I grew up in Southern California and I used to go to Knott's at least once a year. I also had a season pass in high school and my best friend and I would jump on over to Knott's whenever we could. The last time I went to the park was before Hang Time opened. Montezuma's Revenge was the first loop I had ever done and the first roller coaster I ever went backwards on, so it definitely holds a soft spot for me. With that in mind, my second and third favorites are Silverbullet and Ghost Rider. It honestly just depends on the day which one I prefer. Xcelerator is my favorite. My record for most rides in a single day was close to 30 back in the day.

    • @vekomaboomerang4094
      @vekomaboomerang4094 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Old Knott's was better during the 90's. The Knott family sold the park to Cedar Fair in 1997. HangTime pays tribute to Boomerang with its Cobra Roll. I rode the coaster on its grand opening in May, great ride. I always told the employees that they should add another track to Xcelerator and have the trains race against each other, calling Xcelerator Drag Racers. That would solve the 2 hour wait for the people. Montezuma's Revenge, Boomerang, Jaguar and GhostRider are my top favorites, now including HangTime. Can't wait til the park reopens again. Check out Jaguar and the Parachute ride videos from 1996.

The last time I visited Knotts was back in 2005, when Silver Bullet was still the new coaster. So I haven't been on Pony Express, Sierra Sidewinder, Coast Rider, and Hangtime yet. I also never did go on Windjammer Surf Racers since there was at least a 12 year gap between my first visit and 2005. But I have been on most of the coasters you mentioned on this list, including Wacky Soap Box Racers. I was scared of roller coasters when I was a kid, but I LOVED that coaster. I would probably have it ranked in my top 3, along with Ghostrider and Silver Bullet.

  • @johncastro39

I actually rode soapbox racers when it was motorcycles instead of the boxed cars. At the time it was really cool for Knott's. But the reason it was changed to the boxcars happened to my brother. He didn't get hurt or anything but when we rode back into the station he was sideways on the cycle only being held on by the strap belt. I think it was called steeple chase so maybe it was horses we rode on. Too far back to remember. Thank you for giving Knott's a good video. Knott's is so different than most parks. Family friendly yet fun for all ages. I'm 58 yrs old but still ride coasters. I'm not an old 58 I'm still young at heart. I'm also an ex gymnast and can still do most of my "old" routines so that might explain me. Once again your videos keep me going out to keep riding! Peace and respect to you and your beautiful new family!! ❤

I went to Knotts (and Magic Mountain) pretty much every year in the late '70s and early '80s when we'd drive to LA to visit my grandparents. I remember the Corkscrew when it was the first loop coaster. It was always a short but fun ride. I also remember riding the Wacky Soapbox Racers during that time. My last trip to Knotts was in 2012 or 2013 when I got to ride Ghostrider and Xcelerator, both of which I enjoyed a lot (especially Ghostrider, which I thought was one of the best wooden coasters I've ever been on).

Silver Bullet is #2 at the park. Hear me out.
There are two types of B+M inverts. Those that use the inverted trains to pull intense G's to rip your feet off and those that use the inverted trains to offer unobstructed scenic tours of the park. Silver Bullet is clearly the latter. While the forces are fun, and that turn after the first loop is fantastic and unique if understated, it's really about just being in the front seat and enjoying a smooth (smoother than the rear) entertaining tour of the park. Knott's is one of the most beautifully themed coaster parks in America and Silver Bullet gives you wonderful views that really can't be matched by any other B+M invert, other than Great Bear at Hersheypark, which seems to me to be an inferior version of Silver Bullet. For what it is, Silver Bullet might actually be the best roller coaster of it's kind (scenic tour B+M inverted coaster) in the best environment (Over the Knott's lake and footpaths) for that type of experience.

Sierra sidewinder was intense! I’m so glad I rode it.
Coast rider was ok. It has a couple fun moments. As a tall person, the shin guards are difficult. On my second ride, I talked the ride operator into giving me just a little extra room, and it was better.

