When connecting this at your home do you have to have a bunch of smart plugs for each separate part of your home like lights or just one to connect to all your lights or tv
If these were say 10% of the current price I may try one out, but as is, I really don't see the point. To the people that love them, what exactly are you using them for that makes you love them?
For my family, alarms, timers, weather, news, music, even jokes (7 year old loves it).
These kind of gadgets are really primarily useful for those times where you don't want to pull out your phone, or you'd rather just interact with your voice.
Walking in the door with an armload of groceries, you can tell it to adjust your smart thermostat. Cutting up chicken for dinner, you can tell it to set a timer for whatever you just put in the oven, etc.
***** Perhaps, I'd change my mind if I had one and used it for a while, but there is nothing there my phone doesn't do, and that's rarely more than a few feet away from me. I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything, I just totally fail to see the point of these devices ;^/
Nope, you're absolutely right. It's not for everyone. Would I have bought the original Echo if I didn't make videos? Probably not. For $50 (or less when bundling), I would have considered it.
It's a first world solution to a first world problem, and I love it. :)
I think $50 is a wonderful price to try this out. It sure beats the $700 + price I paid and I am still paying for my Smartphone. It does a lot of the things my phone could do without me having to use my hands. Whatever I want my phone to do I first have to pick it up and press something to get it to do it and that applies to all Smartphones. With the Echo all I have to do is say her name "Alexa" and she responds.

Just got this for Christmas. Can you carry it around once it's charged and use it in different rooms? Or is that why people have purchased 2 or 3?
It must be plugged in at all times. Unless you purchase those new portable Batteries that are specifically made for the Dot. The Dot is like a VCR or DVR box only works while plugged in does not have a rechargeable battery inside. Fremo has partnered with Amazon and sells exclusively on their site a portable battery made for the Echo Dot 2 called EVO. It is $35.
Hey jordan quick quesiton .when you ask it to play a gone where is the song comming from? the internet or your iphone ,or what? is it charging me money to hear songs?
By default it is pulling music from Amazon's Music Store I think ti is called Amazon Prime Music. I have an Amazon Prime Account, but you don't need to be a Prime Member to gain access. No you are not being charged because it is free but it has a very limited library of music. You can however, get Amazon's Music Unlimited subscription and get their full library. If you have a Pandora Account or a Spotify Premium account you can enable those as well. It also plays music from TuneIn Radio and iHeart Radio. I have all but Spotify enabled on mine because I am not going to pay for Spotify. I already have a Pandora Plus subscription. I wish Alexa could hook up to my Sirius XM account because I am paying for that too. Maybe one day it will be in an update to the software.

Yes, unless you buy a battery to attach to it. I've done a couple of videos on batteries for the Echo Dot
So frustrating setting it up!
I have so many questions. What did you plug into ?, What is the power source? Does it have to be plugged in all the time? Does my phone have to be on all the time or can it run through WIFI only? My mom wants one as her vision is failing. Her phone is 4 years old and she does not want a new one. It would have to be set up through my phone and then I would be leaving.
It is powered by the included microUSB cable and the wall plug (Echo Dot -> microUSB cable -> Wall power adapter). You can set it up using the Alexa app on your phone, but it can run on a wifi network. For example, I have wifi here in my home, so the Echo Dot connects to my home wireless network and is available all the time.

Can we get a little security minded and talk about the implications of having a device in your home that listens to everything you say and send it to Amazon?
I am not worried about that at the moment. My understanding is that devices like these are only listening for the Wake Word. In this case "Alexa, Amazon or Echo" are the wake words. Once the Echo hears that it starts to listen for further instructions after a couple of seconds and you don't ask it to do anything it goes back to just waiting for the Wake Word. Everything you say to it once you have said the Wake Word can be seen in the Alexa App so you know what is being recorded and what is not.

I find the dot2 works much better with a good bandwidth, as soon as I start downloading 'ahem' stuff, it tends to struggle a bit and loses its connection. It's priced aggressively which is good and works well with my tp-link WiFi sockets which are also good value compared with others.

Mysteriously my set-up stops at the final set-up page in the app "Echo Dot Setup" and that page is blank and nothing happens after that. I tried the procedure at least ten times via my samsung cell phone and via my HP computer but non see the Dot.
I have had a full size Echo for a long time and it works fine... I noticed on your video your phone had some kind of wi-fi button that showed the available devices. I don't have that on my Samsung.
I got my Echo Dot today. Everything is working fine, except my hotspot wont work. The Alexa Echo Dot keeps saying "Unable to connect to Wi-fi hotspot." There is only wifi OR hotspot. Can someone help me

The Dot speaker sounded crappy to me so I went with the full size Echo. They both take up the same amount of countertop space but the Echo speaker sounds 100X better. I couldn't be bothered with an external speaker that takes up more counter space. Thanks for the review Jordan, very helpful.

After i say goodnight to my Amazon echo 2nd generation, can i shout the speaker off. It will mess up my connections.
Note to self....when watching a video about the echo dot make sure I turn off my echo dot. Every time Jordan asks Alexa sometime my Dot thinks I am giving it the command.

How do you connect the dot with speakers etc
Use the Alexa app on your phone/tablet, select the Echo Dot under settings, go to Bluetooth, and have it scan for speakers that are in pairing mode. Once you've paired it through the app, it will automatically re-pair, but if it doesn't, you can say "Alexa, pair my bluetooth speaker"
Thanks for the video. Can someone please answer this. Can you ask the device anything at all like the amazon echo or google home? Is there the bing search engine in it? Basically, is there only specific questions I can ask it or can I treat it pretty much like a google search. I can't find an answer to this really. Thanks,

I remember reading an article by someone that made a case for why it is not a good thing that Google Home gives you an answer for anything you ask it. The article said in a Google Search you get many possible answers and if you were doing the search on a computer you don't always go with the first hit that comes up. Sometimes what you are looking for is not even on the first page of results. Well Google Home gives you the top most result from a search that comes on the fist page whether that is the correct answer or not does not matter. This was the argument the person used for why Amazon is not doing it like that. I am not sure if that is the real reason but is very plausible. It makes sense too. I have conducted many a search on Google and have in a lot of cases not chosen the link that comes up first at the top of the page and in some other cases not chosen any of the results on the first page at all. I have scrolled through the other pages of results looking for what I wanted. Currently neither device is equipped to really think like a Human and discern what it is you are really looking for. Now the Google Home does do a better job of following up on questions you have asked and that is where they beat the Echo. Hopefully Amazon will figure this out.

No, the Echo Dot does not have a battery. You can purchase a battery for it ( videos about them on my channel) but on its own, it must be plugged in to work

The Echo Dot doesn't have a battery in it, so it doesn't charge. It has to stay plugged in all the time. You can buy an external battery for it, like this: th-cam.com/video/gdC-AO7BXR8/w-d-xo.html, but the only Amazon Echo item that comes with a battery is the Amazon Tap.
I wish there was an instruction booklet for troubleshooting, I'm having problems connecting to the Wi-Fi
Gloria Giefer my advice would be to hold down the action button until the orange ring light starts spinning then go to your alexa app and go to settings then click on echo dot and redo the WiFi setup and your echo dot should work I hope this helped

Nope. Technically you don't even need a phone or tablet, just a wifi-connected laptop or desktop. You can go to alexa.amazon.com/spa/index.html#new-oobe and set up the device there.
