I had my first ride on Blue Streak this week. I expect an old wooden coaster to be rough, but I wasn't prepared for just how painful it would be.
American Eagle is bumpy, but it doesn't hurt because the cars are so wide open, there's nothing to bump up against so it's not bad.
I've never had a rough ride on Hang Time and I ride it a lot.

These things can be weirdly specific to the person. To me, Untamed at Canobie Lake Park is one of the smoothest coasters I've ever ridden. But I hear people calling it rough pretty frequently. I think the transitions are maybe a bit whippy and if you're short you'll bang your head on the restraints.

American Eagle is on of my favorites. And yes, with wooden rollercoasters (woodies) you expect some bumpiness and roughness. That's part of the fun of riding them There's a junior coaster (Rollo Coaster) at Idlewild Park in Pennsylvania that delivers a surprisingly rough but fun ride.

Kingda ka is also rough because the launch track isnt as supported as top thrill dragsters.

  • @MinkyBoodle44
    @MinkyBoodle44 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

So from what I heard at IAAPA this last year, the main reason that the Skyline coasters were so rough is because the amount of heat required to bend RMC’s single rail track ended up causing each piece of track to warp. They’ve since come up with a heatless track-shaping system, and I’m hoping that this means we’ll see better rides from them in the future.

The reason Ka’s launch is shakier than Dragster’s is because Ka’s is more elevated than Dragster’s. The track shakes and sways more on KK, leading to a shakier ride experience

If you think it's bad, ride Green Lantern at six flags great adventure. the layouts are very similiar, with the exception GL has been transported, and still has the stand up trains. So lots of headbanging along with broken bodies on a B&M that's supposed to look attractive to park goers from the parking lot. Wish they'd get rid of it or send it off/sell and get something like steel curtain at kennywood.

Then did Swarm 6 times (rough b&m), Nemesis Inferno (2 times glass smooth), then back to Saw. Back row was fine but front row killed my head so much that we had to leave the park! For a 4 hour drive back to Leeds. Gerstlauer need to sort this out as I keep hearing the same thing about this and the Smiler. Love both rides but the roughness is intense. Great video by the way.

    I've got a few:
Mystery Mine - Okay, I put it in the "surprisingly smooth" category because I thought it'd be rougher from what I heard people say. But it still belongs in the "surprisingly rough" category because it shouldn't cause headbanging if it's still relatively new. The front row does this more than the back. I didn't find it bad though, and I really like the ride. Just a bit surprising that it has headbanging at all.
Mine Blower - Of course. This ride is weirdly rough, I guess because it was assembled quickly. Not sure what they can do to smooth it out. I still like it quite a lot, it's got fun elements, but I can't double ride it, I have to wait a bit. I usually come off with a headache that goes away soon. When your brand new coaster is rough you know you did something wrong.
Cheetah - Back when I rode this in 2019, I didn't know when it opened, who built it, and it's reputation. Even now, I wouldn't have guessed it'd be rough. Built in 2001 by CCI, and not really any reputation (being a park that a lot of enthusiasts haven't visited/don't talk about), you think it'd be good. I thought it'd be fun like White Lightning and Mine Blower, but NO. This ride's only good parts were the lift, drop, and roll into the station. Every valley was bumpy, every hill caused jackhammering, and every turn the train shook so it felt like it was going to fall apart. I trust the safety of the park, but this ride would be the one coaster I'd call unsafe if I needed to. My last ride wasn't so bad-- the key is probably to staple yourself so you bump with the train, not against it. It was still pretty bad. In 2009, they spent $1.3 million to renovate the ride and make it better., but I guess that didn't even save it. Now it's closed, and I'm hoping for "Iron Cheetah" or something like that. RIP Cheetah anyways, I will always have memories...
Kumba - Sorry, gotta trash Kumba again. I got one ride in the back last year in December, and it was awful. It sounds like Wildfire from Chris's descriptions of it. Every valley had a rattley roughness that exists on most B&M's, but usually subtle. Not Kumba, though. I got a lasting headache which hurt on every intense moment on Tigris, Montu, Kraken, and Mako, causing me to enjoy those rides less than I otherwise would have. I hear people love this ride, and yes, the layout is pretty good, with lots of intensity and whip. Maybe it's not so bad towards the front, or in another train, or on an inside seat. My dad rode it with me and didn't really feel any lasting roughness, and he's more prone to roughness than I am. I need a reride someday.
I didn't get to ride SheiKra as they were repainting it or something like that so whenever I go back, I'll be sure to submit my experience on it, as it seems split as to who thinks it's rough and who says it's smooth. I've rode Hang N Bangs Swamp Thing at Wild Adventures and Flying School at Legoland and they didn't seem so bad. I'm going to Six Flags Over Georgia soon so maybe one from there will get on here (or on the opposite video!)
EDIT - UPDATE: Been to Six Flags Over Georgia. Scream Machine wasn't as rough as I expected, but it was still bumpy (and pretty boring sadly). However,
Blue Hawk - I know this got some retracking and new restraints as an improvement and better reputation. But I guess I expected a B&M, when it's a Vekoma. Yeah, it's shaky. Not very painful, but rougher than expected.
EDIT 2: Rerode Kumba and I like it WAY better now! It's still rough, but very fun.

