Seems like lot of cars for one family! Multiple cars at once? I refuse, as a Chevy guy to put the expected anti-Ford comment here, but my folks only had FOUR family cars while I was growing up: a '62 Biscayne 2-door sedan, a '66 Bel Air wagon, a '69 Kingswood Estate (4-barrel 427 and dual exhaust... that big boy could scoot!), and a '77 9C1 police-pack Impala wagon.
We did not own all those cars at once. That list included the cars that were in our family over the course of about 20 years. When my 4 brothers and I were younger we got transported in the station wagons. When we’re old enough to drive dad would get us an older Ford sedan to drive. Dad had a Ford car for going to work. So that many cars for seven drivers over the course of 20 years does not equal that many cars. We lived in the Midwest on gravel roads and were in a region where salt was spread on the roads in winter, rust was a problem. Also as new drivers my brothers an I were involved in accidents that might total the car, glad we had the full size cars. Thanks for reading about our family history with Ford automobiles.

Oops forgot one: 2001 Chrysler Sebring convertible What a fun car, no I did not have trouble with the 2.7 V6 engine. Only drove it in the summer and when a spare car was needed. Had over 97000 miles when traded off in 2020.
I'm always surprised at how stock so many of the cars are in the junkyard. This car lived its whole life with an AM radio. Even during the stereo craze of the 90s nobody switched it.
In my state of Alabama, a wasp or hornet nest in the trunks of long since parked cars is a guarantee this time of year. When you pop open a trunk you need to be ready to run, and that's not an exaggeration. And under the hoods, in between doors and jambs, behind the gas filler hatch, inside glove compartments and the worst ones... Hidden behind the dashboards. 😳 And speaking of 1970 Ford LTDs and Alabama, when I was a little boy that's what our State Troopers and Birmingham City police mostly drove. 1970ish LTDs I remember the city cops being dark blue metal flake with the States being blue and black, with the single "disco ball" blue light on top. Was 1980 but I remember like yesterday reaching under the hood for the latch on a '68 Mustang that had been sitting and grabbing a flapjack sized live hornet nest. Yikes. Must have gotten stung 25 times, eyes swelled up from stings on the cheeks. Needless to say I always bend over and look before I grab now....
My folks had an LTD. I was 6 when they sold it and bought a Dodge Omni in 1978. I remember the hide away headlights. It was red with a black vinyl top and black interior. I'm sure it had the 351. It would have actually been nice to have the bigger car like that one or a Cornet instead of the Omni because my two sisters and I where stuck in the back seat of the little Dodge for three hours about once a month to go see our Grandma. As we where growing the car was shrinking. The only reason I can think of that my Dad decided to get the Omni was fuel economy. Times were tough back then especially on the farm.
Steve, another Steve here ! So glad you mentioned the 70 1/2 Ford Falcon ! My Father had one & everyone called it a Torino (which technically it was) also he had a 70 Ranch Wagon ! All your videos are great !
I like Ford's idea of the radio on the LEFT side of the wheel! Kept backseat drivers at bay and forced to listen to your heavy metal with risk of broken arm if attempting to change station😁😁

