Both Army and Marine Corps vet here. Please be aware that this is NOT a entry level job. What that means is that if you really want this, you will go into the military as an MP. Once there, you will have to prove yourself, then MAYBE get a shot at landing a K9 spot. Remember, though, you will be in competition against people who have been at that unit for a while, so you might never get a spot as a K9 handler. If you have a recruiter, tell you that I'm wrong, then you have them put K9 handler as your MOS in your contract IN WRITING! I promise you that they won't, and will probably try to convice you verbally. I'm not calling all recruiters liars, BUT they have to meet quotas. Make sure you do your due diligence before signing ANYTHING! It's your career. You make the choices. Also, don't let them try to BS you into anything or intimidate you into signing. If you feel that they are being dishonest, then they probably are. If that's the case, shop around and find a recruiter that will be straight with you.
Seems like the most appealing MOS.

I'm old 68 and a civilian but have had shepherds all my life since I was five. These beautiful animals were raised to work. They did a task. The task of standing in front of protecting our troops - thank them and thank God.
Right now my latest GSD is at my feet. I call him my covid dog. Because he came to me December of 2020. I live alone. My family has moved to a different State so I'm all he has. It takes a bit for him to be comfortable around others. But that is the breed. My daughter has always had labs. Her house was broken into in the middle of the day and they just sat there and watched the intruder as he broke the window. That will not happen at my house.
But at the same point for those who do not understand the difference between aggression and protection, you can come into my house if you're invited. If you are not invited it's best you stand on the sidewalk until you are.
A statement like that comes from someone who doesn’t have military or law enforcement in their family. They take their personal freedom for granted. GSDs, Malinois or any other breeds used by police or military love to be active.& protective. It’s in their DNA. Peeps like those would be in a world of sh*t w/o law enforcement or the military. Send them back to their Xboxes.
You see I would love too but the thing is I have my own dog I've trained that I would want to use 😂😭... But then again who wouldn't want a malinois 😍

It is only active the only acception is Connecticut has a national guard team

@@SampsonWrestling the pay depends on rank and time in service. you can be a Dog Handler and get paid the same as a Infantry Man or Human Resources. it all depends on rank and time in service

Infantry and dog handler are two different mos's. You can only have one in the military but when you reenlist you can pick the job you want
i’m in the infantry currently no you can’t sadly but in a ranger regiment you can i’m currently bout to reclass to this mos as soon as my contract is up
Gosh we need as many of these dogs possible ! Give them full benefits the moment they work at health human service like SSI monthly payment , snap , dogs meal on wheel , housing , healthy benefits card , the right to vote 🗳️, electric bill , free internet … when retire SSI to SSA monthly payment n continue all above till death . 12k off Tesla , n many more .. why not ? If migrants n human have it why can’t these type of dogs who protect our country has these type of benefits

@@martindaniels2444 You misunderstood what I said. Dog handlers will still be around in the army, but it’s going back to how it was before where you have to be a 31B first and then get slotted for dog handling training. Probably won’t be for awhile, but in the next upcoming years 31K will no longer be it’s own Military occupational specialty.

Army recruiter came to my home last night to speak with my son.
The recruiter told my son to not go into the dog handler program because it’s small and he wouldn’t get promoted!

He told him that because he wants your son to enlist yesterday and if he wants the 31K spot that means he’s gonna have to wait for an opening. Recruiters don’t like waiting.
He's right about the promotion because what would one want to get promoted to? You get trained to be a handler and they expect you to stay a handler. There's no leadership position in dog handling. It's just you and the dog, going from company to any other company that needs a dog.

This is not true at all, currently a 31K handler and we don’t commit any hostile acts towards our dogs, the environment has changed.
