M45C Quadmount .50 cal "Meat Chopper" In Action

  • Steve Carlesco brought his M45C Quadmount "Meat Chopper" to the Green Mountain Boys machine gun shoot in Vermont in 2017. It chewed up a car with its four .50 cal Browning M2 machine guns firing all at once.
Carlesco's M45C was built in 1944 and according to him, is the only active unit on the road that actually fires in the USA. It's all original except for some newer batteries.
The M45C was developed by the W. L. Maxson Corporation and was designed to shoot down ground attack aircraft during World War II. Four Browning M2 .50 caliber machine guns were mounted on a variety of carriages. Carlesco's is an M51 gun carriage. It was manned by three people, two to feed and one to aim and fire.
Alone, a single Browning M2 machine gun with rate of fire of 450 to 550 rpm was inadequate against aircraft. But four was just right.
The highly mobile M45C was extremely successful against aircraft and acted as a strong deterrent to strafing runs by enemy warplanes. It was also used against ground forces when necessary. As the jet age began, it was much less effective. However, it took on a new role as an anti-infantry weapon in both the Korean and in Vietnam Wars where it was extremely effective.
The M45C was completely electrically driven and powered by rechargeable batteries that were charged by a generator next to the batteries. Standard practice was to fire five minutes on and five off to let the guns cool down. Later, in Korea and Vietman, two guns were fired at a time allowing them to alternate.

"We don't like to run the generator because it's noisy and it smells." But the 4-.50's are quiet and odorless.

I’m guessing that shooting four big machine guns at once is a lot more fun than running a 70yo generator, so that would explain why they tolerate one and not the other.

While I am here I have to mention that I saw this one firing at Knobb Creek Machine Gun Show. It was right beside 3 Mini-guns. What a wonderful day of watching them all shoot. The range guy said: To start this round, a mini-gun is going to fire 400 rounds then everyone start shooting. It took less than 4 seconds to fire his 400 rounds, then 60 machine guns started firing. Good memory. I felt my body vibrating from the sound waves.

The Quad .50 is such a great anti-aircraft weapon. Even though it's not optimal compared to others. It's cheap compared to other systems, far smaller, and far more light weight. Can easily be used for anti-personnel, anti-armor, and anti-aircraft making it a workhorse of a weapon that is still effective today. I wouldn't use it standalone as an anti aircraft gun. But, it can still hit enemy aircraft at altitudes of +5,200/ft.