So many styling cues and hanging panels carried over to Aus production LTD and Fairlane's in later 70's Aussie models, ZH Fairlane rear doors for instance but id feel Deja Vue big time sitting in that old LTD :-)
Hi Steve, great video on this 70 L-Titty. Gator McClusky drove a brown 1971 Ford Custom 500 four-door with a bench seat, a four-speed, and a big 429 under the hood 🥰😍. Don't forget Rebel Roy's 71 Mercury Monterey supposedly bending a "pushing rod." There are a few scenes in the movie that show the car as an automatic transmission. These 4dr Fords around here were easily spotted making a “run of likker” because the air shocks would be pumped up tight as a tick. The very next day, that same car would be riding level. A couple of brothers around these parts always used Ford L-Titties to haul liquor in. Roy and Coy both are gone. We had a rookie cop who had started work with the county, and in his 1st year, he goes out and busted old Roy. Everyone knew they ran liquor, even the local deputies knew of it. So they made a big deal of the bust. It made front page news how they had taken illegal whiskey off the streets. Roy had to be in his 80s by then and only gotten probation, and not long after he was back driving another L-Titty with the rear springs "hunkered down." I guess he didn't have time to get those High Jackers installed before the next delivery. Hi Mr mad Mike, Yes, yesterday I was short and sweet in the comment section. You've got some good stories! El Titty, Live To Die (up here in Michigan most died of body cancer). Had a few of those big Fords roll through. LTD sedan was a shocker.
Hi, We all know about movie magic. Yes, the car in question was depicted in the movie as a 4spd with several interior shots of him shifting a Hurst shifter and even the sound track a 4spd was also used in the 1st 15-20mins Then he pulls up to his parents' house, and you clearly see him put it in park from a column shifted AT. The other very notable mistake was when they presented the car to Gator. He spoke of a 429 dual carbs engine, but clearly, it's not a dual carb setup in the picture shown in the movie. There's also shots in the movie of the AT column shift, and also, an AT brake pedal is shown. I am sure I missed some, but I'm only working from memory and hadn't seen the movie in quite some time. Hello from Ireland Had a ‘77 LTD 4 door hardtop when I was in the states in the mid ‘90’s. Bought it out of a police impound auction near Carbondale in Colorado for 180 bucks, 351ci high output. Drove the wheels off it and eventually it was parked at Boston airport on the way home!! Good times:)

Very true! I actually went there and met up with Dale and his dog, and he advised that if I walked on the property to put some spray on there, as there's also tons of ticks. I didn't doubt him, drove up the road to a Dollar General store and bought me a bottle and sprayed it all over me, even on my socks!
I remember in high school around Pittsburgh someone had one of these on a truck chassis with lift kit n stacks. It was called the road boat and it used to go to Steelers tailgates all the time. And they would haul a trailer with all their tailgates supplies.