There are some Eurofighter models with lengths around 1100 feet (e.g. Hydrus at Casino Pier NJ) which are probably the shortest non-kiddie coasters

I saw one of the comments mention this one, but I have to add my thoughts. I have been going to Knott’s since the 1960s. Before Xcelerator... Before Windjammer... Before Wacky Soap Box Racers...There was the Motorcycle Chase on that plot of land in the Roaring 20s Airfield. It utilized the same track as the Soap Box Racers, but after multiple injuries, the bikes were replaced with the soap box racers. I remember my parents (who were not coaster enthusiasts) getting on the attraction with us four kids in the summer of 1977. The Motorcycle Chase scared them quite a bit, but for me, it was one of the best experiences of my life up to that point. Over 40 years later, I still think fondly of my ride on the Motorcycle Chase.

Sometimes I wonder if Knott's should just go bonkers with smaller rides since they've come a long way. I know the rumors of the Giga but they could do something like bringing the Soap Box Derby Racers back since S&S reintroduced the steeplechase, they could also do a Chance Hyper GTX, Skyrocket 2, an El-Loco, maybe a Raptor? There's alot of great small thrilling coasters out there for smaller parks now.

Cedar Fair needs to expand the park. Rumor is that everything backstage between Ghost Rider and Calico Rapids (including Mystery Lodge) will be removed for a major park expansion. I am guessing that in addition to some flat rides, a new coaster will be placed next to Ghost Rider and will also go over Grand Avenue. I am hoping for an RMC.

As a Knott's local my entire life who has ridden every single coaster they've had (though I only got to Corkscrew at Silverwood), here's how they stack up for me...
    1. Xcelerator
    2. GhostRider
    3. HangTime
    4. Silver Bullet
    5. Sierra Sidewinder
    6. Montezooma's Revenge
    7. Corkscrew
    8. Pony Express
    9. Windjammer Surf Racers
    10. Jaguar!
    11. Timberline Twister
    12. Boomerang
    13. Wacky Soap Box Racers (my memory of this is pretty vague, but I remember it being very unique though incredibly tame)
    14. Coast Rider
As for what's next, I could see a Mack Launch similar in scale to Copperhead Strike fitting in really nicely, but with the pandemic I expect it will be several years before we even see signs of something big coming to the park.

i would love to visit Knott's again to ride Ghostrider and really enjoy it, because the first time I rode it I had to piss so bad i couldn't enjoy the ride as much
Sierra Sidewinder tho, probably the best spinning coaster ive been on. That low-to-the-ground helix is insane and the track is almost banked fully sideways, so if your car enters the helix the right way you feel like your mere inches from the rocks at the bottom. That and the forces are pretty damn intense for a family ride. It's TONS of fun.

For Montezooma's Revenge, I can see it getting a refurbishment like Psyche Underground at Walibi Belgium, which got a new magnetic launch system if the maintainance costs become too high.

Agreed, Ghostrider is the GOAT. Done it 100's of times. Had a Season pass back in middle school 06/07, used to go every other weekend and ride it non stop. We'd go back row and put out hands inside out shirt so that we could put them up or hold on.

I believe Boomerang, Silver Bullet, and Xcelerator were all featured in the short-lived Cartoon Network game show "BrainRush" that aired in 2009 during the networks notorious "CN Real" block (aka, the beginning of the end), which also gave us other live action shows like "Destroy, Build, Destroy" and "Dude, What Would Happen?"

I rode Sierra Sidewinder in the back 4 times but only had it spinning good enough the 1st time I rode it. That's unfortunate because If I'd know that I'd never have ridden it again after that 1st time. Ghostrider in the back seat is the best ride in the park hands down and was my last thrill ride of 2019. It's the best woodie on the west coast

I would count Motor Cycle Chase as it's own coaster and include it in the list. The seating, on motorcycle trains, was similar to Pony Express. The hills, combined with restraints, caused many injuries. Sadly, I did not ride it until after the profiles of the hills were flattened out. The third incarnation was the re-theme to the soap box cars and new ride vehicles. The layout was somewhat tame, but maximized space as it wound around the Motor Race.
I believe the Cycle Chase/Motor Race attractions of the Knott's Roaring '20s Airfield represent part of Knott's heyday. Theming at Knott's in the mid-late 1970's was exceptional!
