I use a 1982 (or prior) penny and gun oil, lubing the rusted area and rubbing the penny on the barrel till the rust comes off, works perfectly.

Have you ever tried the water boil rust converting method to remove the “patina” and get back to the blued finish? It’s pretty impressive.

I've watched lot of Anvil videos on that but am concerned what that might do to the internal parts of these sheet metal toy guns that can't be reached with a carding brush. Firebluing does create an oxide coat on the interior surfaces so that's a plus. I should bite the bullet and experiment with it.