Our family had a 1970 LTD hardtop in an olive green. we had to get the valve guides bronzed inserted, a common problem for that year. I talked my father into getting some Sears radial tyres on it, a first for him. It was a very smooth and super reliable car after that. We sold it with over 150K miles on it.
I am sick to death of all these gray cars! Silver and charcoal were bad enough, but they came out with that ugly battleship gray a couple of years ago... that has got to be the worst of all! Real colors do seem to be coming back to some extent; I've seen some great candy reds recently. I did my part for the war against those drab gray cars nearly 18 years ago when I bought my first (and last) brand new car: a bright red Chevy Cobalt SS. (Of course, our family car at the time was a silver Malibu and, when that got run over by a Tahoe - long story - my wife replaced it with a charcoal gray Malibu! At least her current car is a deep red Honda Crosstour.)
Gator McClusky had the 71 sedan with 429 and 4 speed . Some good sounds at the start of the White Lightning movie . The 2 73s i had came with the rubber biscuits behind the bumpers , you got a strong rebound bounce when you bumped something
So many of them old Galaxies where driven into the ground, being handed down or sold for next to nothing in the early 80's and driven and rusting away until no longer usable.
My first car was a 1969 LTD 429. 2 door blue and white 💙🤍.. worst radio in history!!!!! My first Drive inn date was a Burt Reynolds double feature 😊 Gator and W.W. and the Dixie Dance King's 🤠👍 who remembers that movie 🤔 great memories 🍻☺️✌️
I took my drivers license in a similar 69 Merc Grand Marquis 4 door with a 429. The 3 point turn and parallel park part of the test was rather interesting.
What a sinister, nasty ride. Just like the LTD they used in a chase scene in the movie 'Colors'. The LTD Hardtop Coupes we got in New Zealand and Australia were killer, too.
I remember when I was growing up in Puerto Rico, a lot of those where used as taxis! I knew an older gentleman who had the one you mentioned with the big motor and the 4 speed manual transmission. Wow just think if he only knew how rare those big monsters where going to be!! Great video Steve!👌😎👍
Yes before the first Arab oil embargo of 1973 "full size cars" were the norm because they were also called family cars. LTDs were comfortable cars and does anyone remember the TV commercials tell us that the ride in an LTD Brougham equivalent, a Mercury Marquis was so smooth that you could cut a diamond in it?
My grandfather had one of the is body style. I was a retired NC sheriff deputy car (or state trooper, I can't remember). I don't know what engine it had, but I remember it would MOVE!
You sir are a far braver man man than I am! As a kid I was fascinated by anything with a motor in or on it. A trip to my grandparent's or great uncle's farms was awesome because they had old cars, trucks and farm machinery out in the woods. I was probably 5 or 6 when I found a hornet or wasp nest in an old truck. Too little to out run them but I ran as fast as I could anyway. Didn't stop me from climbing in and on old stuff, just made the approach a lot slower looking and listening for any signs of life. 🤣
Great video. This LTD reminds me of the LTD in the movie Gator with Burt Reynolds. He drove a similar Ford LTD that actually had a four-speed in it and it looks like it had a 429 in the movie. Not entirely sure about that last part, but I do know that it was a four-speed. Check the movie out sometime. It's actually pretty cool. His LTD was brown and it was a four-door so that would be a really cool. Find the day to find one with a big block 429 four-speed and a four door. If I'm not mistaken, I thinking that same movie how need them was doing a stunt in the movie where the LTD jumped made a jump and landed on a barge in that particular stunt. It didn't go quite right and howl wound up getting injured. Just a nice little trivia there to hear about
I know that movie. I remember when the "local kids" in one scene outside a store watched Gator drive away in a hurry and one says something like this to the other "That's a stock block 426 Hemi". The other replies; "no its not its a 429, I saw the fender emblem". I recall the term "stock block" coming out of one kid's mouth. WHY? I figure some non-automotive Hollywood script supervisor said: "we need some realistic car talk...grab a copy of Car Craft and find some words that sound right. Then feed them to the local kid extras to say in the scene.....3-2-1 and....ACTION". Another quirk about that movie is how certain in-car close up shots do indeed show a hand rowing a 4-speed transmission. But a closer look reveals that footage (B-roll) was taken in a MUSTANG!!! The comment at 4:27 about the Cleveland and Windsor engines reminds me of how many cities around the Great Lakes area are 'automotive' famous besides Detroit. Saginaw and Muncie are known for transmissions. Dayton for GM electrical components. Tonawanda for Chevy engines. Flint, Lansing, and Dearborn for Buick, Olds and Ford. 🤔
@@burthenry7740 Yeah, we used to lived down the street from New Venture Gear. In fact, our house was maybe ten feet from the street? We'd know when the shift changed, a pot-holed pavement and well-used cars make for alotta noise at a stop sign intersection. I'm just not clear on the history of the tranny's name. Didn't think there was any relation to city's name.
I have a 70 Galaxie 500 4 door. It was originally a fire chief car so it's red (I hate red cars) with black interior, 390 2v auto. When I bought it the 390 was roached so I built a mild 460 4v and c6 for it. That was about 10 years ago and I still have a blast driving it today. It's nothing special but it puts a smile on people's face and does mean burnouts
Base motor was a 302 not a 351. Power disk brakes were an option, not standard equipment. Standard was manual drum brake front end. L.T.D stands for Lincoln Type Design, referring to the suspension. I've still got my 68, I'm the 2nd owner, bulletproof car. I made a cold start video for this car on my channel for those interested in hearing 1 run. Thanks again Steve!
Your facts are true for 1969. That year had standard drums and a 302. Starting in 1970, LTDs had standard power disc brakes and a 351, although power steering and automatic were still on the option list. You could still get manual steering and 3-on-the-tree in 1971. Only in 1972 did the LTD get automatic, power steering and power disc brakes standard. The disc brakes were still an option on Galaxie 500 and Custom 500. Only in 1973 would Auto trans, PS and PDB be standard across the board.
Yeah Steve, you gotta watch out for those junk yard hazards like bees and SNAKES! All those trunks with the rusted out floors are a perfect home for a rattler. And another thing: watch out for the poison ivy! In the video the other day, you were standing right next to a big tree that had poison ivy wrapped all around it. A few underhoods and rusted car interiors had it too, I noticed. Remember - "Leaves of three, let it be!"
Dad bought me 1970 LTD 2 door hardtop with 390 2v and hide away head lights. Sold it to my next brother who had it rear ended twice. He sold it to other brother who had it rear ended twice also. Finally junked it out because he couldn't find parts to rebuild it.
Yes it did. In 1979 they sold the LTD which had 1 headlight on each side and the Crown Vic next to it with the duals. Eventually they just dropped the LTD entirely.
The huge deep trunk is thanks to the gas tank being mounted vertically right behind the rear axle. That started in 1965 and went on to the last of the Panther platform Fords in the early 2010's
After moving from the east coast to Texas with a girl I met on vacation in the mid 90s I bought a 1970.5 Falcon from the original owner who was 63 when she bought it new. Only mods I did was have the windows including the vents tinted and but a set of wheels with chrome outer and black centers with fake knock offs. Car got stolen after moving to Austin from the country town we first lived in. I loved that car and got compliments everywhere I went.
I never open a hood, door, or trunk of a long-dormant car without a can of either starting fluid or carb cleaner in one hand. It drops them right out of the air instantly!
I wasn't much in to the big Fords until I saw White Lightning with Burt Reynolds driving that Custom 500, then in high school we had one of the last big LTDs for driver's ed.
No 3 on the tree was available, Steve? Mexico had the 3 on the tree available until the mid '70's. I have seen a 1975 Country Sedan wagon with the 3 on the tree.
Hello @mexicanspec, THANKS for watching and writing. The cars I encounter are 99.9-percent "U.S. specification" with a handful of Canadian variants. That said, when I lived in Los Angeles I used to discover Mexican-market variations on certain U.S. cars. Usually a Metric gauge package was the first tip-off. I do find these "long lost cousin" export / non-U.S. variants extremely interesting. I strongly suggest that you make some TH-cam videos sharing some of these vehicles with U.S. viewers. I've long been a big Ford guy- as in I like the big Fords. My ideal would be a '67 Galaxie 500 fastback, 390-4V, riding on a set of Magnum 500 wheels and redline tires. White exterior, red interior- just a gorgeous combination.
My dad had a triple black 70’ LTD 2 Dr hardtop with the 429 we think it was the Thunderjet , but he got it used from a man who special ordered it and he liked speed- so there is a remote possibility it had the higher performance police package engine. If only we had the VIN. Mom hated it because of the brake pressure it took to keep it still at stop lights. She said it had a lope. It was big, comfortable, and fast.
My aunt and uncle had one of these. It may have been a 1969 model because it had badging on the front fenders, saying 429. I believe in 1970 that was discontinued. But pretty much the same car. 4 door sedan, AM radio on the far left side. It was a Brougham model with the rarely ordered factory 8 track player that was mounted on the transmission hump. Nice car. His was what you would call an executive car. Being a Ford employee meant that when the big shots were done with the cars they used from Ford, employees could buy them at lower prices. The ine shown in the video looks like it has the optional rear window de-fogger. A vent placed on the package tray that blows warm air on the back window.
Hi Steve, nice video! As factory air-conditioning became more popular, the front vent windows were phased out on hardtop cars, because people who would spend the extra money for factory-air would go ahead and order a hardtop. Also, producing a car with out vent windows was cheaper. The factory a/c compressor on the car that you profiled is a York brand a/c compressor, "very popular". On the 1969 and 1970 full-size Ford, the Ford Motor Company located the radio on the far left side of the instrument panel "dash board you might say" along with the radio antenna on the left fender. Only the driver could work the radio, with their left hand. I do not understand why Ford did that. Please reply. Dave...

