Clearly Halep walked into court determined not to repeat Indian wells disaster match against Osaka again. She played each point with a vengeance and mentally broke Osaka which was exactly opposite of what happened at IW

this was a "lesson" match for naomi. you had better believe that halep prepared for this match and was coming into the match with the intention to thoroughly beat naomi. players know that naomi is a rising tennis star and so the incumbent top players are going to be more motivated than usual to not lose to naomi. naomi wants to be like serena but she has a way to go to match serena's mental toughness, but that's what it is going to take. she doesn't have to develop serena-like mental toughness tomorrow, but that is the direction to which she needs to strive.
from a technical perspective, halep is a much better mover on clay, but superior clay court movement was not what determined the outcome of this match. this match was more determined by the fact that halep had a clear plan and part of that plan was to doggedly refuse to give naomi any winners so as to eventually wear naomi down mentally. for example, naomi gave up on the final point in each set. in both cases, halep hit fairly short balls that didn't have a lot of pace. those shots should have been returnable, especially for a player like naomi.
i'm not drawing any conclusions about naomi's future prospects based on this one match because naomi is still a rapidly improving player. i certainly don't think that halep is going to come away from this match thinking that she is going to have an easy time in beating naomi in the future, because halep realizes that naomi is an improving player also, as halep has noted in the past.
as i have frequently stated, i definitely see naomi as a future #1 ranked player, but i don't think that she is a top 10 player, yet. if she takes away the lessons that she needs to learn from this match, it would not surprise me if she does well at the french open.
You sure you watch tennis? In this sport usually lower ranked players get motivated and give everything on-court to beat top players not the other way around. And that's the normal behaviour in almost all sports.
@mos radu: there may some question in your mind as to whether i watch tennis, but there is no question in my mind that you *don't* "watch tennis". if you had, you would have realized what happened the last time naomi and halep played, and why halep would have had extra motivation going into this match.
Yeaaa... ummm .... no. See, for unspoken reasons I tend to watch most of halep's games. Thing is I wouldn't bet 1 dollar on her. You just can't tell when she's gonna play really bad. you can guess that she's almost always gonna lose with sharapova or mugurusa as well as she's almost always gonna win with pliskova. Those are mental things. With others it's about the wind, 'period' of the month, time of the day, farts and so on so it can go either way. What triggered me was that you tend to believe that it's not naomi's foul play that ended the tournment for her but the fact that simona somehow surpassed her own talents because she was beaten before. Let me reassure you that even in her worst games, no matter who she's playing with she tries to make the best out of it. Lower rank players, teams, will almost always give their last breath when they play against top ones. It's human nature, not the other way around(take rocky balboa for example or watch australian open halep vs davis and so on). That being said I apologize if you felt offended, it was not my goal. I'm sure you are a tennis fan, bigger fan than I am and I was a bit sarcastic in the opening of the comment. But I was right and it is no shame in you admitting it. Read your own comment having what I stated in perspective. Peace out!
Im pretty sure both players had different but equally powerful reasons to be motivated to win. Paper wait's point is naomi realised halep was on fire and it would take something special to beat her which naturally caused her to tilt.
yeap. you're right. I've no issue with paper's points except that i don't think that simona did anything other than any player does when preparing for the opponent. That is trying to understand the weakness and so on. She had a good day, osaka had a bad day, last time was the other way around, and before that was the other way around again. and so on, it's not like they only met two times. My point is also that between the first 100 players they are capable beating each other it's not like nr 1 is in fact the best. It's very 'moment dependent'.
Yayyy happy she won. I hate when these youngins come in and play gutsy tennis. I need them to show me that their mentally tough and can within conflict throughout a match.

Pliskova was on deuce 5-5 in 3rd set and umpire got a call very wrong, so when Pliskova went to shake the umpire hand, she faked her and then started whacking the side of the umpire chair, I thought she was a robot then she just started unleashing, omg.

Adrian Djatikusumo I am a huge fan of Naomi and I knew she wouldn't have won this match against Simona. I like Simona too. But i like Naomi better. Simona had a clearly obvious determination to get back at Naomi for her previous match, which Simona lost. This one match doesn't describe Naomi's entire career. We'll just have to wait and see how things turn out in the future. Which I believe is gonna be epic for Naomi. Given the chance and support she receives from people who truly believes in her. I DO NOT agree that Naomi is the new Serena. Serena is a legend and has had a career span way above Naomi. But who knows she'll surpass that? We'll just have to watch it I guess.

the only thing that halep has done wrong was to decide to get breast reduction surgery and that was a horrendous, unforgivable decision that was a crime against nature. other than that, i don't see any problem with halep's face, that's just the way that she looks.
