declan rice is a very traditional defensive midfielder. His work off the ball is world class, and he can also attack open spaces when presented. However, during build-up and when under pressure, he just isnt good at progressing the ball and often resorts to safe sideways passes. He rarely if ever passes the ball into the pockets where odegaard can operate and create chances. You could see the difference in our play when jorginho and partey started at the latter stages of the season. He is obviously a top class player for us, just no where near as crucial for us as odegaard is in my opinion.
Southgate takes top quality players and makes a shambles of a team out of them.

Picking in form players in their correct positions would be a good start. Gordon was surely the replacement for Rashford and hasn't started. Mainoo, Wharton and Gallagher were surely the Hendo/Phillips replacements and haven't started. No fit left backs. It's not like he's got a solid team selection just because he brought a couple of unknowns.
He could have also not been picking Phillips Henderson and Maguire the last year and given caps to new players.

You need to stop blaming the manager. Capello won the CL and did nothing. Sven was a top manager and did nothing with England too.
Your top players are all surrounded by intelligent foreign players at club level.
The problem is your development system. You have certainly caught up in terms of technical ability and sports science. But you are miles behind in terms of game intelligence, the ability to control a game and the momentum of it.
Youth development in the UK is still lacking despite the youth success they've had in recent years. At youth level game intelligence isn't a determining factor in winning tournaments as athleticism and technical ability takes over.
There is a reason why English coaches are not managing top clubs across Europe. The FA need to invest in Coach development at youth level.
When England do that, they will win tournaments.
Until then, England will continue to be out thought by countries that have a population far inferior. That is unacceptable. Stop blaming the manager and look at the national coaching curriculum. Why do think foreign coaches go to the UK to get their pro licence? Because it's easier to pass.