I didn’t think that was a ford. One of my greatest influences was my grandfather in his Ford 390 LTD 4 barrel . He started Burning out as we pulled out of a shell gas station circa 1972. So unexpected and out of character and all . he said to me after it happened he turned to me and looked at me and said “this babies got some serious power” I have been hooked on cars ever since. I wish he could know the influence that had on me! Ha
My dad bought a 68 Custom, used, in the early 70s. In his never ending quest for has mileage cars, it was a 6 cylinder, automatic car, and must have had like .273 gears. Had a zero to 60 time of about a day😮. We aptly named it "Turtle Tires"😅
I had a beautiful, 1 original owner, 1970 Ford XL, with the Super Rare, 429 N code, Thunder Jet about 10 years ago! I bought it out to the Pure Stock Drag Race in Stanton, Michigan and ran a 14.6 @ 96 mph on the 1/4 mile Track. I couldn’t believe how FAST that car was! 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
I think an interesting video idea is if you ever find a 1969 or 1970 Mustang Grande when Ford tried to offer a luxury Mustang. Our family had one complete with a 351 Windsor engine.
My aging brother-in-law owns a black 1962 Impala SS with red guts that I help him detail every summer before show season! By “help” I mean I run the towels and the chemicals and he provides direction from his folding chair…….😂 Based on my experience with this old Chevy and as someone who is a tad anal-retentive with his vehicles, I will never own a black car…….😱
You could still get a manual 3 speed column shifted transmission in 1970 full size Ford's, including the LTD. I've actually seen a few cars online so equipped and remember seeing them occasionally when I was a kid. The car in your video has the base LTD interior which was mostly similar to that used in the Galaxie 500. Optionally available, was the "Luxury Group" interior that was similar to the standard Country Squire station wagon interior. Top of the line was the Brougham interior, which could be had with standard or split bench front seat.

