One of the best ballads ever made. Countless covers of this one but nobody beats ABBA, not even close. In terms of vocal delivery, arrangement and production!
This song was very personal for the group, since the two couples of this band was separated at this period who the band wrote the song and the song talk about the divorce of the two couples. It's was lyrically very intimate. This was in fact a 80's song, recording and released in 1980. And was thier final major hit in US and also thier final top 10 single in US, reaching n.8 in march 1981 and was since a iconic single of thier catalogue. Depist the group continued to the rest of the world to produced few hits until the group broked up in 1982 after this song, the group didn't have major singles in US after ''The Winner Take It All'' because also the musical changes with the arrival of the New Wave at this period and took more this music. The others singles after this song only gained impact with the years in US with the years, notably with the released with the ''Greatest Hits Gold'' in 1992.
No, only Björn and Agnetha were separated when they recorded 'The Winner Takes it All' (1980)... Frida and Benny were still together. They separated before the recording of The Visitors, and the song 'When All Is Said and Done' (1981), with lyrics by Björn and sung by Frida, was written with hers and Benny's divorce in mind.
Bjorn and Agnetha were practically seperated since December '78 the year that Benny and Frida got married.Song was written in the summer of 1979 with the working title ''The story of my life",until it also got instrumentalwise re-arranged and finally released in the summer of '80.Frida and Benny got divorced almost 3 years after the song was written, in 1981.Their break up song was 'When all is said and done" on which even Bjorn asked some kinda 'approval' to involve their personal story in the lyrics of this song.Frida even stated 'all my sadness was captured in that song".
hello again Empress , so nice to see you return with more ABBA songs ABBA in the begining two swedish couples, meet in 1969: Agnetha (blonde singer) & Björn (guitarist songwriter) Benny (pianist songwriter) & Anni Frida (brunette singer) Agnetha & Björn married in 1971, with two childrens Benny and Frida married in 1978, withouth own childrens both couples separated before ABBA breakup in 1982: Agnetha & Björn at end of 1978 Benny & Frida at begin 1981 "The winner takes it all" (1980) is one of the Best Songs by ABBA and the Most sad and emotional too The best lyrics by the guitarist Björn and the greatest performing with the amazing Interpretation of the blonde singer Agnetha Fältskog and her soprano voice The lyrics is a fiction about a divorce, it is not about Their real life, although it is obviously influenced by Their own experiences, and the realization of the legal divorce between Agnetha & Björn in the middle of 1980, even though They were no longer a couple or lived together more than a year and half ago, end of 1978 In fact, the song was more nearly in time to the split of Benny & Frida as a couple, only a few months later "The winner takes it all" return ABBA to the Top of charts, gives ABBA their eighth #1 in UK after two years and half Also was the fourth and last Top10 to ABBA in U.S (pick at #8 in 1981) , and #1 in US Adult Contemporary too "The winner takes it all" was voted the Best ABBA song by the British fans, and is the favourite ABBA song to Agnetha and now in the new Voyage concerts at London that begins exactly one year before, the encore song is... 🔥🔥 Another one of my ABBA favorites. Empress, you mentioned it before so I must reiterate about how ABBA was making full videos(promotional) way back then.
I know what I'm about to say is cheesy as heck, but this was the song that broke my grief when I split with with my partner back in 1998. I was numb for a few months after it happened, and when this song began playing, despite the fact I'd heard it hundreds of times before, the dam walls came down and out spilled my grief. From that moment onwards I began to move on. Thanks for reacting to it, Empress. It brings back memories.
Out of YT Jail! A classic ABBA song, and this time I didn't request it. LOL. I think the 'winner' technically, from the lyrics, would be Björn, since the song is sung by Agnetha and it's loosely based on their breakup. But he wrote the lyrics, so perhaps in his mind, he was writing it with Agnetha being the 'winner' in his mind, and the irony is, she's the one singing it. As far as real life, Björn quickly remarried after he and Agnetha divorced, so if I had to guess, he'd definitely be the winner. I think the intent with the video was that all three of the others are happy, but Agnetha is alone. I could see that being interpreted as Frida 'winning', but the lyrics seem to be about an ex-partner, not a love rival.
Both of the relationships between the couples and band were over by this point. I LOVE all their music and have since I about 7 or 8, so for over 40+ years. My 19 yr old son loves the Mama Mia movies and now my 2 yr old granddaughter likes cuddling up with Nonnie and watching them. I've got her listening to Olivia Newton -John, Abba and a few others. Considering one of my sons would only go to sleep if I sang Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird, you can say I've always tried to keep them open to ALL GENRES of music and movies.
***ABBA (CHART) TRIVIA TIME!!!*** ...aw, don't cry, Agnetha...(5:41)...I got the charts..... - ...well, since ABBA has 34,357,952 Gay Fans that LOVE this tune, I'm sure they'll give the trivia to Empress ....I'LL, just leave the Top Ten..... *POP* : 10. @@graphiquejack Oh yes, but the members of ABBA all said that ''The Winnier Takes It All'' was very intimate and personal.
