One of Lebanon’s biggest villages: Mtein
If you've ever wondered how a Lebanese village might have looked two or three hundred years ago, try a visit to Mtein where many old palaces and buildings survive.
Mtein's modern history dates back to the 15th century when people moved here from North Lebanon and the Houran. At the start of the 16th century, the Al-Lamaayeen Emirs took up residence in Mtein and built the palaces we see today. During Ottoman times the village played an influential role, especially under the Ottoman governors in the 19th century.
This village of about 6,000 people is proud of its grand architecture and historic past. In the old days, it had several silk factories where residents of Mtein and nearby villages worked. Today, however, thanks to the wealth of its vineyards, Mtein is a producer of arak.

Mtein, a gem in the Lebanese mountains. Delicious foods and beverages. And that majestic Cedar tree by the church!
@@ngno.fanclub In Old Beirut, as a kid in the 1950’s, I would ride the tramway on Rue Georges Picot (now John Kennedy) all the way to Bab Idriss, to buy manakeesh for the family’s Sunday morning breakfast, straight from the bakery. On the same Georges Picot, close to Nazlit Spears (now Phoenicia), I would treat myself to the best falafel wrap from the little joint called Ustaz il’san’aa استاذ الصنعة. And the daily, crunchy Kaakeh aasrouniyeh, displayed by the street vendor on his wooden tray, still warm from the bakery, by the Hotel Saint Georges, with a pinch of zaatar and extra summac thrown in, while watching people practicing ski nautique nearby, and kids showing off and taking turns to plunge from the Corniche into the sea below. That was Old Beirut!