Nothing fit in that area so there was no reason to remove it. People put the newer stereo under the dash.
Handy like that. No passengers touched it either. 😅.

In my state of Alabama, a wasp or hornet nest in the trunks of long since parked cars is a guarantee this time of year. When you pop open a trunk you need to be ready to run, and that's not an exaggeration. And under the hoods, in between doors and jambs, behind the gas filler hatch, inside glove compartments and the worst ones... Hidden behind the dashboards. 😳
And speaking of 1970 Ford LTDs and Alabama, when I was a little boy that's what our State Troopers and Birmingham City police mostly drove. 1970ish LTDs I remember the city cops being dark blue metal flake with the States being blue and black, with the single "disco ball" blue light on top.

Was 1980 but I remember like yesterday reaching under the hood for the latch on a '68 Mustang that had been sitting and grabbing a flapjack sized live hornet nest. Yikes. Must have gotten stung 25 times, eyes swelled up from stings on the cheeks. Needless to say I always bend over and look before I grab now....

My folks had an LTD. I was 6 when they sold it and bought a Dodge Omni in 1978. I remember the hide away headlights. It was red with a black vinyl top and black interior. I'm sure it had the 351. It would have actually been nice to have the bigger car like that one or a Cornet instead of the Omni because my two sisters and I where stuck in the back seat of the little Dodge for three hours about once a month to go see our Grandma. As we where growing the car was shrinking. The only reason I can think of that my Dad decided to get the Omni was fuel economy. Times were tough back then especially on the farm.

So many styling cues and hanging panels carried over to Aus production LTD and Fairlane's in later 70's Aussie models, ZH Fairlane rear doors for instance but id feel Deja Vue big time sitting in that old LTD :-)
Hi Steve, great video on this 70 L-Titty. Gator McClusky drove a brown 1971 Ford Custom 500 four-door with a bench seat, a four-speed, and a big 429 under the hood 🥰😍. Don't forget Rebel Roy's 71 Mercury Monterey supposedly bending a "pushing rod." There are a few scenes in the movie that show the car as an automatic transmission. These 4dr Fords around here were easily spotted making a “run of likker” because the air shocks would be pumped up tight as a tick. The very next day, that same car would be riding level. A couple of brothers around these parts always used Ford L-Titties to haul liquor in. Roy and Coy both are gone. We had a rookie cop who had started work with the county, and in his 1st year, he goes out and busted old Roy. Everyone knew they ran liquor, even the local deputies knew of it. So they made a big deal of the bust. It made front page news how they had taken illegal whiskey off the streets. Roy had to be in his 80s by then and only gotten probation, and not long after he was back driving another L-Titty with the rear springs "hunkered down." I guess he didn't have time to get those High Jackers installed before the next delivery. Hi Mr mad Mike, Yes, yesterday I was short and sweet in the comment section. Hi, We all know about movie magic. Yes, the car in question was depicted in the movie as a 4spd with several interior shots of him shifting a Hurst shifter and even the sound track a 4spd was also used in the 1st 15-20mins Then he pulls up to his parents' house, and you clearly see him put it in park from a column shifted AT. The other very notable mistake was when they presented the car to Gator. He spoke of a 429 dual carbs engine, but clearly, it's not a dual carb setup in the picture shown in the movie. There's also shots in the movie of the AT column shift, and also, an AT brake pedal is shown. I am sure I missed some, but I'm only working from memory and hadn't seen the movie in quite some time. Had a ‘77 LTD 4 door hardtop when I was in the states in the mid ‘90’s. Bought it out of a police impound auction near Carbondale in Colorado for 180 bucks, 351ci high output. Drove the wheels off it and eventually it was parked at Boston airport on the way home!!