As someone who rode Mineblower 2-3 months after it's opening I can definitively say it is the most a coaster has ever hurt me. It was really rough; not quite the roughest I've been on (that honor goes to the Wild One at SFA, although 2017/2018 American Eagle and Roar were both close), but made more painful by the way the restraint came down on my waist (plus probably the fact I was wearing a belt. It was just full pressure on my waist on a rough coaster where the restraint was shoving me into the side of my seat). So yeah, I agree with you there.

5:40 does actually make a whole lot of sense. ElToroRyan covered that in one of his problematic coasters videos. The problem with kingda kas launch track is that it is inclined steeper than Top Thrill dragsters, thus the end of it is a lot higher off the ground. The supports underneath the launch track are misssing any lateral supporting, which causes the track to wobble side to side insanely when a train gets launched over it.

I think any coaster's individual ride experience has a lot to do with the condition of the wheels. Whether the outer layer is polyurethane or nylon, a coaster wheel with deteriorated wheel tread can make or break the smoothness of a ride. Of course, the track profile makes a big difference too. Thoughts from your list:
Hydra- This coaster has strange profiling. Combining that with wheels close to needing replacement tread can lead to a rough ride. Hydra isn't very good even when it's running smoothly--I always thought the pacing died off toward the end of the ride.
Mystery Mine- This coaster has strange profiling as well. It's almost too slow in some cases, which bangs your head around. I still enjoy riding this coaster.
Wildfire- Glass smooth for all my rides. This coaster runs nearly year-round so the ride experience likely depends on the maintenance schedule.
Skyrush- The forces are crazy. I can see how the wing seats could bounce. I always ride in the middle.
Family Hang & Bangs- Hot garbage, especially the one at Lagoon. These coasters have the exact same layout as Woodstock's Express and Flight of the Hippogriff at IOA. I can't explain why the inverted versions are so bad.
Desperado- Early 90s Arrow. Fun, but strange profiling and pacing.
    Windjammer- Togo.
Deja Vu/Goliath- I've only ridden the Vekoma trains and love that version of the ride. Smooth and intense.
Kingda Ka- So rough. Can't be explained.
SOB- I wanted off before the lift. Good riddance. I'm glad Banshee didn't appear on this list since I've only had really smooth rides. I love Banshee.
Hangtime- Never ridden, can't relate, other than agreeing with your comments on the other Gerstlaeur coasters on this list.
Mine Blower- never ridden, looks terrible.
Outlaw Run- Raw, intense ride with too much jackhammering. I was shocked.
Harley Quinn- Way too many wheels and axles. Too much to maintain and a lot can go wrong.
Shellraiser- Great coaster, too rough. See previous comments,
    Great content!

heres why some of these coasters are rough:
kingda ka - the reason why this is rough and dragster isn’t is because of a few reasons: the otsr restraints are higher up on the ride vs dragsters lap bars, which makes the trains more top heavy, which makes them much more prone to movement and therefore, roughness. also, ka’s launch track is much higher up towards the end compared to dragsters, and this shouldn’t be an issue, but the support structure isnt laterally braced, meaning the track will actually shake side to side
hangtime and tmnt takabisha - these coasters are both rough for the same reasons: the footers for the support structure in each ride is shallower than most coasters, especially on tmnt takabisha, because its footers are indoors and can only go so deep before it reaches the basement. this causes both rides, even when brand new, to have rough patches where the footers are lacking the most. i have also heard rumors that tmnt’s supports had to accommodate for the other coaster that weaves through its track, making some parts of the ride inadequately supported
mine blower - this coaster was hastily constructed, simple as that
