The Interview with Mrs. Rita Khoury (Hotel CEO & Chairman): Chtaura Park Hotel located in Bekaa Valley is a famous historical hotel where numerous prominent people including celebrities, politicians, and presidents stayed or visited. The hotel opened in 1957. Its location near Syrian border made it an ideal place to host several historical Arab conferences in the 1960's during Chamile Chamoun's presidency. Unfortunately, the hotel was severly damaged and closed during the civil war. In 1978, Mrs. Rita Khoury's father purchased the hotel during troubled times while there was shelling in the area. It was totally renovated and around 40 Phillipine workers were hired to work over 2 years in the renovation process. Mrs. Khoury renovated the rooms, but left the Arabesque style.
Anthony and Marc make several trips to Bekaa farmers: first trip was to Lama's lavender's plantation. She started it 2 years ago on her family's land in Chtaura. She extracts lavender essential oils at her distillery and sells dry buds of lavender. Marc explains that growing lavender does not need lots of water or pesticides, needs cold temperature, and best elevation to grow is at 400 m. Lama plans to open lavenderfarm.lb next year for visitors. Next stop was Al-Ahram coffee Roastery (started in1984) in Zahle's industrial city. They distribute various coffee blends to Bekaa area. The next stop was the village of Tarshish that focuses on walnuts and chestnuts food products, in addition to mouneh and all natural local honey. They make jams, creams and liquor from walnuts. You can order their homemade food products from Tarshish Cooperative by calling 03-518562. For honey requests call 03-531259. Marc ends his visit to Robinson Agri, leading producer of greenhouses, grafted vegetable plants, and organic certified seedlings in Bekaa Valley. Broccoli, kale, iceberg, Chinese cabbage are some of the produce we saw planted . Marc emphasizes the importance of source of the seed, certification of the seed, quality of the plant and Good Agriculture Practices maintained in agricultural. While Marc spent his time in agriculture, Anthony visited the Chef with 35 years of cooking experience at the hotel. The chef has only joined the hotel a year ago.