Very true! I actually went there and met up with Dale and his dog, and he advised that if I walked on the property to put some spray on there, as there's also tons of ticks. I didn't doubt him, drove up the road to a Dollar General store and bought me a bottle and sprayed it all over me, even on my socks!
I'll never forget opening a trunk to have a well fed racoon stare me in the face. I about had to change my drawers.

I remember in high school around Pittsburgh someone had one of these on a truck chassis with lift kit n stacks. It was called the road boat and it used to go to Steelers tailgates all the time. And they would haul a trailer with all their tailgates supplies.

Our family had a 1970 LTD hardtop in an olive green. we had to get the valve guides bronzed inserted, a common problem for that year. I talked my father into getting some Sears radial tyres on it, a first for him. It was a very smooth and super reliable car after that. We sold it with over 150K miles on it.

I am sick to death of all these gray cars! Silver and charcoal were bad enough, but they came out with that ugly battleship gray a couple of years ago... that has got to be the worst of all! Real colors do seem to be coming back to some extent; I've seen some great candy reds recently. I did my part for the war against those drab gray cars nearly 18 years ago when I bought my first (and last) brand new car: a bright red Chevy Cobalt SS. (Of course, our family car at the time was a silver Malibu and, when that got run over by a Tahoe - long story - my wife replaced it with a charcoal gray Malibu! At least her current car is a deep red Honda Crosstour.)

Gator McClusky had the 71 sedan with 429 and 4 speed . Some good sounds at the start of the White Lightning movie . The 2 73s i had came with the rubber biscuits behind the bumpers , you got a strong rebound bounce when you bumped something

So many of them old Galaxies where driven into the ground, being handed down or sold for next to nothing in the early 80's and driven and rusting away until no longer usable.

I took my drivers license in a similar 69 Merc Grand Marquis 4 door with a 429. The 3 point turn and parallel park part of the test was rather interesting.
What a sinister, nasty ride. Just like the LTD they used in a chase scene in the movie 'Colors'. The LTD Hardtop Coupes we got in New Zealand and Australia were killer, too.
I remember when I was growing up in Puerto Rico, a lot of those where used as taxis! I knew an older gentleman who had the one you mentioned with the big motor and the 4 speed manual transmission. Wow just think if he only knew how rare those big monsters where going to be!! Great video Steve!👌😎👍

Yes before the first Arab oil embargo of 1973 "full size cars" were the norm because they were also called family cars. LTDs were comfortable cars and does anyone remember the TV commercials tell us that the ride in an LTD Brougham equivalent, a Mercury Marquis was so smooth that you could cut a diamond in it?

My grandfather had one of the is body style. I was a retired NC sheriff deputy car (or state trooper, I can't remember). I don't know what engine it had, but I remember it would MOVE!
You sir are a far braver man man than I am! As a kid I was fascinated by anything with a motor in or on it. A trip to my grandparent's or great uncle's farms was awesome because they had old cars, trucks and farm machinery out in the woods. I was probably 5 or 6 when I found a hornet or wasp nest in an old truck. Too little to out run them but I ran as fast as I could anyway. Didn't stop me from climbing in and on old stuff, just made the approach a lot slower looking and listening for any signs of life. 🤣
Great video. This LTD reminds me of the LTD in the movie Gator with Burt Reynolds. He drove a similar Ford LTD that actually had a four-speed in it and it looks like it had a 429 in the movie. Not entirely sure about that last part, but I do know that it was a four-speed. Check the movie out sometime. It's actually pretty cool. His LTD was brown and it was a four-door so that would be a really cool. Find the day to find one with a big block 429 four-speed and a four door. If I'm not mistaken, I thinking that same movie how need them was doing a stunt in the movie where the LTD jumped made a jump and landed on a barge in that particular stunt. It didn't go quite right and howl wound up getting injured. Just a nice little trivia there to hear about

