In Japan, the interplay of foreign and local religions, coupled with historical dynastic changes, has led to ancient legends being passed down through generations. In Japan's Heian period, a dream led an emperor to commission a sword from renowned bladesmith Sanjo Munechika near Kyoto's Sanjo area. Munechika sought the help of his family deity, Inari Okami, at Inariyama. A divine child appeared, offering aid and transforming into a fox before disappearing into Inariyama.
Back home, Munechika built an altar, and soon, the divine child reappeared, transforming into the hammer Munechika needed. With divine assistance, Munechika crafted the sword, naming it "Kogitsune Maru," symbolizing prosperity and peace.
This tale, often depicted in Japanese Noh theatre, hints at the deep connection between foxes and Inari Deity. In ancient Japan, it was believed that achieving mastery in craft required divine intervention. Sanjo Munechika was a historical figure, with remnants of his work preserved in Kyoto's Sakyoku.
For those less familiar with Fushimi Inari, here's a brief overview: Located in Fushimi, Kyoto, it's one of Japan's oldest shrines, renowned for its thousands of torii gates. Situated at the base of Inariyama, it's part of the Inari faith. In ancient times, Inariyama was revered, and "inari" refers to rice, symbolizing harvest and abundance, worshipped as a deity.
