not for me, they are beautiful cymbals!! Thanks for the video!
If your cymbal is lacking definition use a hickory stick, if it's too bright pour some maple syrup on it
Great point! Maple is a softer wood (less dense than Hickory) while Hickory is a harder wood. Different tapers and beads of the stick will also change the overall attack and the following bouquet underneath.

@@rbae to be fair, Zildjian is not the same as it was in the 60s. They still make some great stuff like in this video but plenty bad as well.