I know that movie. I remember when the "local kids" in one scene outside a store watched Gator drive away in a hurry and one says something like this to the other "That's a stock block 426 Hemi". The other replies; "no its not its a 429, I saw the fender emblem". I recall the term "stock block" coming out of one kid's mouth. WHY? I figure some non-automotive Hollywood script supervisor said: "we need some realistic car talk...grab a copy of Car Craft and find some words that sound right. Then feed them to the local kid extras to say in the scene.....3-2-1 and....ACTION". Another quirk about that movie is how certain in-car close up shots do indeed show a hand rowing a 4-speed transmission. But a closer look reveals that footage (B-roll) was taken in a MUSTANG!!! The comment at 4:27 about the Cleveland and Windsor engines reminds me of how many cities around the Great Lakes area are 'automotive' famous besides Detroit. Saginaw and Muncie are known for transmissions. Dayton for GM electrical components. Tonawanda for Chevy engines. Flint, Lansing, and Dearborn for Buick, Olds and Ford. 🤔

We'd know when the shift changed, a pot-holed pavement and well-used cars make for alotta noise at a stop sign intersection. I'm just not clear on the history of the tranny's name. Didn't think there was any relation to city's name.
I have a 70 Galaxie 500 4 door. It was originally a fire chief car so it's red (I hate red cars) with black interior, 390 2v auto. When I bought it the 390 was roached so I built a mild 460 4v and c6 for it. That was about 10 years ago and I still have a blast driving it today. It's nothing special but it puts a smile on people's face and does mean burnouts

Base motor was a 302 not a 351. Power disk brakes were an option, not standard equipment. Standard was manual drum brake front end. L.T.D stands for Lincoln Type Design, referring to the suspension. I've still got my 68, I'm the 2nd owner, bulletproof car. I made a cold start video for this car on my channel for those interested in hearing 1 run. Thanks again Steve!
Correct the 302 was a Windsor and the 351 always a Cleveland in the second generation.
Your facts are true for 1969. That year had standard drums and a 302. Starting in 1970, LTDs had standard power disc brakes and a 351, although power steering and automatic were still on the option list. You could still get manual steering and 3-on-the-tree in 1971. Only in 1972 did the LTD
get automatic, power steering and power disc brakes standard. The disc brakes were still an option on Galaxie 500 and Custom 500. Only in 1973 would Auto trans, PS and PDB be standard across the board.
When I was a child my uncle said LTD was Load of Tin from Detroit.

And another thing: watch out for the poison ivy! In the video the other day, you were standing right next to a big tree that had poison ivy wrapped all around it. A few underhoods and rusted car interiors had it too, I noticed. Remember - "Leaves of three, let it be!"

Dad bought me 1970 LTD 2 door hardtop with 390 2v and hide away head lights. Sold it to my next brother who had it rear ended twice. He sold it to other brother who had it rear ended twice also. Finally junked it out because he couldn't find parts to rebuild it.

Yes it did. In 1979 they sold the LTD which had 1 headlight on each side and the Crown Vic next to it with the duals. Eventually they just dropped the LTD entirely.
The huge deep trunk is thanks to the gas tank being mounted vertically right behind the rear axle. That started in 1965 and went on to the last of the Panther platform Fords in the early 2010's
After moving from the east coast to Texas with a girl I met on vacation in the mid 90s I bought a 1970.5 Falcon from the original owner who was 63 when she bought it new. Only mods I did was have the windows including the vents tinted and but a set of wheels with chrome outer and black centers with fake knock offs. Car got stolen after moving to Austin from the country town we first lived in. I loved that car and got compliments everywhere I went.
Abc pillar sedan with auto box is the pick of all the LTD configurations in my opinion.

