*I like the old style Echo Dot because it's small also **Newest.Technology**, gives out decent sound and doesn't take up a lot of shelf space if you want to put it on beam in the workshop or shed.*
just to let you know that you dont have to wait a few seconds after saying the wake word (Alexa) you can just say alexa and imidiatly ask it to do something unless your internet is 2g
When Amazon first came out with the Echo I scoffed. What would someone need that expensive thing for? We all have smart phones. But after watching this video and having recently come into a $50 gift card I figured what do I have to lose in getting an Echo Dot? Well, I am just blown away by this little device! I have it set up with my Hue bulbs, Nest thermostat and the TP-Link outlet I got on a whim. So far it has worked flawlessly and I am very pleased. Thanks! :)
Happy the review helped! That's pretty much how I felt about these kind of devices as well and then I received one and was amazed at how much it does for $50.
Tech Uploaded Yea, it works very well. I have set it up with my salt lamp (basically an accent lamp) to turn it on and off. The only thing I wish it would do is to also handle dimming. That, or if Philips or LIFX would sell a nightlight sized LED bulb for use in the lamp. I think I'm getting spoiled. :)
I really enjoy using the echo with smart outlets. I use them in my living room for all the components in my entertainment center. I can say one command and everything I need to start using my media center turns on all at once.
I've been tempted by those smart outlets. They, of course, keep coming up in my Amazon recommended list now that they know I own an Echo, haha. Glad to hear they are working out well for you!
Do you always have to have your Cell Phones Blue Tooth Transmitter On? which as you know drains your phones battery fairly fast,,,Thats one of my concerns PLEASE Let ME KNOW? Love your Video vary helpful and you aren't afraid to take some time to lay out some great detail, :-) THANK YOU
Tech Uploaded thanks for the quick response. I was afraid they'd force you to use some kind of Amazon app. good to hear theyll let you tap into Google calendar.
I really am interested in buying one of these but I don't see the answer I need. Everyone is doing the same review....play music, turn on the lights, asking for at-the-moment sports/news update. Blah blah blah. (yawn) Can Echo/Alexa truly automate your lights without you being present to give a command? How about, "Alexa, set my outside lights to come on at dusk." Then leave for work. Wouldn't it be nice to come home to an already-lit home? Or, setting a preference of "Alexa, when I unlock my front door, automatically turn on my foyer lights and living room lights". True automation is without prompting. Oh another one....Telling her to set your thermostat is no biggy, impress me by showing I don't have to think about it. Can Alexa work with a compatible thermostat and set a wake, leave, return and sleep schedule without having mess with the actual thermostat interface? Home automation is supposed to bring about energy efficiency too. Can you please tell me if you tried these? Does this require third party If That Then This services? How is that set up?
Nope. You can use it without having Amazon Prime. The only thing Prime gives you is some exclusive deals from time to time that you can access from the Dot but that's all.
Have a question if you don't mind. Planning on getting a dot soon, was wondering if I could: tell alexa to to play a channel on tune-in radio and set it on a timer for when I go to sleep at night. Tune-in app stand-alone does have this function. Also, If I can do this and set volume to low for listening, will it affect the alarms volume? Thanks so much, mike!
Mike ... hi. yes you can tell her to play tune-in stations: "alexa play Absolute 80s on Tune-in" works fine. yes, there is a sleep timer: "alexa play ocean sounds for 30 minutes" works fine. great for falling asleep to. if something is playing already: "alexa stop playing this after 20 minutes" works fine. there are loads of alarm tones, the alarm volume is set independently of the music and voice volumes. so you can go sleep to gentle sounds and wake up to full volume alarm. configure the alarm tone and volume by the app, and alarm times, repeats, snooze, confirmations and cancellations can also be set by voice. you can see and edit alarms from the app too if you want a visual confirmation. hope this answers your questions.
dukedilly79 I got mine from Home Depot. The bulbs are $14.00 per bulb, they are suppose to last 23 years if you just burn them 3 hours a day, lol, but we know we will burn them more than that. You are gonna love it.
Hi Chris , thanks for the video, its going to help me with some of my xmas shopping :-) maybe you can help me with this , sorry I know it's off topic , I recently purchased a Strix GTX 1070 and upgraded from a GTX 970 FTW . ATM im using ASUS GPU tweak 2 , but im looking for something more like NZXT Cam or Precision X or MSI afterburner on that GPU ? sry for the noob question just checking if its ok to use NZXT Cam or Precision X or MSI afterburner @ the same time with a ASUS GPU Tweak 2, im trying to monitor my system while in game but being able to pick what I want to see like GPU temp GPU fan speed & CPU temp any ideas .... ty... :-)
I've never had any problems using Precision X with my ASUS GTX cards. I just usually install the Nvidia drivers that you can get direct from them for whatever card I have and then use Precision X or Afterburner for the overclocking.
Warning, don't use good earphones when watching the video, his microphone is too good you can hear him swallow his spit and make gross sounds that everybody in the world makes, you can just hear it too good xD eck

Also, I've been thinking about picking up one of those outlet adapters to try out with the Echo. Glad to hear they work well with it!

My Echo Dot has a huge Latency issue with both Bluetooth and the Audio Jack

Can you use with bluetooth hearing aid?
Do you always have to have your Cell Phones Blue Tooth Transmitter On?

Love your Video vary helpful and you aren't afraid to take some time to lay out some great detail, :-) THANK YOU
it doesn't connect to you phone via bluetooth, it uses wifi connection. The bluetooth can connect to a speaker.
You get a thumbs-up from me just for wearing your "I voted" sticker. 👍
Is it worth getting the 2nd gen echo or should I just get the dot if I’ll only be listening to music via external speakers
Very informative and helpful. Thanks!
You might have said it but what speakers are you using ?? Great video! Thanks!
do you need to be a prim member to use it?
I live in the middle east . So does echo dot works with 220-240 volts or only 110v-120v volts ? I've never got clear answer yet . Can you help ?
Hi...great video...my question is this...does the Dot have to be plugged in all the time?
Joy Sanservino yes, it does.
by calendar, do you mean Google calendar? or another calendar app?
I have mine set to my Google calendar but there is a setting in the Alexa app to set your calendar.
Tech Uploaded thanks for the quick response. I was afraid they'd force you to use some kind of Amazon app. good to hear theyll let you tap into Google calendar.