I wasn't much in to the big Fords until I saw White Lightning with Burt Reynolds driving that Custom 500, then in high school we had one of the last big LTDs for driver's ed.
In the movie Gator with Burt Reynolds he had a green 4 door 4 speed. That would be a good one to show.

No 3 on the tree was available, Steve? Mexico had the 3 on the tree available until the mid '70's. I have seen a 1975 Country Sedan wagon with the 3 on the tree.
Hello @mexicanspec, THANKS for watching and writing. The cars I encounter are 99.9-percent "U.S. specification" with a handful of Canadian variants. That said, when I lived in Los Angeles I used to discover Mexican-market variations on certain U.S. cars. Usually a Metric gauge package was the first tip-off. I do find these "long lost cousin" export / non-U.S. variants extremely interesting. I strongly suggest that you make some TH-cam videos sharing some of these vehicles with U.S. viewers. I've long been a big Ford guy- as in I like the big Fords. My ideal would be a '67 Galaxie 500 fastback, 390-4V, riding on a set of Magnum 500 wheels and redline tires. White exterior, red interior- just a gorgeous combination.

My dad had a triple black 70’ LTD 2 Dr hardtop with the 429 we think it was the Thunderjet , but he got it used from a man who special ordered it and he liked speed- so there is a remote possibility it had the higher performance police package engine. If only we had the VIN.
Mom hated it because of the brake pressure it took to keep it still at stop lights. She said it had a lope. It was big, comfortable, and fast.

My aunt and uncle had one of these. It may have been a 1969 model because it had badging on the front fenders, saying 429. I believe in 1970 that was discontinued. But pretty much the same car. 4 door sedan, AM radio on the far left side. It was a Brougham model with the rarely ordered factory 8 track player that was mounted on the transmission hump. Nice car. His was what you would call an executive car. Being a Ford employee meant that when the big shots were done with the cars they used from Ford, employees could buy them at lower prices. The ine shown in the video looks like it has the optional rear window de-fogger. A vent placed on the package tray that blows warm air on the back window.
You would be amazed how many kids you could pack in that trunk before entering the drive-in ... Lol..

Hi Steve, nice video! As factory air-conditioning became more popular, the front vent windows were phased out on hardtop cars, because people who would spend the extra money for factory-air would go ahead and order a hardtop. Also, producing a car with out vent windows was cheaper. The factory a/c compressor on the car that you profiled is a York brand a/c compressor, "very popular". On the 1969 and 1970 full-size Ford, the Ford Motor Company located the radio on the far left side of the instrument panel "dash board you might say" along with the radio antenna on the left fender. Only the driver could work the radio, with their left hand. I do not understand why Ford did that. Please reply. Dave...

He started Burning out as we pulled out of a shell gas station circa 1972.

My dad bought a 68 Custom, used, in the early 70s. In his never ending quest for has mileage cars, it was a 6 cylinder, automatic car, and must have had like .273 gears. Had a zero to 60 time of about a day😮. We aptly named it "Turtle Tires"😅
I had a beautiful, 1 original owner, 1970 Ford XL, with the Super Rare, 429 N code, Thunder Jet about 10 years ago! I bought it out to the Pure Stock Drag Race in Stanton, Michigan and ran a 14.6 @ 96 mph on the 1/4 mile Track. I couldn’t believe how FAST that car was! 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
I think an interesting video idea is if you ever find a 1969 or 1970 Mustang Grande when Ford tried to offer a luxury Mustang. Our family had one complete with a 351 Windsor engine.

You could still get a manual 3 speed column shifted transmission in 1970 full size Ford's, including the LTD. I've actually seen a few cars online so equipped and remember seeing them occasionally when I was a kid. The car in your video has the base LTD interior which was mostly similar to that used in the Galaxie 500. Optionally available, was the "Luxury Group" interior that was similar to the standard Country Squire station wagon interior. Top of the line was the Brougham interior, which could be had with standard or split bench front seat.
